I've now been having my older Honda Accord serviced at this dealership for over a decade. They have inspected and maintained my car during both regular fluid changes and required inspections. The few repairs I've ever needed were way bellow the costs of the local dealerships. Both myself and neighbors usually give the guys nice tips because we don't want to lose them. In fact once a nearby Honda dealership claimed I had two engine oil leaks which were totally bogus, the cost to repair would have cost me $1,000. to remediate. Bruce and his techs put the car on the lift, then drove it -there were no problems as printed out by the dealership. This was over five years ago, although I reported this to Honda national, never got a reply! Honest people but short on supportive attitude. Often brusque to the point of scorn. Perhaps a devoted clientele of 35 years has removed the incentive to cultivate customer service. When you enter, the greeting is a snarled 'what do you want?' as if an apology is due for bothering them. Intimidating for an automotive non-expert and often so rattling as to dislodge issues one intended to raise. Repeated efforts to be courteous and appreciative have failed to create any reciprocation . Each visit feels like I am coming in for the first time and am unlikely to return, so why bother to be gracious All of that said, there is an ethic of scrupulous honesty. On several occasions, the owner refused to charge me for what turned out to be a minor adjustment. That's worth a lot. But with some consistent humanity, it would be worth much more. read more

A delightful auto repair experience. Drove in at noon and described the rattling sound the car makes when at idle. They put my car up on the lift and diagnosed it within 15 minutes as an exhaust regulator crack, courtesy of the NYC potholes. The mechanic made a few calls to order the part while another changed out the bad bulb on my brake light. Luckily the exact part was available for order and delivery asap. They called to let me know that the repair was done and car ready after only a couple of hours. I remembered that an oil change was due and had them take care of that as well. Lots of great reviews for these guys, and at one time I'd have offered one of those. Went to them for years and years. Sometimes rude, sometimes not, you just took it as part of the personality. Not now. They are definitely not out to make a buck -- won't over charge, won't try and rip you off, that is absolutely true and why they have two stars. They don't have 3 because 3 is "A-OK" and they are not that anymore. After a number of various things that I took the car in for, paid for, and then found out it wasn't actually done -- but they hadn't charged me much, they did fix it, and they had my loyalty -- my last straw was this: went for a braking noise that was happening at high speeds and was told nothing could be done if they could not hear the noise. I insisted they check the brakes, they check them, claim to find nothing wrong, I drive away happy. And then the noise again. Same noise. Turns out a tire rod was bent and the brakes were wicked low. This garage let me drive away after telling me they checked my brakes and could find nothing wrong. So be very careful about putting your wallet ahead of your safety. These guys may be offering you a good deal, but they may not be doing a thorough job on your car. I wish I could be nicer to them, because for years they were my recommended go-to garage, but over the past 1-2 years, service has gone downhill and you just can't play with your life. read more

I am never one to write a review, especially negative... but I felt my experience with this particular shop warranted one. I called to see if I could bring my vehicle into this garage for a state inspection later this afternoon. My dad owns an autobody/mechanic shop, so I know from experience that some shops only do inspections during certain hours. I asked if I could come by at around 3 in the afternoon - I'm a teacher, and that's the earliest I could get over there. The employee I was speaking with on the phone was seemingly being advised on what to tell me from a superior, and I heard him in the background. The manager was unreasonably and irrationally rude - "We've been open since 6:30 AM - why can't he come in sooner?" He repeated an iteration of this multiple times, and I explained that that was the soonest I could get over there. I was in awe of how rude this guy was being over a simple question. In all of my years dealing with mechanics, this was by far the most off-putting experience I've ever had with one. There was zero reason to be rude in this situation - a simple "We don't do inspections after 2:30" would have sufficed. I will take my business elsewhere. read more

These guys are great (ask for either Mark or Bruce). I was recommended here by Dale-way Auto (another great automotive shop). Two weeks ago I had gotten my oil changed at Westchester Toyota. I know these dealership places usually rip you off and are way overpriced, but I had a $19.99 oil change coupon, so I went. While there, they did their 50-point inspection or what not. Basically, they told me that my car had a leak in the timing belt, my brakes needed to be flushed and my transmission fluid changed. All these services were about $200-300 each and all of them were "necessary" or my car could break down and all other manners of disaster. I was worried but I didn't have that kind of money to do these services. So I left and went to South Riverdale to get a second opinion. They put my car up on the lift and after doing their own inspection, told me that they didn't see anything wrong with my car. He did recommend that I get a tire alignment, but since he couldn't do it there, he recommended another shop for that (Mavis Tire Discount, to be exact) He didn't try to BS me into buying more expensive services and didn't take advantage of the fact that I was clueless about cars. In fact, he didn't even charge me a dime for doing the inspection. Definitely coming back again because I know these guys are honest and will give me the best (and right) service for my car. read more

