Blending that soup!
Rachel A.

Friday night couldn't have been better spent. Met some fantastic yelpers and had a great time with plenty of laughs - and what better way to do that than over some warm soup on a cold winter's night?! This Yelp event definitely lived up to what it promised and more. We were greeted to some champagne and introduced to Rob and Carlie from Soupa Organic Soup Kitchen. We were then split into four groups to make four different soups under the guidance of Rob. It was great fun getting to know our fellow yelpers over some group work soup concocting. Given that we were restricted by time and had to improvise at times, I think the groups did an amazing job; but must say that by far the winner was the delicious seafood chowder. Amazing! Fun was had by all with plenty of laughs and smiles; and will definitely be stopping by for some delicious soup at Soupa on those especially dreary days! Thanks to the wonderful Yelp crew whom organised this great event and the 'Soupa' helpful Rob and Carlie who hosted a great cooking class.

What a fantastic idea for a winter event! Anita you killed it again. It was a chilly Friday night, I was exhausted and not in the most sociable of moods... my couch was calling. But, not wanting to cancel, I hauled my dreary butt out the door and to The Box Factory Community centre, and gosh I am so glad I did. First of all, although I'd heard of it, I'd never been to The Box Factory. What a great facility! Gold star to Adelaide City Council for looking after this gem. It was a perfect little spot for a cooking class, with a large open kitchen/dining area. Apparently they do cooking classes here on the last Friday of each month, so I'll have to check them out again. As for the soup cooking itself, Rob from Soupa is definitely excited about soup and sharing his soupy love. We were split into 4 groups to make four different soups: Potato & Leek, Seafood Chowder, Pumpkin & Ginger and good ol' Chicken Noodle. I am quite a confident cook, so I was attending more for the opportunity to be sociable and eat some delicious (free!) soup. But given my team chose the chowder I was also pushed out of my comfort zone - which is fab. My only constructive feedback would be that there were a LOT of us in a tight kitchen, and therefore I'm not sure we all learnt too much. But that just goes to show how popular Yelp Adelaide's awesome events are. Plus we all got tasty soup and a cosy place to spend our Friday night, so I'm not that bothered at all!

Mmm delicious soups... Made by yelpers!

My two favourite characteristics of Yelp are that 1) it is a vehicle for me to discover amazing…read morelocal businesses and 2) that I can meet new people, who I would most likely never meet in my usual circles - but who love Adelaide and the amazing things this city has to offer as much as I do. Because of this, the Yelp newbie events are always really exciting to me. Our fabulous CM Anita D. does a great job of choosing venues and activities that are super interactive and encourage newbies and old Yelpers alike to mingle and just have a great time. Craftapalooza at Flinders Street Market was no exception. When I saw the event listing I was so keen. I have been trying to teach myself to get a bit crafty and so this event was a perfect motivator. Anita managed to secure a class with Vesna from Minnie Crochet Boutique. This class really made the Craftapalooza event come together. Vesna's tutelage was brilliant. She was patient, friendly, fun and supportive. I felt like I was learning to crochet from an Aunty I never knew I had. I am so keen to attend Minnie Crochet Boutique's crochet classes so I can get my granny square blanket skills on fleek. I want to be that Aunty that makes baby blankets for EVERYONE! Vesna and Anita have set me on the path to help me realise that dream. Thanks ladies. Thank you also to the amazing newbies (and fellow Elite Ngan) I had a great time and I hope to see all your smiley faces at another event soon. :)

A 10am breakfast made a leisurely way to start the day at Hart's Collective. I never knew this place existed and was the perfect place to sit on the waters edge in a renovated shipping container and take in the view. Very eclectic with the old and new furnishings. Breakfast was ordered at the counter, and I chose free range poached eggs on sourdough with a side of smashed avocado and a latte to wash it down. No complaints from me as the eggs perfectly poached and avocado perfectly smashed. Then we drove to The Clipper City of Adelaide for our tour. It was great listening to the history and hard to soak in all the information. Being made with a steel frame the height was better than most ships of that era, and we learned that the wooden frame was coated with tar, horse hair and copper. It will be great to see the renovations progress as time goes on. Unfortunately Bruce had to leave our tour and so Anita took complete charge, and onwards we went. Just made the dolphin cruise in time and we had a lovely sail along the Port River. Glad I had my hat and a little sunscreen, but this didn't stop the wind burn. It was the perfect weather to cruise and I had a lovely chat with Captain Brian Thomas aka Cobra Dobra who is a retired MFS officer and SANFL Sturt lover and he steered our boat without incident. Being rather famished, we ended up at Argo Hellenic Greek Cafe on Commercial Road. They have a Monday to Friday lunch menu, and charged only $1 extra being a Saturday. They even had sparkling red (Leconfield Syn) by the glass. I ordered a lamb yiros but it didn't come wrapped as expected. The meat tasted like yesterday's reheated on the grill, only two quarters of pita, no garlic sauce and the tomatoes were too pale and tasteless. It was a disappointment and I wouldn't hurry back, but in saying that I enjoyed a tasting of my friends chicken dish...and they did have sparkling red. Last was a visit to the Maritime Museum. I've been here before but this time I obtained a printout for 50c of my great grandmothers ship Trevelyan when she came out on her maiden voyage in 1865. The staff were very knowledgable and happy to talk about the the four trips it made to Australia before sinking off shore in South Africa. We left there about 5pm so was a full day, and from start to finish was a great day. Thanks Bruce and Anita!

