Sporer is a MUST SEE if you are in Salzburg. I first learned of it in a Rick Steve's episode about the city. When I was in Salzburg in late May, my fiancé and I knew that we had to stop by for a schnapps tasting. This is one of the oldest family run businesses in Salzburg I believe and it was AWESOME! Everyone who worked there was so friendly and let us taste multiple of their favorite flavors before we purchased a bottle. What can I say? This place is awesome!! My fiancé and I stopped here to do some schnapps tasting during our stay in Salzburg. Sporer has been making their own liquors for over 100 years. We popped in the adorable shop about an hour before closing and were warmly greeted by the woman behind the counter. We told her we were interested in tasting some schnapps and she began pouring us a variety of deliciousness. We tried the elderflower (my favorite), apricot, pear, sour cherry, and zirben (his favorite). The proprietor was so sweet, she even gave us some white wine to sample. Everything was fantastic! What a cute little place! We saw Sporer on an old episode of Rick Steeves a couple of months back and for some reason it stick in our heads and we knew we had to come here. And boy am I glad we did! We came in at 10:30 am on a weekday and there were already some locals drinking wine and schnapps! Everyone was laughing and cheery, it made for a really fun visit. The woman behind the bar was very welcoming and took her time describing the differences between all the brandies (most strong), schnapps (sweet & strong), and liqueurs (most sweet). We each did the tasting menu, which was a selection of any 3 items (brandy, schnapps, or liqueur) for €6 I believe. She poured all our samples and we took them into the back room to sip on. And not surprisingly, there were other locals already drinking back there too. Fun! On our way out, we purchased some punch, which you are supposed to mix with other stuff and drink warm. The woman at the bar gave us the recipe cards as well as some info cards and post cards. She was so sweet! Definitely recommended on your trip to Salzburg if you like delicious liquor. Who doesn't like a shop that has brewing their own alcohols for over 100 years? The shop, clearly a family owned and run business, was bustling when we arrived on a chill weekday afternoon in February. The narrow shop has a bar that also serves as a sales counter and tasting area. After a brief inquiry, the shop keeper was happy to explain (in English, fortunately) everything we wanted to know about their brews--complete with the opportunity to taste them. Drinks by the glass were available for purchase, as were bottles of liquor. Try the "original" punch. It's served warm and may remind you slightly of a mulled wine, though much thinner in appearance and with an orange punch like flavor. A glass or two of this will certainly give you a warm buzz on a cold day! In any event, this shop would be a must-visit on my list of Salzburg recommendations. You won't be disappointed. read more

Located in the historic centre in Saltzburg, It is a busy shop, with people happily imbibing Sporer's specialty Schnapps and liqueurs, which they make themselves. They, also, carry a generous selection of wine and other stuff. But let's face it, you are here for their self-brewed stuff. 1 to 2 Euro for a sample, which are really good. Because I was there in November, they already had their season grogg and Christmas Punch out of for sampling, which was simply wonderful. Staff is pretty friendly, despite how crazy crowded it is around the bar. But everyone, staff included, is having a great time. Their home brews are quite hefty for a lightweight like me; but they are definitely worth checking out and sampling - if they have the holiday punch - try it, same with the Elderflower and Pear Williams. Buying is pretty straight forward - you just tell them which one you want one and the size - most of them them come in 3 different sizes, we got two medium elderflower liqueurs with 1 large bottle of the Christmas punch (which you would need to dilute 4 parts hot water to 1 part of the punch). The sad thing is that I couldn't pack more of it to bring back; but Sporer is worth checking out for a drink. The staff speak English, so there isn't as much as a problem with language; if that is a concern. read more

Like the previous reviewer (in English), I heard about this shop from the Rick Steves travel show and guidebook, so I made sure to see it when my friend and I were visiting Salzburg for the day. It was as charming as I had hoped it would be, although it was pretty packed for a Tuesday afternoon just after the end of high tourist season, so we didn't quite have the undivided attention of the shopkeepers. It sounded like the other patrons were locals (or at least visiting from nearby German-speaking areas) and they were mostly engaged with them. I mentioned that I had seen the shop on tv, but I don't think it quite registered. They were friendly enough, but I suppose I was hoping for an, "Ah! A guest of Rick Steves! Let the brandy flow!" At any rate, we tried the cherry schnapps and the apricot brandy, and they were both so smooth and delicious. I was about to order a third, but my friend was the reasonable one and said perhaps we shouldn't, and as soon as he did, my head started feeling like a balloon filled with helium when the effect of the alcohol hit. Deeeeee-lightful! If ever I have the opportunity to go to Salzburg again, I would definitely re-visit Sporer and try to strike up a conversation and perhaps go for that third shot after all. ;-) read more

Loved this place. Fun and the staff was very helpful. We were looking for more of a sweeter schnapps and the gentleman helping us suggested the Elderflower which I bought a bottle of. I won't lie: I love booze. I read about Sporer and their handcrafted spirits in a Rick Steves guidebook, so when my girlfriend and I visited Salzburg we made sure to stop by. The quaint old shop is very welcoming. As soon as we stepped inside we were greeted by the proprietors. They were very excited to show off their house specialties and offer suggestions about different spirits we might want to try. One of our favorites was the Hollerbluten, which is a delicious elderflower liqueur. They had a wonderful William (the traditional pear brandy) and my favorite was their herbal Hausmischung, which reminded me of an Italian amaro. Definitely stop by for a few tastes and bring home a memorable souvenir! read more
