Horribly run restaurant- 8 tables open , no sense of urgency or even friendliness...over heard one waitress say "I refuse to bus tables" as she rolled her eyes at us...finally got seated, gave us "insert" menus....then left us there...forever... So we walked out- manager looked at me and said "have a nice day"- so I told him what happened- his response was "who said that??"- my response was "I cannot remember, but you have an issue" It was a shame, because I ate here before, and it was good -waitresses AND managers who do not bus tables -dirty dinning room (makes you wonder what the kitchen looks like) -unfriendly Whoever runs this location has a true issue at the top I do not like to leave negative reviews (I am thinking this May be my first on Yelp) but someone has to say something I hope the people who run this place read this, and take it to heart- good people are not hard to find when they are led well read more

My husband and I have been avid Sonny's customers for decades and have enjoyed their awesome smokey barbecue chicken, ribs and pulled pork. However, when we dined at this Ocala location over the weekend, we encountered our first disappointment with this chain. First let me say that the pulled pork platter I ordered was okay. The pulled pork was tender and already sweet so it didn't need any of the assorted sauces that were on the table. My husband had a taste of it and said that it was cold. (Although it was not piping hot, I didn't think it was cold..) The sides of cole slaw and garlic bread were adequate. The baked beans, however, tasted like they had been sitting around for a while. The main problem was with the bbq chicken that my husband ordered. Normally when we order chicken at a Sonny's restaurant, it comes out dark, smokey and fully cooked to the bone. At this location, the chicken was barely a golden color and when my husband cut into it, it was blood red near the bone. It also didn't have that wonderful smokey flavor that one usually associates with Sonny's. It almost tasted like it was baked in an oven. Our server told us that it was red because it was smoked. We didn't buy that for a minute but she had such a pleasant tableside manner that we just gave her a pass on the issue. Oddly enough, we overheard a customer behind us tell our waitress that she also had to send a dish back on a previous visit because it was not done enough to her liking. That should have given us a clue. I have contacted Sonny's and made them aware of our experience in the hopes that the kitchen will improve. As for the service, it was flawless. Sonny's used to be my favorite but now there are other competitors who are by far BBQing much tastier foods. It seems that Sonny's food is just blah now and prices are ridiculous for the portion sizes especially on the sides. When you order a family meal I expect to get more than 1/4- 1/2 pound sides and for goodness sake's fill it up. They expect a family of 4 or 5 to have a tablespoon of Mac n cheese. When you add more people to a family meal and they then charge double also add double they don't. Called and spoke to the manager regarding the issue he fixed it but I was still not impressed. Meh. My server was friendly but never introduced himself...and didn't check back later (see below)... The Redneck egg rolls were pretty decent, albeit a bit greasy. Flavor was good. The sandwich was definitely not what I expected. I was given the option of chopped or sliced brisket, so I opted for sliced, & I chose the garlic bread over whatever the other type was. What I received were 3 big chunks of meat on the stale-ish bread, which I then proceeded to eat in pieces rather than sandwich bites. The meat wanted to pull apart the way a brisket should, but since these were chunks instead of slices, it was an awkward pull with big cells of meat kinda hanging on to not be pulled apart. Server also never asked me how the food was, or he would have seen the pieces broken apart on my "plate." Then again, maybe he wouldn't have bothered to look, since he hadn't seemed to notice during the dozen times he walked by me. The meat did have a smoky flavor, but not a noticeable smoke ring. Just slightly pink. I also left a big piece of it untouched because it was just too fatty. Ahhhh, it wanted to be bbq. Maybe even actually tried. And this is a chain... but I won't be rushing back to Sonny's when I'm in the area again. read more

