This is the first Catholic Parish on the Gulf coast and was established in Mobile in 1703. For those of you keeping track, this is one year after the founding of Mobile. In 1704, Father Henri Roulleaux De la Vente was the first pastor of the Church of Fort Louis de la Louisiane (Mobile). When the City of Mobile was relocated to its present site in 1711, the Parish Church was rebuilt on the West side of Royal street just North of Conti Street. Some limited history: The CME church can assign pastors every year. If an assigned pastor is amenable to the congregation and is doing good things for the church, he/she can stay at that church for multiple years. However, if the opposite is true (the pastor is tearing the church apart and causing members to leave), the congregation can complain vehemently to the Bishop and cause the pastor to be moved to a different church. In the last 4-5 years, the latter happened to thus congregation. In July 2014, they were assigned a new pastor. So far, he seems to be good for the church because the congregation is beginning to get larger and members are beginning to return to services. Sunday Service lasts about 2 hr (as is normal for predominantly black churches; about 50% of the service involves a solo or the choir singing) and starts at 10 am on Sundays. Sunday School begins at 8:45a. The church contains many organizations that a perspective member can join. The congregation is welcoming, loving and accepting.
