After a couple months of communication with Jill Pretorius about our upcoming trip, we arrived at…read moreLHR to a driver waiting to take six adults (AND all of our luggage) to our hotel in Windsor. Jill arranged everything for our days prior to our cruise out of Southampton SEAMLESSLY! We arrived at our hotel, dropped our bags, changed, and headed out to Jill's van to tour the countryside... She is a remarkably educated tour guide! She had something to tell us about every nook and cranny we drove by! We toured Windsor, Wherwell, and Stonehenge on our first day (she tolerated ALL of us passing out in the van on the way back to our hotel due to jet lag). The next day, she had our tickets ready and handy... we got to Windsor Castle in time to tour St. George's Chapel before seeing the changing of the guard and then touring the grounds and state rooms; afterwards, she took us to Hampton Court Palace and a lovely lunch at the tilt yard cafe. Day three was as wonderful as could be. Given that Jill couldn't take all six of us AND our luggage on our journey down south, she had her wonderful hubby, Kevin, secure all of our bags in his car for the day while she drove us to Chawton (one of the last homes of Jane Austen), Bosham Quay, and Arundel Castle. Finally - after three amazing days of touring, she dropped us at our hotel in Southampton for our next day cruise out! I cannot recommend Jill enough. She was an asset to our trip, a phenomenal guide, highly intelligent, and a personality I could be around for a GOOD long time to come! I hope to get to see our new friend again some day! THANK YOU, Jill for facilitating such a wonderful adventure for my family!

Jill picked us up at our central London hotel at 6:00 AM on time, and drove us out to Stonehenge. From previous emails in setting up the private tour, she paid very close attention to what our interests were and brought aspects to the tour that would be meaningful to us. After Stonehenge, she drove us to Windsor Castle. Jill is very knowledgable and made us feel comfortable and welcome. She is a very good driver as we felt safe in her capable hands. Jill then drove us all the way out to Stansted to our final destination. It was nice to not have the stress of renting a car, adjusting to UK roads and cars, and to have pleasant and informative conversation all along the way. I would highly recommend Windsor Day Tours to anyone. We enjoyed getting to know Jill. She is truly a kind and caring person.

The Tudor House and Garden is a museum in the old part of Southampton…read more Built around 1492, the building was a grand house for most of its life until it became a museum in 1912. It has elements from every century since the 15th, as it has been much remodelled over the years. There's a good audio guided tour, which brings it to life. The exhibits are rather eclectic but the house itself includes lovely touches such as Tudor graffiti and floorboards made from 18th Century ship timbers. At the rear is a charming garden, which has been restored to its original Tudor form. Behind that, built into the town's mediaeval walls, is the so-called King John's Palace. Actually a town house belonging to a wealthy merchant built around 1180, it is a very rare example of Norman domestic architecture. The museum has a small shop and a nice modern cafe in the garden - this can be visited without paying for the museum tour. Staff were notably very friendly throughout our visit.

We spotted it on a week end trip in Southampton and decided that £4.50 for a ticket could go on the holiday expenses. Best idea in ages ! If you are in town, do yourself a favor and go. You will be welcome by the gosh of the Time Traveller and guided through time and way of life. Living in London, I have been used to not-so-funny museums but here, completely the opposite. Great history lesson without even knowing it, beautiful garden and playing areas for kids and grown ups. Oh and trust me, on your way out, that pot of jam and the tiny bottle of spirit, yes those ones, you want them. Trust me ;)

Preface: A couple of the one-star reviews on Google were very unfair to Lion Tours. One of the…read morereviewers clearly never went on the tour (writing on behalf of others) and the other reviewer was merely repeating the former reviewer's review. It seems that the only person "lacking variety" is the latter reviewer. I usually don't call out other reviewers but something had to be said before someone stepped on either of these landmines. Now, on with the review. Paul was the greatest tour guide in the history of tour guides... maybe ever. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the surrounding area and we were completely blown away by his attention to detail. Did you know that Thomas the Tank Engine was conceived on this route? Wild! Paul knew. He also accompanied us to Stonehenge itself and gave us an in-person walk-through of the site, which I hear the competition doesn't do. The other tours just drop you off and wait in the cafe for you to be done. A bit impersonal if you ask me. Paul even keeps spare rain jackets in case you didn't bring one to the Henge. What a saint. Need recommendations for what to do in Bath? Surprise, Paul's got them. If the other tours are Bieber and Swift albums, then Lion Tours would have to be Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill, an absolute classic. Would book again!

