Along with its neighbors, it offers an extensive outdoor dining area. The indoor facility is also nice having a lovely nostalgic feel with additional seating upstairs as well. My server did a rather good job during my visit. Using English was not a problem at all. The highlight of my meal was a terrific shrimp and tomato salad that was fresh and tasty. The shrimp were the small local variety which I find to be particularly enjoyable. The meal was accompanied by tasty frites, as would be expected in Belgium. I finished with a very nice coffee that topped things off in a very satisfying manner. The prices were not bad considering the overall dining experience. In general, It was an enjoyable time and a reasonably good meal. I am confident in recommending this restaurant as a good choice for good quality dining with a local flair.

Menu is typical cafe fare with a wide enough selection to satisfy most eaters. I tried the local cheese appetizer, which would have been plenty for 3 or 4 people, and had the Scampi Diabolique with a local abbey beer (Tongerlo) which was recommended by a local; I am happy to say that I wasn't steered wrong, the beer was outstanding and the shrimp was much better than typical cafe meals. p.s. I recommend you read the menus displayed outside before making your choice. The beau reallllly wanted to go to this place, so I gave in. I had the Kriek Max beer on draught, which was super refreshing. For dinner, we shared the Flemish stew, which was plenty of food for both of us to share. The dish came with a bowl of salad topped with a creamy dressing, and a side of fries. The fries were ordinary, and not seasoned, because it's meant to be smothered into the stew. The stew was classic dark, loaded with beef and slow-cooked mushrooms and carrots. The flavor was good, but not spectacular. It seemed like a good hearty stew to me, and went well with my juicy, tart beer. If I was to return to De Trompet, I would try a different dish... possibly one of their omelets.

I decided to go with the Flemish stew and a glass of house wine. I was not disappointed at all. The stew had a wonder broth - very hearty with a hint of mushroom earthiness. The stew itself had plenty of beef in it as well as veggies. I originally was going to split a bottle of wine with a colleague, but they were out of that particular bordeaux so we both went with the house wine. The wine went well with the stew and it was good enough to have two glasses! Had I not been so full, I'm sure a third would have been in order. All in all I was very pleased and if I ever go back, I'm sure they will get my business again.

Thank goodness it was close to the awesome B&B I stayed at (shout-out to Room's B&B!). Nothing makes you work up an appetite like pedaling 40 km around the Ypres Salient. Especially when you haven't ridden a bike since you were a kid and you are currently a chubby American tourist. I wisely rented a bike from that strange bikingbox place that has absolutely no signage. It's a convenience store right on the same road as the Menen Gate and my favorite store in all of Belgium: Shop & Go! This yummy food cost only about 10 Euros. And it was delicious! The friendly lady who took my order recommended that I get the fries with mayo, because 'when in Rome...' I was pretty grossed-out by the mayo-dipped fries, but the fries alone were amazing. They were light and golden-crispy. Perfect! My burger had a bunch of toppings like cheese and bacon and such. I have never had a tastier burger. And the beer! I was so tired from biking, I went for the huge size. Thank goodness it was just a short walk back to my B&B. Great meal, great trip! I loved Ieper so much! I would go back in a hearbeat!

Let it be known that this is the best burger place I have found in Europe thus far. A variety of regular burgers but also several variation. I had the sweet chicken and husband had the Big Giant. Great little "mill house" out in Vleteren sandwiched in between two world-class breweries:…read moreSint-Sixtus Abdij van Westvleteren to the West (Westvleteren) and De Struise Brouwers Het Oud Schooltje to the East (Oostvleteren) Well technically, De Struise Brouwers is right across the street from this place, but who cares about little details like that. I honestly don't understand why this place isn't a bigger deal. By the looks of the interior and after talking to some people that have frequented this place for decades, it's been family own and run as part of the neighborhood since time immemorial, and the food and service here reflects that very well. You'll find all sorts of crowds here: tourists that somehow stumbled in here because it's probably one of the two or three overtly recognizable restaurants in the vicinity; beer fanatics who are making their lunch stop during some variation of their West Flanders Beer Tour because you can literally park your car in the lot here and walk over to De Struise; or even locals, like Urbain Coutteau and Carlo Grootaert of De Struise Brouwers, who come here during the weekdays after a long day of brewing and work. The atmosphere is accommodating enough to host all types of people described above, and the food is quite hospitable as well; the menu has a grocery list of Flemish delicacies and local (Vleteren) cuisine, alongside some of the more vanilla choices like steak and fish, with an amazing selection of beer (bet you were wondering when I'd finally mention this) alongside some choice aperatifs, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages to go with your meal for those who hate fun. In all sincerity, this place was an amazing pit-stop after visiting the Sint-Sixtus Abbey -- their Bitterballen (marinated with De Struise's Pannepot) was simply amazing, and something that I've pitched to my chef friends back at home; whereas it's not quite local flavor, I ordered the Chicken and Pork Shoulder Tagine (marinated again, with De Struise's Pannepot) which was absolutely fantastic and hearty enough to get me through my remaining two brewery visits for the day (one of which was, you guessed it, De Struise Brouwers) I've mentioned De Struise Brouwers eight times in this review. Hopefully that will serve as good subliminal advice for you to go check them out, as they are--as mentioned previously--right across the street.
