When I first saw the location and the level of detail that was spent on the ambience and interior, I feared that the service would be posh and uncomfortable and the food/drink disappointing.
For drinks we had the skull rabbit and the hibiscus margarita. Both drinks were perfectly made, 10/10. The hibiscus margarita was thoughtfully designed such that as you bring the drink to your mouth, you inhale the sweet scent of the fresh basil in the drink. I would come back for the drinks alone. They are around $16 USD each.
The amuse bouche was chips and an assortment of 6 salsas and a sizable amount of bean dip. The salsas were each well made and the bean dip was also great!
We ordered the mushroom risotto to share and was thoroughly disappointed as the lack of taste. This almost tanked our experience as we had such high hopes after the drinks and salsas and were met with a very poor risotto. What was interesting was that when I asked for salt, the server provided a sampler of 4 different types of salt (truffle salt, Himalayan, a smoky European salt, and some native Mexican salt). This was an interesting experience. $17 USD
At this point I want to bring up the service. From beginning to end, the service was great. The hostess, the maitre'd, and of course our server Victor. Victor had excellent recommendations for drinks and dessert that we really enjoyed. When we said we would share an entree (and one of the cheapest ones at that) and when I mentioned I wanted to take home quite a small portion of remaining dessert, Victor did not make me feel out of place or unfitting of the classy establishment. Finally, I think the most telling was Victor's attention to detail. I am not quite sure how, but Victor knew that the risotto was not to our expectations (maybe it was the request for salt?) and made it right without our asking at all. This type of service and attention to detail is something that I have not seen in many other places.
Finally, as a result of Victor's acknowledgement of our missed expectations, we decided to give dessert a try when we were previously considering not to. We ordered the tiramisu lava cake and the reveal was fun and the taste/texture was great. It wasn't too rich, but was super moist, almost like a mix of tres leches and a tiramisu. The portion was generous. $12 USD
To conclude, the ambience/interior was really cool (wish music was just a little quieter), the drinks were amazing (though I wish we could see the table side preparation), the dessert was delicious and generous portions, but the risotto was a miss for us (maybe it's our fault for ordering risotto at an establishment known for meats?). The service was top notch.
I would definitely return for drinks and the service. Thank you Victor! read more
