It's not often that a shop window is off-putting but with the sugary sweet pink walls and cutesy clothes on display, I did have to think twice before entering Soukous. I was pleased I decided to see past the pink as this is a fantastic clothing, gift and homeware shop, split over two floors. On the ground floor there are lots of cute greetings cards, stationary, photo frames and children's clothing. Downstairs there is a wall of women's clothing but it was all very floral and a little too hippy-ish for my liking, but perfect for a festival-goer or a yummy mummy. Whilst down here I barely got a look at the large range of Hello Kitty products before a gaggle of teenage girls swept down the stairs, cooing over which Kitty lip gloss to buy (I believe she picked strawberry in the end, much to the disgust of her friend). There was also a large selection of plastic novelty bows and plates, including a cute red and white polka dot set that I know I would never use but want all the same. The prices were competitive and with so many gift type products in here I would defiantly come back here the next time I need a present for a female friend.

Pink, pink, and more pink! A shop that scares men and excites the girlie girls. Think of anything a girlie girl would like and Soukous are guaranteed to have it. I cannot imagine somebody failing to find something suitable here. The trouble with this shop is that, although everything is cute and almost perfect as a gift, it means that you begin to recognise where your own presents have come from. I love their selection of cards and bath goodies. The rest of the shop is full to the brim with fail-safe gift options such as mugs, diaries, fairy lights, ornaments and candles. Being very gift-like and fail-safe, the owner has picked up on this and this unfortunately means that the items are slightly over-priced. Expect to pay a little extra but content in the knowledge that your gift will be perfect.

You can pick up ready-made bouquets for about £20 or ask for something unique for any price. So if your friend hates roses and loves the colour yellow, then they can do a yellow rose-free bunch in a few minutes. I have bought flowers from here for gardeners and they have been impressed, which kinda says it all. Staff are really friendly and listen to what you are trying to explain, most importantly really excited about making something for you that works. They also deliver locally but, trust me, if you're a man walking down the street with flowers you will get a smile from all the ladies!

It is her knowledge and dedication to the industry that really shines through in this wild pink and green floral bouquet of a store. This isn't a run-off-the-mill florist offering baskets of pre picked flowers and plants fit for a student's bedroom. On the contrary it is something very unique and different; a shop where specific types of flower are bought in and sold similarly specific. Bunches and bouquets can be arranged for any occasion from a christening, to a wedding, to a wake. Even if you're not sure what flowers would be best for what occasion, rest assured Tilly Tomlinson and her more than able staff will be happy to assist. A colourful, happy shop built with love and smelling oh so beautiful.

Her bouquets are modern and delicate, or you can just buy a few stems of things to take home and arrange yourself.

Such incredibly personal service as well, the kind of service you can only get from a company like this. They will even use ostrich plumage in your flower display for that 'I'm definitely not a cheapskate' look. No, seriously they will make you something really special here. They have just added a whole range of fruit and vegetable plants to their stall, things like strawberries, tomatoes, courgettes, leaks and lettuces and if I had the faintest idea how to grow any of those things I would give it a go (I don't have a garden, probably an issue?). They have also got a great range of potted plants for granny or auntie and if you do what the marketing campaigns tell you and buy flowers for yourself, rather than wait for men like me to do something wrong, treat yourself to some from this stall.

With card shops and coffee shop chains either side it's a relief to have something natural and unbranded being sold. Also very convenient for apologies, forgotten birthdays, and trying to divert attention away from dirty carpets. You can pay 20 plus for a bunch if you like (and you'll certainly get some nice flowers for that) but you certainly don't have too. I picked up some crocuses for one pound forty and there's plenty of other cheap options. Lloyds offers a wide variety of flowers and plants great for any occasion, from plant pots for Mothers Day to beautiful bouquets for Valentine's Day. I went there recently to buy a 'congratulations' bouquet for my friend who had just got a new job. The woman who served me was really helpful; my friend is exceptionally girly and I wasn't sure what I wanted as I know nothing about flowers. I simply told her my budget, the reason for the bouquet and they type of girl my friend was and she prepared a fantastic bouquet with pink roses, pink freesias and lots more. Most impressively the ends of the flowers were trimmed in the store and I was given some flower feed to keep the flowers healthy and along with the message card I was also given an advice card to help maintain the bouquet. The flowers were wrapped up to form a gorgeous bouquet and a beautiful present. Lloyds is a lovely florist that offers the personal touch.

This is a florist unlike any other I have been in before…read more Perhaps it is because it is more like a shop in the conventional sense; insulated and warm as opposed to the sort of garden centre feel a lot of other florists have. Perhaps it is the homely and welcoming interior, with its framed photographs or antique chairs. I assume it is a combination of all these points and the ensuing and absolutely incredible scent from the flowers, unable to circulate but instead sitting like some beautifully soft quilt. Bunches of missed anniversaries and apologies sit outside in colourful metal bins alongside larger bouquets of a graduation or christening. It is the floral organising of big occasions such as weddings and funerals however, that really set Les Fleurs apart from the rest. If someone has their own garden, for instance, Les Fleurs can arrange to pick and prepare on site. It's a very professional but personal service where I really get the feel they're in control of things. For any query you have I suggest you give them a ring or, if possible, pop in - if only for the aforementioned quilt-like experience.
