I am a fishing guide for largemouth bass and know what it takes to gain repeat customers in the charter/guide business. You have to be a someone who actually cares about their customers experience. I met Capt. Clayton Mock with Spired Charters while eating at Parrot Eyes on vacation last year on South Padre Island. He was hanging some nice trout and redfish from the days trip for a customer photo, and fortunately had an opening to take my girlfriend and I fishing before we left the island. We met about sunrise, walked directly from the dock to the boat and were on our way towards the fishing grounds! Clayton explained to us his history fishing the bay which was very reassuring since his uncle and father are two of the most well known guides on the South Padre Island. I had never fished the Laguna Madre Bay and was amazed at how shallow his boat would run and how clear the water was in some areas. You could even sometimes watch the trout and redfish bite your lure which was well beyond amazing! Make sure to bring your polarized sunglasses and hat! We stopped on what he said was a small high spot that has been holding trout and started to drift with the wind, using the wind at our backs to launch the bait toward the front 1/2 of the boat, then engage the reel, wind in slack line and pop the rod tip while reeling which was very simple, even for an angler with little or no fishing experience. It wasn't 10 min and we were hooked up with the first of our total 12 trout scattered throughout the day! It was unreal how shallow of water the trout would get in, and that anyone could know where to and where not to run a boat on those flats without getting stuck. Towards the 2nd half of the trip after catching most of our trout, we had calmer conditions and sunny skies so Capt. Clayton Mock decided we should adjust our tactics and sight fish for a big school of redfish that was in a particular area the day I first met him. Within about 30 minutes, he pointed out a small wake on the surface and saw some baitfish jump so we headed that way. Clayton told us to get ready and he wasn't kidding. 60 seconds later we were casting at a HUGE school of 5-10 lb redfish nearly right next to the boat. There had to be at least 40 or more solid sized reds in this school, and in only 12 inches of water. Needless to say, we had three hookups at once and drags were screaming! We only landed two of the three redfish in the chaos but had a blast doing it. Combined with the trout action scattered throughout of our trip, I was convinced I had found a new favorite fishing Texas fishing getaway and South Padre Island Bay Fishing Charter Captain. After fishing, Capt. Clayton had our fish cleaned at the dock, bagged to be frozen, and we even some even freshly cooked right at Parrot Eyes for lunch, which is a very short walk from the boat slips. We had such a great trip, used quality gear, and had the company of a very funny, hard working, and personable guide who's focus was on us and our success on the water. I highly recommend Capt. Let me start this review out by saying "I don't fish. Ever." A couple of buddies and I went to SPI for a guys weekend and Spired Charters was recommended to us. All my buddies have been fishing 100s of times. Captain Clayton Mock was great. He took care of everything for us from. It was nice not to have to worry about bringing any rods or bait with us. Although the other guys knew what they were doing, Clayton went over everything I needed to do. When we got out on the water, he immediately went to a hot spot and we didn't waste any time. He told me where to fish, how fast to reel in and it worked. After a couple of hours, we headed back in with a pretty good load. Clayton then took all of our fish, cleaned them and bagged them for us right there on the dock. Let's just say that we had fish for the next week! Really enjoyed the trip out with Captain Clayton Mock. Pretty cool dude and didn't make me feel like a rookie out there. I would highly recommend this guy. read more

I've fished with Clayton 3x now over the last three years. His equipment is top of the line, spacious Dargel Skout fitting 4 large adults easily. Clayton will bust his hump to find you fish and is very knowledgeable of the Laguna Madre. (Bay side not deep sea) Clayton's Shallow-Bottom boat will get you in places some folks can't go. Sea-sickness concerns? You're in 2-4' of water 99% of the time!!! And can often see the bottom!! Unlike some guides, Clayton isn't high pressure. If you want to fish hard, he'll fish hard. If you want to fish relaxed, that works too. His boat-side manner is very adapting to YOUR style of fishing. First-timers absolutly welcome. Our Captain for the day was Clayton and he has over 30 yrs of fishing experience on these waters, plus, he knows all the great spots and has the best collection of equipment we've ever seen. "Best day fishing ever!" according to all 3 of my kids. I have to agree. Seeing all three of them catch their limit of reds and my daughter to add on an oversize 33" monster made for my best day ever fishing. Capt. Clayton Mock is a fantastic guide and all around nice guy. His boat was well equipped and spacious enough for us all. He knows the bay, where the fish are, and what they have an appetite for. A few months back while we were getting hammered with wave after wave of snow and ice in the DFW area, I took a couple of clients from work on a short trip to Padre. Luckily, I was able to book a last minute trip with Captain Clayton Mock. Unfortunately, the weather decided to travel along with us. My husband and went on a trip last year with Captain Clayton Mock and we had a blast! He was able to find where the Red fish and Trout were hiding.
