Ciro, the proprietor, is kind, friendly and honest, a rare find in the historic center (centro…read morestorico) of Naples. His store does not have a lot, but a little of everything, including wine, beer, water, milk, cookies, laundry products and a nice deli with a choice of Italian cold cuts (salame, prosciutto, mortadella, provolone, mozzarella, etc.). His prices are very fair considering the size of the place and he is extremely honest. I found out that he lives in the palazzo across the street where I am staying, so he serves the neighborhood, seeming to know everybody that passes, even yelling, a Neapolitan tradition, across the street to a neighbor who was about to receive a delivery from his store. If staying in the area or in need of some groceries, water, a sandwich, or a snack, walk up the hill from Via Toledo (near Toledo station) and say "ciao" to Ciro. Supero is a local supermarket chain in the Naples area, with about a dozen locations in small…read morefootprint stores serving the urban center and a few stores further out into the suburbs. This location is fairly non-descript from the exterior, if you didn't see the supermarket sign you probably wouldn't know it was there. Blinds cover the front windows from the bright sun outside. Walking in, there are about 7-8 aisles of products, including everything you'd find in a larger store: a fresh produce section, cheese, and charcuterie, dairy, meat and fish, refrigerated food, canned, dried and preserved items, beverages and alcoholic drinks, snacks, cookies and candy, a frozen section, pet supplies, a small home goods area. The produce, cheese/charcuterie/olives and meat sections looked fresh and welcoming. It's rare that you see such smaller stores with such breadth of products in the US, so I was impressed as a foreign tourist--they probably had twenty different types of chocolate hazelnut spread! I bought some chocolate, pasta and cookies for souvenirs and check out was at one of two (or three?) registers at the front. Not much interaction with the staff working though checkout was quick and the store was neat and clean!