Here's what. Most of the time when I have to do something with my car, my boyfriend comes with me and talks to the mechanic and makes it known that he knows stuff about cars and then (hopefully) I don't get ripped off. I know nothing about cars. I got my first car a few months ago and I know I love it, but that's it. A couple of weeks ago I was due for an oil change and made plans to go on a longish car trip and knew I wanted to change my oil before I went. And of course I put it off till the morning I was leaving and of course my boyfriend was working so I had to go by myself. So I had to do research and find somewhere to get my oil changed in the area without paying an arm and a leg and getting a car wash too (I didn't need a car wash because I was going upstate where my car would get super dirty anyway). Enter South Riverdale Service. I dropped my car off, was told to come back in 15 minutes, paid my 25 bucks, and I was out of there. The mechanic didn't try to tack anything onto my oil change. If there's something he doesn't know how to repair, he'll address you to another place he trusts. They made an oil change for $25 and fixed a button on the dashboard that was stuck in with no charge. Yelp you are soooo good to me! My story - sooo apparently, I had a busted front passenger side head light and had no clue. Cop pulls me over, tells me I have 24hrs to fix it or get a fine + points on my license. I work in the Bronx, also had a TON of commitments for the following evening. My first thought was to try a Pep Boys shop somewhere close to work. Pep boys opens at 7:30am...I start work at that time, so I needed more convenient options. I headed to Yelp where I saw a number of great reviews regarding 'South Riverdale' and so, history was written in the form of this review. I got there a little after 6:30am. MAJOR plus! they are open from 6:30am to 5pm. I simply walked in and asked the owner/mechanic if he could fix my headlight. He said sure. I drove it in, popped the trunk and within 10 minutes, he replaced it. I was so impressed I asked him to do my yearly inspection. Unfortunately, I failed but he was nice enough to quote me on the work needed to be done. I will surely return. Pricing is fair and reasonable, staff are kind and extremely helpful. I highly recommend, and will be returning. read more

This was my second time going to a place I didn't know personally (my friends previous garage was sold and new management is not the same). I went based on reviews and I'm glad I did because I would have never known about this gem! The guys at SRS are great and honest. I fully trust them and they don't mind hearing you out or talking to you about how your day went. Had oil and filter changed here and some work on my air box which was leaking and causing CEL to go on. They did it for the fairest price I've ever heard of in the city. They are not about the money. They are about the service. They will tell you how much a service is (based on year, make, and model) over the phone which no place will do! They are not desperate to squeeze you if they do that. They are straight forward take my price or leave it. Other places will say you have to come in to see how much they can squeeze you for (after all you did drive all that way so the garage has the leverage - you can't just hang up the phone) or garages ask you to get a diagnostic for $50+ and then we'll talk about price - talk about a bait and hook - which the $50 is the "included" into the labor. Nice gimmick! (Here give me $50 dollars to find out whats wrong and then I'll put it towards putting in a screw and charge you $25 for putting in a screw). These guys are good. They don't do transmissions though...based on brand, you will need to do research as to which shops specialize with your transmission. ________ After coming to them these guys on and off for years I was turned away. In an effort to save money and be eco-friendly, I switched over to long life oil filters rated up to 15,000 miles and full synthetic oil, so I could just do a drain and fill every 5,000 miles and replace the filter every 10,000 miles (long before these filters were advised to be replaced). Understandably, I was told that the oil would outlast the filter and would clog, so he wouldn't do it and turned me away. Look,I respect his opinion, but some mechanics I have done this with are always touting that synthetics and long life oil filters are getting better and better, as are the service intervals (some cars now advise on 10,000 mile-15,000 mile intervals). I bought my own oil and requested a drain and fill, explained my situation, and was turned away. Never have I been turned away from a garage before - people are usually willing to work and make money. Wasn't the customer always right? I was buying labor - a service - not a guarantee or warranty, so there was no reason to be turned away. If a customer wants a ham sandwich, without the bread, by God, just give the customer ham and take his money - the customer isn't going to come back suing for stomach pain. More so, as I politely declined the service, I heard some guys muttering "kids...." as I turned by back to head out. Not only did was that rude, it really speaks to what is happening in our country. No wonder the likes of Sears and JCPenny are struggling and on the verge of bankruptcy; because they don't adapt to what customers want. No wonder why Chinese and Mexicans are displacing the average American worker, because they are willing to work according to your needs. I am nearing 200,000 miles (knock on wood) with this car and if I want to buy a service, I have a right to dictate it. To be turned away for a service is like being turned away from a restaurant, because you have a food allergy and want food cooked without peanuts. I will be taking my business elsewhere, probably to a younger shop with mechanics eager to fill the order. read more

I took my 2007 Honda Ridgeline there for a noise and a mechanic quoted me over $3000 in repair costs and flat out considered my car a piece of junk . When I said that his diagnosis was discouraging and that maybe I should take it to one of those street mechanics and get a better estimate , a Spanish speaking worker there starting cursing me out saying I was a racist for saying that . When I asked him why he was calling me a racist and cursing at me , he said that because the owner is white. He continued to yell profanities , spitting on the floor and tells me to get the fuck out of the shop. When again I asked why he was still cursing, he starts to record me and the vehicle. The 2 mechanics , both white, did nothing to stop this man from berating me . I'm sure that even if I was out of line this incident could have been handled differently. read more

I can't recommend South Riverdale Service enough! They are extremely honest people and do what's right for their customers. I brought my car in without an appointment because as I was driving out of town, I was unfortunately the victim of a scam in which someone in a mechanic's uniform told me that my car was smoking. As he looked at my car and demanded money, he also stole my radiator cap. When I brought it to South Riverdale Service, not only were they willing to take a look at my car right away, they also ordered a new radiator cap for me that was there within the hour.