Super casual, non threatening and great fun, and I always love meeting new Yelpers! This time we ventured to Adventure Rooms in Rundle Mall. None of us had been before so we weren't totally sure what to expect. All I knew is that we'd get an hour to escape a locked room, using clues given to us within that room. We played the 'Black Queen' room. We split into 2 teams of 6 and attacked the game in a dual format. That meant that one team was locked in the second part of the room and the other team in the first section. Then the first team had to try and escape while the second team had to try and catch them! I can't give away too much because it would ruin the experience for anyone else going. But just let me say, there were codes, keys, locks, gadgets, blindfolds, handcuffs and assaulting of mannequins involved! I can't wait to try out the other room. Was great that despite it being the first time most of us had met, our team cooperated amazingly and managed to escape both rooms! Thanks Anita, Yelp, Adventure Rooms and all the Newbie Yelpers (and Moe) for another great night out!! If you are new to Yelp and are thinking about coming along to an event, do not hesitate! Join us and make some new friends and laugh a lot :)

First of all, thank you to Ngan for the invitation and Anita for shouting us our drinks and introducing to us Cards against Humanity. The waitress was really helpful in explaining the drinks on offer - we were spoiled for choice! For food, we had the baked Camembert. I would highly recommend this if you're a cheese lover. Imagine melted stringy cheese on crusty bread! The best part was the crunch and slight saltiness from the figs and pistachios! It can't get any better than this! Overall, great night with the girls! We had a fair few laughs and learned one or more things about each other. A memorable night indeed :)

Our guide Claire from Art After Dark was clearly passionate about what she does (and did a great job even though she was unwell!). It was great to have her to guide us around the venues and tell us about some of the exhibitions that were part of the SALA festival, as well as what they exhibit year round. I never realised the Samstag Gallery is open later on Thursdays and I love the idea of heading down after the workday and being able to listen to some live music while perusing the artworks! I love visiting new art places and especially seeing some things from lesser known or up and coming artists. Sometimes it is hard to know where to go or what to see so this was a great taster of places to keep an eye on! I will definitely be keeping an eye on the Art After Dark events. My favourite spot on the tour was the Jam Factory. I have been in the retail section several times before but I never realised that the studios are open too, and that you can wander around and watch the various artists at work. I could have sat and watched the glass blowers all night, especially with the warmth drifting up on a chilly evening! Thanks Anita and Art After Dark for a very interesting evening!

Thank you to our outgoing CM of Adelaide - Anita for arranging this event…read more It was well attended by Yelpers and friends. I didn't get there till after 5pm when the party was in full swing. A free drink upon checking into the event and I chose the Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyard (one of the sponsors) Pinot noir rose. Bit dry but a good choice for this function. A big platter of assorted cheese and accompaniments were the start of the nibbles and there were heaps of Yelp give aways like sunglasses, sweat bands, badges, bags, key rings, freezebies etc. A Yelp cotton bag with goodies can be picked up as well, handy and informative flyers within. The winners of the best photos of this 'food porn exhibition ' were announced and prizes were awarded and thank you to the judges for picking the great shots out of so many entries! Tough pickings indeed. More food from Soi 38 were passed around and it was great to have them aboard to enable us to sample their food. Will have to now properly go to their restaurant to have more, what a teaser! Thank you to Market Kitchen for the venue which is perfect to exhibit the selected Yelpers best shot of food and thanks also goes to Atkins Photography for a guidance sheet on how to take photos of food which most of us Yelpers love to do. Overall this had been a great event and it was fun to have the competition and winners were well awarded with prizes donated by so many other sponsors.
