    Spengler Burger and fries

Food and service was great! It's an old time building that certainly has kept that nostalgic feel. Even with music playing and the place being pretty busy it wasn't too loud. Hawaiian grilled cheese was outside the box for me but it was good. Spengler burger was good also and the fries stole the show!

On paper, Spengler's was a restaurant I should have absolutely loved. It is a long-running, historic establishment located in an equally historic building filled with lots of local character. Additionally as a mom-and-pop restaurant, it positively exuded the 'small town charm' vibe that I typically adore. However both times I have had lunch at Spengler's, the generally clueless wait staff have killed the entire experience for me. The first time I went to Spengler's I had the lunch special chicken breast sandwich, with a side of macaroni and cheese, a cup of the New England clam chowder, and a Pepsi. When I ordered the sandwich, I asked what came on it, and my waiter had to go ask someone in the kitchen. Likewise when I ordered the cup of soup, I asked a question about it, and he had to go back to the kitchen to ask them. Later, I wanted to use a coupon for a free slice of pie, and you guessed it, he had to go ask the kitchen. The food itself was good in an average-sort of way, and the portions were also averagely good, but it really irritated me that I had to ask every time for refills on my soda, and then it took forever to get them. This meal cost $13.96 before tax and tip, but after coupon, which made it about average in value. My second lunch at Spengler's was with a different, but equally clueless server. This waitress also had to run and ask someone else when I asked questions about the Hawaiian grilled cheese. Same thing when I asked how to connect to their new wifi. Exactly like my first trip there, I had to ask for drink refills, and each one was a long time coming. The Hawaiian grilled cheese sandwich itself was pretty good, if pricy. PROS: I loved the historic character of the restaurant; the food was pretty average on balance, as were both the portion sizes and prices. CONS: Wait staff. Full stop. Engaging, friendly, knowledgeable wait staff can make or break a dining experience, and both of my trips to Spengler's were turned from a decidedly average meal into a just OK one by the complete cluelessness of the service. Overall I rate Spengler's as being OK, and might or might not come back.

The home it chips with cheese were amazing. The top shelf margaritas were amazing. The fried egg , bacon and Swiss on my all American burger was amazing. Our waitress, Corey, was amazing. The cons were an overcooked burger and , it seemed , slower than expected service. Corey's shining personality made up for that. All in all a pleasant experience

with the passage of time and so much else a little stability goes a long way. no, this is not the same as it ever was but it really hasn't changed much in the almost fifty years I've been in and out of here. rest rooms still include an adventure down the stairs, big old mirrored bar in back, and somewhere in between you can get two snappy hotdogs on rye breads plus horseradish and yellow mustard, a cup of (bean) soup and a soda... anything beyond that is beyond me except maybe a slice of pie. I come to town to visit family and hit the big reset button reminiscing about childhood summers out to the farm going out by way of M1, and decompressing from city life while tenting out in my cousin's side-yard on Wayne Park Drive (neither of which exist any longer) through it all Spengler's is still Spengler's, warts and all, and I'm a little less worse for the travels.

Just stumbled across this place while visiting the appliance store next door. Wasn't hungry, but I wish I was. Their breakfast menu looks great, but this was mid afternoon, so I just had an IPA. Everyone was friendly and the place was reasonably crowded. Need to come back and try the food to finish this review.

Everything about the place is great All the food is delish and the people that work there are the best. Trust me you will enjoy everything.

We found this place just driving through. Delicious and healthy salads. A very berry one and a Tex-Mex one. Highly recommended.

I was impressed with the Grille as it relates to the lively atmosphere, great music, their attentive customer service aa well as the overall friendliness and warmth I have felt from the clientele, the owner and the staff. I have since returned several times to socialize, eat, have a Pepsi at the bar and talk to the other customers. But this is a special note about the quality of the food. It's absolutely (and consistently) delicious and delivered in generous proportions. It deserves the title "true home cooking" like my mom, who would be 90 years old, rest her soul, used to make. I'm quite confident even she would rate the food 5 stars +! I've also had the pleasure of inviting my family members there to eat with me and sharing takeout at home with my dad...and they have enjoyed it all commented the same. Hats off to the owner and the staff for consistently delivering fantastic food with a smile and at great prices!