It is part of the tremendous "Portsmouth Historic Dockyard" experience (It also includes the HMS Victory, the HMS M.33 and the WWII submarine HMS Alliance, plus several museums) which offers at least a couple of days worth of exciting sight-seeing for adults as much as more the smaller fry. First things first: If you want to do all of the Portsmouth Harbour attractions in one day (better make it the full day, i.e. 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. in the summer and to 5 p.m. in the winter), make sure to book the "all attractions" ticket *ONLINE*, which will save you money: E.g. the single adult ticket costs UKP 32.00 on the door, but just 25.60 online. The HMS Warrior as an individual attraction alone costs UKP 18.00. While not as famous as Nelson's HMS Victory, the Warrior is a tremendously imposing ship physically, and full of exciting details to explore. The whole body of the ship is fitted with historic cannons, cabin furniture, hammocks, tables, plates used by the sailors of the time, etc etc. It really conveys convincingly how both the officers and, in particular, the rank and file on this ship lived and worked at the time. It's thrilling, sometimes disturbing to see tables with plates next to the cannons, next to the hammocks - eating, sleeping, fighting and dying in one and the same place. There are cabins for the officers, a map room. You can visit all the decks (be careful on those steep steps between the decks - it's almost inconceivable how sailors were supposed to run up and down those!) and photography is allowed everywhere in the ship. Since the lighting is much less low-key than on the HMS Victory you'll be able to make decent pictures even with smartphone and super zoom cameras. If you have any questions while you're exploring the vessel, there are several friendly guides on every deck who you can ask anything. Of course they're friendlier towards single ladies than to single guys. ;) Since HMS Warrior s only part of a large visitors' experience, if you're exhausted or hungry from your exploits there are several restaurants and cafés (sadly, no pub!) on the grounds of the dockyard nearby. Directly opposite of the Warrior you'll find the quay where the Harbour Cruise and the free boat ride to the HMS Alliance depart (included in the all attractions ticket). All in all this is a most exciting and intriguing tourist and historical attraction. Expect to spend 1-1.5 hours on the HMS Warrior alone.

David is an excellent local guide! He contacted me days before the tour just to confirm everything…read moreand answer any questions I had. He also let me know that the time was changing the night before our tour, which was very useful information as the hotel did not mention anything about a time change and we were not aware of it. David is very knowledgeable and shares a lot of information while driving to each destination. We learned about not only the sites we were set to see but also about the buildings, statues and areas that we passed along the way. We started our day at Hampton Court. David provided us with tips on how to make the most of our time there. We were able to explore on our own and then he picked us up for our lunch break. David had reservations already made for us at a cute restaurant on the river. We ate inside the restaurant and David stayed outside and was ready to go when we were done. The food and service there was excellent. We then continued to Windsor Castle. We were able to take all the time we wanted touring the castle and then shopped around the town afterwards. When we were ready, I simply sent David a text and he was there and ready to go in 5 minutes. We had a pleasant drive back to our hotel with great conversation. Ask him anything about the area and he will be able to answer with confidence. David is also knowledgeable regarding accessibility at the sites. My mom needed to use a cane that day and David was very patient and assisted her with getting in and out of the van. Additionally, we asked David about local markets to visit the next day and he provided us with information on several different ones. We went with the market he recommended and my mom had a blast walking around and shopping. Bottom line, we had a great time, we appreciated his service, and we would definitely book with David again.
