There's the Dover Marine War Memorial (Marine Station in the Western Docks), British Legion War Memorial (on the promenade), and this beautiful, must-see memorial (also on the prom). The main words read: "Es flogen gegen England" ... German for "It flew against England." Its claim to fame is the memorial is armored plating, and gives the dates shells were fired from a long range gun at Sangatte (a township in the Pas-de-Calais district, on the northern coast of France on the English Channel). Erected by the Dover Harbour Board in 1954, it reads: "PRESENTED TO THE TOWN OF DOVER / BY THE BRITISH LEGION, CALAIS BRANCH Section of armoured plating dismantled from one of the German long range guns at Sangatte, Calais. The 84 rounds recorded formed part of the 2226 shells fired from these batteries at the harbour and town of Dover during the period 1940 to 1944. " It has a perfect location ... right off the promenade, overlooking the water, just a stone's throw from the deep, pebbled beach on Dover's Outer Harbour. To me, it joins the White Cliffs as a must-see while in Dover!

Canterbury Cathedral is a truly awe-inspiring structure. It doesn't begin well with the entrance…read moresquashed into a market square of shops but once you're inside the beauty or the building is obvious. I don't know much about architecture so I can't tell you what style it is built in but even to an amateur eye it is spectacular. You are allowed to tour the entire building and usually there are guided tours by local residents. On Sundays there are no tours but audioguides are available in a selection of European languages. Things to watch out for is the plaque commemorating the volunteer fire wardens who kept watch over the cathedral during WW II, the extraordinary memorial to Thomas Becket, murdered Archbishop of Canterbury, and the inner sanctum where you can see the seats of the Cardinals. Though my personal favourite cathedral is Lincoln, Canterbury is well worth a visit.

A place like nowhere else in England's green and pleasant land it is the only official desert. Hard to believe as it is next to the sea and several man made lakes it is actually incredibly dry and is formed from the largest stretch of shingle in Europe. An area of special scientific interest and bird watchers paradise all in the shadow of the Dungeness atomic power station. A scene of windswept beach huts, fishing boats and lots and lots of shingle. (See photo below) And at its heart is Derek Jarman's rather stunning black and yellow cottage with the words of the first stanza and the last five lines of the last stanza of John Donne's poem, The Sun Rising set in raised type on the side of the cottage. (See photo below) The cottage garden which he developed in the later years of his life is styled around reclaimed pieces of timber salvaged from the sea and salt loving plants. The central point is that of a statue of an RAF pilot looking out over the skies towards France, with the statue itself situated in the centre of 3 paths, which when you see them from a height actually represent the three blades of a propeller. The whole site feels quiet and respectful, and like all war memorials is extremely moving.

Rebuilt by Edward I on the present elevated site in 1277 after floods destroyed the old town, and fortified against French invaders, to-day it feels as if in a time warp, its quiet streets full of rustic clapperboard and tile-hung houses and lovely gardens. Laid out in perfect grid form, it is the first example of town planning in England. It was also one of the famous Cinque Ports, which provided ships and men to defend the coastline in return for certain privileges. To-day, Wincheslea now feels more village than town, despite its impressive location and fortifications. At its heart, set in a huge open green space, is St Thomas's church. Built along with the town in the 1280's, it also came under the patronage of Edward I. Unfortunately, repeated attacks by the French severely damaged both the church and the town, and the economy of the town never recovered. As a result, the church to-day is but a remnant of a once bigger and grander building: only the chancel and its aisles survive, together with the ruins of the transepts. It is not clear if the nave was ever built - had it been, it would have been jaw-dropping. But the quality of what is left reflects its royal patronage. Clustered piers soar to a lofty roof, and the windows have beautiful decorated tracery, surrounded with blind tracery with purbeck marble shafts. These form a suitable setting for its magnificent tombs, of astonishing quality and worthy of any cathedral. In the north aisle, are a knight, lady and gentleman, executed in black marble, under lavish decorated gothic canopies. It is thought they may have been brought from the old church, now lost to the sea. Better still are the tombs of the two Alard brothers, one of whom was an admiral in Edward I's fleet. Resplendent in their armour, and under magnificent tall pointed canopies, they are worth a detour on any itinerary. Also noteworthy is the modern glass by Douglas Strachan, regarded as the Scotland's greatest stained glass artist. Commemorating the suffering of World War I, they have bold, swirling patterns and colours. After your visit, wander around the lanes of the town before visiting the Court Hall musem: like the church, this dates from the 1280's, albeit much rebuilt over the years. Rest your feet afterwards in the 'New Inn' pub or the tea rooms nearby.

Everything was very organized, and very well maintained. The views surrounding us were remarkable, from the salt mountains and the clear sky ... absolutely stunning.

There is a lovely walled vegetable garden with accessible greenhouses. A real garden of seasons. The house is beautiful. Our tour guide, Betty, was very knowledgeable, spoke clearly and had lots of interesting facts about the family who had lived in the house over the years. Her father had been the Head Gardener there so could feel a nice personal link to the house. Every room was beautifully presented, full of artifacts, lovely porcelain and nic-nacs that the last owner had wanted to be on display. Definitely worth a visit.