This old school Greek Diner in Defiance is a worthwhile stop for a very good meal. Located in an…read moreeast side commercial area in a standalone building on the corner of a strip plaza, it's not difficult to find. The exterior looks nice enough and the spacious interior is comfortable and pleasant though not elaborate. We were seated right away and our server attended to us quickly. She did a very good job during our entire visit as she was efficient and attentive but not intrusive. We had our 3-year-old granddaughter with us and they were able to accommodate her with no problem, which was greatly appreciated. The menu offered plenty of options. They seemed at the core to be a Greek Diner with several characteristic offerings you'd expect from such a place. But they also featured plenty of American Midwest-style comfort food as well. My wife tried the Beef and Noodles special that took us back to the type of thing we ate as kids. She ordered that in part because it was something our granddaughter would eat, but she also enjoyed it as well given her proclivities toward such dishes. I opted for the Greek portion of their menu with a Famous Gyro Salad. It was also a very solid choice with good Gyro meat and fresh vegetables accompanied by equally fresh pita. It was all very good. I'll also note that the coffee was decent, which I can't always say for these types of diners. The prices were very reasonable. Overall with food, drinks, tax and tip, we were able to stay at about $14 - $15 per adult. This is not bad at all for dinner by today's standards and I was quite happy with the value. We would not hesitate to try this place again should the opportunity arise.

Unfortunately they were closed on Sunday so I had to call into my bank and cancel my card. While reviewing the transactions, I realized the amount they had authorized to my card was $10 more than our bill+tip. I used to be a server and worked at a bank so I know how authorizations work so I patiently waited until it cleared. My worst fears were confirmed! Not only did she not return my debit card after payment, apparently she was upset with her 12% tip and added a 1 to my tip to make it +$10! I called pretty upset on Monday afternoon and talked to a manager named Collin who seemed to not care about the issue. No apologies, only to promise to talk to the owner to see if they could do something for me since I lived out of state. I waited until Friday to call them back and was told by the hostess that Natalie would be calling me back later as she was on a call. She did call back about 1 1/2 hours later and said she had already refunded my card for the $10 and that she had looked at the receipt and it appeared I had issues writing with the pen so she could see how the server (Caitlyn) could have thought the tip was $16. 25! I let her know I had no issues with the pen and anything other than my 6.25 on the receipt was added by her server. I told her I was worried for all of the other tables where she had given bad service to and she had done the same thing. She said the server already gave the store back the $10 and apologized for the confusion. Sorry, there was no confusion here! I do truly appreciate Natalie with apologizing for the issue and refunding the money but I would never go to this place and if you do, I would make sure your server wasn't named Natalie. I changed my rating from a 4 to a 1 due to this fiasco. This one was hard to rate. Wish Yelp let me do somewhere around 3.5-3.8. What was good? We walked in and only had to wait about 10 minutes on a Saturday night the weekend of Mother's Day. Our server started off really bad. Didn't introduce herself and she started talking when we weren't even looking at her not realizing she had made it to the table. Her service didn't get much better from there. No mention of the specials. No offer of adult beverages. Bad. Just... What do you want to drink? I used to be a server so I know what they are told to do. We started off with cheese curds and they were pretty good. A little burnt tasting which it felt like was due to older oil that they were fried in. Other than that, they were pretty good. My wife got the Balsamic Chicken Breasts and she absolutely loved hers! She took half of it home so it felt like a pretty good value. I got the Sully Burger and had high hopes. It was good, don't get me wrong. But was it amazing? Nah. The burger was completely overdone and dry. Also didn't love the fried potatoes on it as much as I thought I would. Unfortunately, I was most excited about the horseradish sauce on the burger and it was non-existent. But... All this being said, it was a good burger. Not great. The ambiance of the place was pretty cool and we did really enjoy ourself. So.. I rated it on here at a 4 but probably not quite that good considering the horrible service. She also took forever to come check on us and bring us our check. Probably 20 minutes once we were done (and 20 min after we told her we were done!)
