South Church is a wonderful church. Pastor Don helps us to learn our Bible and to dig deeper. Even though it is a large church you can form great relationships through Bible Studies and Small Groups. I really enjoy South Church. There are lots of Bible Studies to choose from throughout the year. The sermons are scriptural and thought provoking and the pastors are well gifted with preaching and teaching abilities. The Bible study communities are a great place to connect with others to share spiritual insights and to pray for one another. Many of the pastors and other leadership staff do a good job at responding to my occasional emails and are interested in my thoughts and fellowship. The praise and worship is done with excellence and quality musicianship. It is a larger than average church but still has a home-y feeling. read more

I dunno, I have very mixed emotions about this church on the south west side of Lansing. First, It's HUGE. Second, their executive leadership is on the board of directors at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids. Third, they are THE Most ORGANIZED church I have EVER seen. As in they have their stuff together when it comes to what goes where when (especially the children's services), not as in the religion aspect of organized. However, all that is for naught. I was entirely turned off by the Holier than Thou attitude of the entire pastoral staff. They have huge sticks up their collective rear. They have good intentions, but their execution sucks, giving them the appearance of an exclusive "old boys club". I would have rated them a 5 before, but since dealing with their pastoral staff, I have to say a 2 at best now. I'll probably never return here because of it. read more

This is the best church I have ever been to! It is very large, very organized, and the pastors are AMAZING! I highly recommend this church to anyone age group! They have very good pastors at this church and the kids love it! Everyone who I have told about this church has started going here! They love it! I've been a member of South Church since 2003. The reason I loved South in 2003 is still relevant today; the messages from our senior pastor, and associate pastors, are relevant and convicting as they teach God's Word with loving hearts relying upon the Holy Spirit for results. South has an interesting demographic in that we have a strong college ministry, we're growing in the 22 - 35 age group, healthy in the 35 - 55 demographic, and yet are blessed to have many senior saints in membership. I have friends in each "demographic" and am fortunate to observe the excitement and energy of new believers, yet the experience of senior men to encourage my walk with Christ. There are many ways to connect and serve at South: small groups, a vibrant women's ministry, kid's ministries, a growing Helping Hands ministry, music, men's groups, etc. If you are looking for local church to partner and worship with, or just in town on a visit, come check out South. Who knows, perhaps the Lord may lead you to join us, and you may end up having a similar experience to mine. read more

I have been attending South Church for over 5 years. It's a big church, but it is amazing how in a short time you can feel right at home if you make an effort to get involved. The teaching is solid and biblical and I always find the services are very spiritually edifying overall. The pastors are very gifted and not afraid to tell the truth with kindness. The women's and children's ministries are especially high quality. We have a wide age range of attenders: plenty of young families, a robust college group, and lots of mature believers to learn from as well. There is a lot of emphasis on missions and the church gives a large chunk of their budget to that, including the city mission in town. No church is perfect, but I know plenty of people there who are doing their best to love and serve Jesus and follow the Holy Spirit's leading in their lives. We are seeing new believers coming to faith, so that says something to me. Also, I know I can invite anyone, regardless of their background, skin color, whether or not they have nice clothes, and I know they will be welcomed, their kids will be cared for, they will be invited to participate in beautiful worship and they will hear the good news preached. South church in Lansing has an appealing atmosphere. While many loving folks are in attendance, Their biggest negative is the pastoral leadership staffs various ministry needs with a good ole boy style of leadership. From my experiences, South Church in Lansing, MI is a good example of how the Baptist Churches have typically been regarded as, "clicky". Knowledge of the scriptures is not a problem in any fashion, however filtering answered prayers by regulating the people God sends is a huge problem. Sure, if God wants it to happen - it will happen, but South leadership, may not quite understand this concept fully. I recommend Born again, Bible believing, God fearing folks join to help minister in reverse to the leadership to prevent a continuation of this problem. read more