Sonny's had been my go to BBQ restaurant since the 1980's. They are constantly evolving. We went to eat here this past Sunday for dinner. The place was pretty empty, which is surprising. We were seated right away and the waitress took our drink order. I ordered the sweet and Smoky ribs, baked beans, corn bread and coleslaw. The coleslaw is new and pretty good, not too wet. The baked beans were good and tastey but on the soupy side and the serving size are definitely smaller. The ribs were over cooked and pretty hard to eat. The corn bread was warm and tasted very good. My wife got the dry rub ribs and they were great. Very meaty and cooked just right. I noticed that broccoli is off the menu, which was disappointing. I'm a fan, but they need to tweak a few things to get back to the great place they can be. read more

Terrible service!! We ordered through the drive-thru and they didnt take our order correctly. When we got to the window they told us this and we had to pay more for the rack of ribs we actually wanted. We paid the difference for the correct type of ribs we wanted and a few minutes later they gave us our order. We live about 30mins away and when we got home we realized they had given us shredded chicken and green beans. They did a terrible job taking the order, then packing it and whoever checks the order before delivering it to us. My friends and I went for dinner last evening. We were greeted at the door by a young woman who was obviously having a bad day. The restaurant was not at all busy and after she showed us to a table we simply told her that we would prefer a booth. After a grimace and a "I'll have to go see what booth to seat you" she returned and seated us in a booth. (There were between 10 and 12 empty booths at the time). To get right to the point, the service did not improve after our initial greeting. We ordered appetizers, salad bar, and various meat dinners. The food was good however our table was covered with all of the food we ordered. We would have liked to enjoy our appetizers separate from our dinners but that was not the case. When we pointed it out to the waitress, instead of taking the main course meal back to the kitchen so we could enjoy our appetizers, she said.....and I quote...."well we aren't busy so the cook doesn't have anything else to do". The 3 stars is for the food but it truly is a gift as the service was so terrible it should be 1 star. We've eaten here several times, mainly because it is very close to home, and this is what we have experienced: 1. The barbecue sauces, 4 of them ranging from sweet to hot) are the BEST barbecue sauces in the area. We've never been disappointed by Sonny's barbecue sauces. 2. French fries are consistently served COLD. When we complain, the waitress will bring us freshly cooked, hot fries. But they need to get it right the first time. 3. The appetizers are good but they ALWAYS serve the dinner within one minute of serving the appetizers. This deprives us of a chance to enjoy our appetizers. 4. Their Brunswick Stew is ALWAYS excellent. 5. Their side dishes, especially the Baked Beans, are good. We used to go to this Sonny's about 2-3 times per month, but after getting tired of cold French Fries and their messing up our appetizers, we only eat here maybe four times per year. If Sonny could correct the cold French Fries and appetizers situations, we would eat here more often. read more

When pick up there was no contact with employees they simply place your food in your car trunk. The employees were all wearing gloves and mask. Called ahead as we had a party of 12 and I wanted to make sure they could accommodate us. I was told they don't take reservations. Charlotte said but we are ready for you come on over. 10 of us arrived together and we were seated right away. Our waitress, Sam, was AMAZING!!! seriously if her boss sees this they should know she was phenomenal. She caught our last 2 on their way in and as they were sitting down she was placing their drinks in front of them. Never once did a cup go empty. Our appetizers were served accommodating our obvious idea to share them. Enough time was given between the appetizers and entree's to enjoy our appetizers. We drove all the way from Arizona for a family gathering. We were excited because Sonny's has always been one of our favorite places to eat. We were driving passed and specifically stopped when we saw the sign on I-75. We decided then that's where we would enjoy our dinner. Much to our surprise we were highly upset and extremely disappointed. They told us there would be a wait for a booth so they sat us at a table, mind you I have a rambunctious 6year old boy so it was already turning into a nightmare. Then as we waited the roof started to leak on us and then we saw them seat the next people immediately in a booth. The waitress didn't introduce herself was rude and didn't even try. Immediately she started off with what do you want to drink, not even a hello my name is such and such. Then she got set up with an 8 top and was extremely friendly to them joking alongside of them.
