We are in town for the National History Day California competition, and there just weren't any appealing breakfast places near the convention center. We tried this place after looking at Yelp. Now, we love breakfast , and we road trip A LOT. We have pretty high standards for home style food. The Soup Shoppe delivers! We had a scrumptious breakfast here. Absolutely deeeelish! If you're looking for hoity toity or chain restaurant food, this isn't it. This IS real deal home cooking. I ordered #2 French toast, egg and bacon. My scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked, not scorched at all. Bacon was not too crispy as I'd asked. They provided sugar free syrup on my request. Hubs ordered chicken fried steak and eggs. Boy howdy! It was hand-battered and came out crispy and well-seasoned. Bacon gravy was divine (I had a bite and wanted to eat it all). Biscuit and gravy was yum. Did I mention this gravy was BACON gravy??? Ya don't find that very often, and this is just like mama used to make. In fact, Ana tells us that she makes it with both sausage and bacon! Biscuit was freshly baked from scratch. Over-medium eggs were perfect. Great coffee shop coffee and cups were kept full. Highly recommend this place for breakfast and wish we could stay for lunch! Went here based on the great reviews. Quite possibly one of the worst chef salads I've ever had. Who messes up a salad?? Bagged lettuce, unpeeled cucumbers sliced in half inch rings, over ripe tomatoes and cheap commercial dressing. I had been told by a couple of friends that this place was great for breakfast and I was really excited to try it out. I will now be reevaluating the relationships with these friends as they don't know me OR breakfast well. I should've just walked out when I saw the dust on the walls, shelves, and ceiling fans (ick) but I went against my instincts and took my seat. Why they only had 3 servers working on a Saturday morning is beyond me but once mine finally get around to me (9 minutes after I had been seated) I had to wait another 10 minutes to have my order taken. Again, I almost left once the server same to my table again with coffee I didn't ask for instead of the intent of taking my order, but I stayed. The final red flag should've been clear to me when I ordered the home fries with my eggs and was asked "do you want those with or without onions?"...where in the world do they make them without onions? (More on that later) Needless to say when my food finally arrived, it was lukewarm but I had been seated waiting for so long and wasn't in the mood. Let me be clear: I waited a total of 50 minutes before I got my food and I know for a fact because the podcast I was listening to had progressed that long during my wait, and it took me 15 minutes to leave about 60% of what I had ordered behind on the plate. The eggs weren't seasoned and cold. But the potatoes...so the fears I had about the potatoes were confirmed when I bit into the few bites I tried. My guess is they make the potatoes without onions and then soften NOT COOK the onions separately and add them later. And here is the problem with that: the potatoes have no flavor whatsoever and the onions aren't completely cooked?? What?! Lol...grossest breakfast I've EVER had and the only reason I didn't ask for my money back is guilt. Save your money, go somewhere else. read more

This place has been around for as long as I can remember. As other reviewers have mentioned it has that local charm and can be quite busy. They have a great breakfast menu and it is one of my favorites for a Sunday morning brunch. Great omelette selection and nice combo breakfasts as well. Lunch menu is also very good with homemade soups (vegetable beef is my favorite!) and great hot and cold sandwiches as well as a good selection of salads, hot meals, daily specials, ect. Went for a sunday breakfast, they weren't too busy.. Food was really good but the service lacked. We had a lady take our order and a young man do the rest. We didn't receive any refills on our coffee or water. My coffee cup had so many coffee ground at the bottom I had to spit it out. I Love the food here. My favorite is the Tuna Melt and I add Avocado and tomatoes! I have never found another place that makes it just as good . I have eaten there many times with family and friends. My wife always gets either two things: 1) Slice Turkey Sandwich, (which is the really Thanksgiving Turkey) 2: Soup Shoppe Scrambled w/ Polish Sausage (Grilled Potatoes, onions, eggs, and seasoning). The Soups are great. we love the Chicken Tortilla, and Baked Bean Polish Sausage. It is a great place for any and all occasions. Wake up late on the weekends or quick places before work. read more

