This is possibly the best dinner experience in Playa del Carmen, the ambience is unique and hip. The food is creative and fun with very attentive service. Every time we travel to Playa we have dinner at Sonora Prime

Molten tiramisu, delicious, not too rich, generous portion, good presentation

When I first saw the location and the level of detail that was spent on the ambience and interior, I feared that the service would be posh and uncomfortable and the food/drink disappointing. For drinks we had the skull rabbit and the hibiscus margarita. Both drinks were perfectly made, 10/10. The hibiscus margarita was thoughtfully designed such that as you bring the drink to your mouth, you inhale the sweet scent of the fresh basil in the drink. I would come back for the drinks alone. They are around $16 USD each. The amuse bouche was chips and an assortment of 6 salsas and a sizable amount of bean dip. The salsas were each well made and the bean dip was also great! We ordered the mushroom risotto to share and was thoroughly disappointed as the lack of taste. This almost tanked our experience as we had such high hopes after the drinks and salsas and were met with a very poor risotto. What was interesting was that when I asked for salt, the server provided a sampler of 4 different types of salt (truffle salt, Himalayan, a smoky European salt, and some native Mexican salt). This was an interesting experience. $17 USD At this point I want to bring up the service. From beginning to end, the service was great. The hostess, the maitre'd, and of course our server Victor. Victor had excellent recommendations for drinks and dessert that we really enjoyed. When we said we would share an entree (and one of the cheapest ones at that) and when I mentioned I wanted to take home quite a small portion of remaining dessert, Victor did not make me feel out of place or unfitting of the classy establishment. Finally, I think the most telling was Victor's attention to detail. I am not quite sure how, but Victor knew that the risotto was not to our expectations (maybe it was the request for salt?) and made it right without our asking at all. This type of service and attention to detail is something that I have not seen in many other places. Finally, as a result of Victor's acknowledgement of our missed expectations, we decided to give dessert a try when we were previously considering not to. We ordered the tiramisu lava cake and the reveal was fun and the taste/texture was great. It wasn't too rich, but was super moist, almost like a mix of tres leches and a tiramisu. The portion was generous. $12 USD To conclude, the ambience/interior was really cool (wish music was just a little quieter), the drinks were amazing (though I wish we could see the table side preparation), the dessert was delicious and generous portions, but the risotto was a miss for us (maybe it's our fault for ordering risotto at an establishment known for meats?). The service was top notch. I would definitely return for drinks and the service. Thank you Victor!

Overall we had a great time at Sonora Prime. It was really pouring when we got there and we had no umbrellas. Then we had to go up a flight of stairs. ‍. Hay Dios Mio! We ordered several drinks, most of which were mine lol. Classic martini, whiskey sour, pina colada and mojito. Excellent drinks! The complimentary chips and salsa were good too. We ordered 1 tomahawk (super well done) and 1 tomahawk (medium). Both tomahawks were cooked to perfection and tender! Excellent! For sides, we ordered truffle fries, mushrooms, corn and beets. All were excellent! Service we received was exceptional! Unfortunately none of the managers ever asked us how our experience was. But of course that's not a must but it would have been a good gesture. Would we go back? Absolutely! Can't wait for our next trip to PDC!

We ordered a bottle of red wine since we're eating steak. The wine was robust I ordered the T-bone steak and Pooh ordered the Fillet Mignon. Both of us asked for medium rare but both were more rare than medium. Still the steak melted in my mouth. Our server, Damian was great. He brought out a tray with the different cuts of steaks to show us what each looked like (see photo). He did the same for the desserts (see photo) I ordered the Lime Charlotte and Pooh chocolate mousse. I had no idea what a Charlotte was but it was amazing. It was like a key lime pie without the crust but layers of cake with chunks of lime curd throughout-sublime truly Pooh loved his mousse. The taste and texture was velvety and he enjoyed the extra crunch of the chocolate chips. A wonderful supper. No complaints!!!

I ordered the ribeye steak with the Alfredo pasta. The steak was cooked perfectly and the Alfredo was very creamy and rich. My wife had the malinaesa and the chicken had the perfect crunch to the outside and tender on the inside. The flavored were also great and it was served over angle hair pasta. Very good overall experience and the staff was very friendly and service was great. A great spot for dinner when in playa.

The seating on the 2nd floor overlooking the shopping area is the best for people watching. We started with table side guacamole and it was good. We asked the preparer to add a little more spice to heat it up and it was added flavor. The main meals were very good and the menu has many options. My wife ordered a mango margarita and it was great. We enjoyed our lunch here and we will be back on our next visit to Playa Del Carmen.

The location is fabulous. it is on the main strip on 5th Ave but on the second floor overlooking the hustle and bustle below. You get a great view with a romantic, peaceful atmosphere. The décor has a tropical vibe with lots of plants. The hostess, server and manager were all super nice and helped us choose the best items on the diverse menu. We started with some ceviche and stuffed jalapenos. Both were delicious. I order a glass of Malbec from Argentina- happy they had a decent wine selection as many places in Mexico only have good beer or tequila. For my entrée, I had bacon wrapped tiger shrimp on a bed of mashed potatoes. Yum!! Daniel had a lobster pasta dish and it was quite good too though I think we both preferred mine. The price was very reasonable - for 2 apps, 2 entrees and 2 glasses of wine it was $77 USD before tip. It would be nearly impossible to have that much for that price at a fine dining place here. Thanks for a lovely experience, Madre Tierra!
