A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME ! My daughter told me that after 1…read moreweek she did almost have no classes for conversation, her primary goal for coming to FLS. She essentially did literature,... She asked the teacher about this but he said it's not possible to have more conversation lessons ?? Before subscribing we specifically insisted on a program with ONLY converstation because she has enough theory/grammar/vocabulary in her classes here in her own country. What she really needs and lacks is conversation, even simple things. She wants to become more fluid in her dialogue. VACATION ENGLISH PROGRAM is sold as : a program that places an exceptional emphasis on speaking promising students will practice speaking skills frequently in class. (see website) So it seemed perfect for us but it was not ! I contacted the Operations Manager/Center Director at Chestnut hill but nothing was done to make improvements or changes. If you are looking for conversation skills, don't go to FLS !

let me provide some context before you read this review. First, I am an absolute beginner to…read morefrench, so, if you have multiple years of french instruction or lived in France for a period of time you should be OK. The school uses a European system for teaching the language that is just not designed for English speakers. It is virtually impossible to learn the language with this system unless you have years of french training. From the beginning, It is a french immersion so you spend a lot of time on google translate trying to figure out the basic instructions for any homework. The lessons don't really build on each other and seem impractical and of course, are all in french. I'm not sure a beginner needs to learn about purchasing used clothes. I would prefer if you teach me how to order a cup of coffee which just didn't exist. And they are not easy so the assignments become discouraging. Some of the instructors are good, and some are downright dreadful - completely disorganized. The last instructor for me was about as bad as it gets and most importantly, arrogant. What stands out as a huge weakness is the class placement. I was in a 104 level and we had an individual with 7 years french training. And when the instructor would have in-class activities (which I hated and saw it as a way a lazy instructor could chew up time doing nothing but checking their phone) the experienced french students purposely avoided you and were quite frankly rude. In my class, every individual had at least several years of high school french. Some had college level french and were in beginners classes. Not a good situation. One individual sitting next to me went through 5 classes (101 - 105) then repeated the sequence again and dropped at the 104 level out of a realization that they would never be able to hold a french conversation. If you look at the class offerings, you will notice that only one section is provided at the upper levels. By that point, all but the native speakers have quit. Again, if you have french training, you will be OK. If you don't, know when it is time to quit.

This is an incredible place to learn French with talented, supportive and native French speakers. I…read morehave studied there for five years and have cultivated friendships with such a diverse group of students and staff!