Saturday morning. Rolled out to find a new breakfast experience. Called upon yelp to point me in the right direction. It led me to the "The soup shop". So we entered into a tiny room with no one to greet you or tell you to sit where you like. Found a table and were served drinks quickly. From then on everything was like waiting on grass to grow. While waiting an extreme amount of time for our food to come we endured Arctic like conditions as the fans churned away. Then the glorious moment came, the food arrived. Except to my horror as i did my best to slog through what i felt i needed to sustain me until lunch i ate uncooked english muffin, undercooked eggs, barely cooked home fries covered in some gray matter dumped from a can with no flavor. The other meal at the table was hash browns that we uncooked, and an omelette that was judged to be pretty decent. I began writing this on my phone when i finished eating and we were never offered a check or had our plates cleared. No one checked to see if our drinks were good the whole time. My fiance and I ate there for the first time today. The place was packed, so we knew it must be good. We sat upstairs, the service was quick and friendly. The prices were very resonable. I ordered the french toast breakfast special (#2) and he ordered the biscuits and gravy special (#3), with a side of crispy hash browns, all worth every penny. This is a great place to come for breakfast. You really can't go wrong with anything, except maybe the Italian omelet (meatballs, marinara, and cheese in eggs), which is not a regular special. Their pot pies are really good, but you have to reserve them, as they sell out fast. Their prices are fair, the portions are fairly generous (though a few more home fries never hurt), and the service is great. read more

Went there last Sunday with family, 6 in our party. Place is so small and crowded with small tables that we couldn't sit together without a L-O-N-G wait. so we were across room from each other. I read another review that said this place had charm, but crowded and old is not necessarily charm. Staff was friendly enough, but aren't they supposed to be? It wasn't over-the-top friendly as I've experienced in other places, not rude either, but just okay. Took forever to get a cup of coffee (you can judge a good place on their coffee, and there's was not good. Tasted old and bitter and was lukewarm.) Took me asking for cream three separate times. My daughter asked for orange juice, which took even longer. Everyone had their drinks (mostly lemonade) and I had my lukewarm coffer while my daughter waited and waited for her OJ. Again, I had to ask three separate people as I thought they forgot it. Finally the waitress said, "he's making it." I could see a young guy behind counter dumping a frozen can of juice into a pitcher and throwing water into it and hastily stirring. No OJ during breakfast hour??? And frozen, watered down juice? I don't even do that at home, much less when you want to take your family to what was supposed to be a nice breakfast out. The wait for our breakfast was a half an hour! I think the initial wait for a table is long because it takes so long to serve customers, not because the place serves good food. I've come here before with my husband a few years back but not since he's passed. They food used to be pretty good, but it was lunch we ordered. Maybe new owners, maybe new cooks, maybe not worth it for breakfast??? I was, in all fairness, trying to think what was exceptional about the place, what would be a good reason to go back or recommend it OR what is positive about it period. Nothing at all comes to mind. Nothing. So sad. Riverside needs a GOOD breakfast diner!!! One we can proudly recommend when people come to visit. There used to be Lori's on Van Buren that was good, but that has recently gone downhill too. It would be nice if there were a good, independent place unique to Riverside. Guess I'll stay home and cook next time as it wasn't worth the money. Sorry I sound so mean, but Yelp is about helping people find good businesses whatever they may be, or letting people know about bad experiences. Maybe this will help them get better. My wife and I like this place and will continue to eat there. That being said, my last breakfast there wasn't very good. I was happy to see they use what I think are baby red potato's but there didn't seem to be any seasoning on them whatsoever. You could taste the potato and maybe that was the whole idea, but I thought they were seriously under-seasoned if at all. Basically, very bland. I don't normally add salt to anything but even some salt from the table didn't help much. Maybe I should have put more, but I would expect the cook to season the potato's at least somewhat. My other issue was with the toast. It was burnt. Literally was shades of black in the middle. Really surprised they gave it to me that way. Service was and has always been good there. The staff makes you feel at home and comfortable. This is comfort food for us and as I said we like this place. - Thanks for the reply Michele, we certainly will be back. read more
