The location is a bit further from central Bologna, about a 15-20 minute drive or bus ride from the city center. Nestled in a mostly residential neighborhood in what looks to be a more diverse ethnic part of town--I saw some Asian and African-owned businesses nearby--it's easy to hop onto bus #25 or hail an Uber (~€20-25) to the city center. The bus headed towards town stops right opposite the street from the hotel and comes about once every 10-15 minutes during the day. Walking into the hotel there's a simple reception counter. On the left are some lounge seats, a car frame attached vertically to the wall--YES I said CAR (see pic!)--for unique decor, a small stocked bar and bar seating area. While I didn't try anything there I saw a handful of people order drinks on a couple nights. The staff that I interacted with was very helpful, check-in was very easy, they were able to call a cab, provide basic information about what happens during a transportation strike, and give recommendations on things to do around the city. The room was superb, the bed was two queens (like American queen size beds, not the full size ones they call queen in some European hotels) pushed together to form essentially a California King. I could sleep horizontally and still have plenty of room! And the beds were comfortable too. Room was spotless, the turn down service was meticulous, bathroom was spacious and new, with rainforest shower. Great water pressure and hot water, clean white towels and plenty of them. Mini sink and bidet in the toilet room. There's a smaller flatscreen tv but it's off to the left side of the room above the desk, so if you're sleeping on the far right side that may require some craning of your neck, though I hope most people visiting Bologna aren't there to watch tv, and I personally didn't have an issue with this. The room was split in two one side with bunk beds and the other with the master bed. Mini fridge, instant coffee, safe, desk and chair were available. There was also a small "walk-in" closet right next to the door with a built in shelf for luggage. Only small gripe was there wasn't AC (note below) available on April, and there were a couple pretty warm days where I had to open the bathroom window and balcony door to let the air circulate. Special shout out to their cleaning staff bc I forgot some cash in the room (not the room tip) when I left and they actually contacted me to let me know they found it and would hold it for my friend to pick it up. They leave welcome cookies under a cloche on the desk, which was a nice touch. Also who doesn't like free cookies? Even though it's a bit further from the central attractions I would certainly stay here again! *Be forewarned during months where the average temperature is below a certain threshold, they aren't able to turn on the AC in the hotel. They explained that it's due to local legislation for environmental energy usage concerns.

It's about a 20 minute level walk to and from the train station (though a bus goes up the main road if you'd prefer and you can get a taxi right outside the hotel if you want too. We had a suite which was smaller than I had hoped it would be, but was really nicely appointed with a view of the clock tower directly across from the window and the main square to the right. And it was in fact two rooms so we could close the door between the bedroom and have the living room for late night writing or email when the other one of us was sleeping. For the most part it was a quiet room though there were films showing in the main square every night we were there and the sound could be heard until about midnight in our room which wasn't ideal but that was also about when we were going to sleep so it worked out. Breakfast was great and our favorite hotel breakfast in Italy. They brought a basket of gluten free items for my wife and the subsequent days we were there they remembered us and automatically brought the gluten free basket and remembered our coffee order as well. Felt like very personal service. The staff was really nice too and gave us good restaurant recommendations. We would definitely stay here again.

We only planned our trip to allow a one night stay in Modena, but, after staying here and seeing…read morethe town, we wished we had stayed much longer. The room was large and included a kitchenette. They brought a lovely breakfast tray to our room, but we never figured out how to work the coffee maker. There were two huge windows and the room's temperature was very comfortable. The city itself is lovely and virtually tourist free compared to Rome and Florence. The food is fantastic, and there aren't the typical tourist traps. I'd highly recommend coming, even if you aren't able to get into Osteria Francescana. The only downside was that the staff doesn't speak much English and we didn't speak much Italian. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Local ion is great, in the center of this wonderful city, and close to Osteria Francescana, if that's where you are heading (which we recommend)! Breakfast is served in your room, and it is fresh and tasty, great pastries and savory stuff. This was a highlight for sure! What was not so good, is a minor detail that should be added in the information about the b&b. Check-in time is very strict, since they only have a few rooms they are rarely in the office. Hence, when we arrived at 12 no one was there to open the door, we called them but their English wasn't that good, and our Italian is nonexistent, so we walked around with our luggage in 30 degrees heat. We are used to be able to leave luggage when the room is not ready, but that'd ones not work here. So take the check in time literally and you will be fine! Staff is very helpful, after we tried to reach them, an English speaking person called us and let us in. So it all worked out fine. This would never make me not stay here again, we truly loved it's! But we think people should know this, so it does not happen to any one else.

Overall, I would recommend the hotel, as it offers good value for money. The reason I'm taking stars off is that the shower was scalding hot, and playing with the temperature dial didn't manage to make it colder, and also there was mold on the ceiling in the bathroom. However, my friend was luckier with the shower, so maybe it was just my room.

We stayed for 2 nights on a recent trip to the Parma/Reggio/Modena area and the breakdown of our stay here is as follows: Pros: + Free (above ground) parking, with a paid underground parking garage available. Plenty of parking stalls and a safe neighborhood. + Close to a mall, with a big grocery store. Maybe a 5-10 minute walk, or a quick 2 minute drive. + The free breakfast was fresh, and had multiple options for guests. + Staff was helpful and made an effort to make up for minor issues. Cons: - Entering/exiting the hotel is a car accident waiting to happen. it is essentially a blind turn onto a fairly busy road, with your driver's view obstructed by the fence. - Ice machines broken during our stay, and no refrigerator in the rooms. This meant that we had to leave anything we needed refrigerated at the front desk. - The shower water temperatures fluctuated during the shower. Sometimes too cold, then it got scalding hot.

It's also about 5 or 6 minutes' walking distance to the bus station and train station (Bologna Centrale), which is great. As for the room, it was a little modest-looking - all white with very little décor - but that wasn't a major problem. The only thing that bothered me was that the shower holder was about two feet high so you'd have to either sit down in the bath or hold it above yourself to take a shower. Also, the walls were quite thin and we could hear the people next door talking and walking around in their room. However, the room was spotless, beds comfortable, and there was air conditioning, a hair-dryer and WiFi. The breakfast had pretty good variety and fair hours (7:30am to 10am). I also found the staff very nice and accommodating. So in spite of a few shortcomings I think it was great value for money and I would absolutely recommend this place to anybody who's thinking about visiting Bologna.

The best part of the experience was the very helpful and friendly staff both at the front desk and persons attending to breakfast in the mornings. And the location can't be beat.

After a long travel day, the room was very comfortable and the staff was helpful. The room and bathroom were spacious and clean. Amenities included comfortable linens, small toiletries, and plush robes. The only downside we noticed in the room was a lack of USB outlets. This made plugging in our devices a bit tricker, so make sure you don't forget your adapters if traveling from the UK or US. The breakfast can be added to your room for €15 per person, which we found worth it for the variety of items provided! Breakfast includes a selection of breads and pastries, yogurt, potatoes, eggs, sausage, and charcuterie.

I know that my rating is mid-range, but that's because we found this hotel to be rather sterile and lacking personality. Coming from our hotel in Florence (see separate review of the Palazzo Castri), this was a very different experience. The staff was efficient, but they lacked any personal sincerity. I felt the same way about the hotel itself. It seemed sterile in the same way you would find a higher end hotel in the US. The lobby, as well as the room, had all the right elements, but also was lacking in personality. All of this might have earned this hotel a higher rating except that it was quite expensive and didn't really seem to offer anything unique. My experience at their restaurant (Avorio) was also lackluster (see separate review). I suspect that Bologna has other places to stay that offer more personality at a considerably lower cost.
