What happened to this place? I was having a conversation with someone a while back about how I missed Sonny's BBQ and they were in many states and it was the best BBQ around and now only in the Concord Charlotte area. I decided to stop by Sonny's before headed back to Durham. Sonny's BBQ is not what I remembered when I was younger. As soon as you would walk in you were overwhelmed with the smell of pit-cooked BBQ, the restaurant was filled with unique decorations, and had lots of Nascar related items at this location. Not anymore. Now looks like your traditional bland casual fair restaurant, like Applebee's or Chilis. Guess they sold out to corporate. No pit BBQ smell either. Now the food, I got the chopped BBQ. Looked like Kibbles N Bits dog food. they chopped it in little round pieces. It was all you could eat on Wednesday, but I ordered one serving and I was done, not that good. It seemed like before it was all you could eat of all their meats, bbq, bbq chicken, ribs, turkey. Too bad Sonny's BBQ lost its way. read more

I ordered the Sampler: Ribs (ok, but flavorless and a little dry), 1/4 Chicken (too dry to enjoy & also flavorless), pulled pork (I almost gagged- half fat and half over-cooked, poorly seasoned butt), Brisket (nice smoke, decent flavor, just a little dry and crumbly). North Carolina is known for it's BBQ, but I think Sonny's is the best. They are very consistent. They have great BBQ Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Chicken. Their sides are also great. My personal favorite are the homemade baked beans, and the garlic bread. They also have multiple sauces at your table for you to try. My favorites are Sweet, and Sizzlin Sweet. Give them a try. I have been going to different Sonny's locations for over 40 years. Their quality is very consistent. This Concord location is clean, with a friendly staff, and excellent food. Stopped by for lunch on the way to the aquarium with the kids. The waitress was great and was patient with my kids and answered all out questions about the menu. I settled on the Pitmaster Burger. Talk about meat on meat on meat on meat. This thing had a burger patty (not a bad one) topped with bacon, sausage and bbq pork with some kinda cheese and french fried onions. My inner fat girl was in heaven! Ordered the baked sweet potato and was a little sad that the cinnamon butter that comes with it was prepackaged country crock spread. Oh well. An old favorite of mine and of the friend I had lunch with. We had a late lunch, around 2PM. We both ordered the chopped brisket sandwich. We have eaten it there several times and it is our favorite. SOOOO disappointed... The meat was dry on both sandwiches and tasted a little off. I suspect it was sliced and left over from the lunch rush. They just chopped it up and served it. This is my favorite barbecue place in all of Charlotte. I've never dined in before but have ordered this through UberEats countless of times when I need a barbecue craving wolves but just don't want to get out my room. The barbecue is just PHENOMENAL, along with their sides, it's just really tough to beat. Their cornbread is the right consistency of fluffy that I could just eat hella of it in one sitting. Their potato salad is always good but I've only had better at my husband's cookouts when they decide to pull out the homemade batch. Went through the drive thru with hubby for an early lunch. I got the Sweet Carolina and he got the Whole Hog with tater tots. I didn't realize my sandwich already came with Cole slaw inside it, but the extra side of nice and crunchy slaw was very welcomed. The food here is always top quality! They have one of the best salad bars with the freshest ingredients. Their Ice-T is the best EVER!!!! The waitstaff is very pleasant and kind as well it's very attentive. The only drawback I saw was one of the bathroom stalls really needs attention! When I am at this location, I frequent the drive thru. They are always fast and friendly. I ordered the pulled pork, baked potato and a sweet potato. All of the items were hot and fresh. The pulled pork was moist and the sweet BBQ topped it off. This location is always clean. If you go inside, the all you can eat salad bar is well worth a try. read more

Sonny's has lost is way...I can remember coming here when I was younger and it was good. Too bad it was only good in my memories. I ordered the chicken and baked beans. The chicken was so tough it didn't want to come off the bone. It was like a tough membrane on the chicken leg that didn't want to come off. Needless to say it wasn't edible. I exchanged it for some sliced smoked turkey. It was reminiscent of thick sliced deli meat...sigh. Thankfully the garlic bread didn't disappoint, but seriously you can't mess that up. I don't know why people are hating on Sonny's. Don't go into it expecting a super classy meal or anything high end. I think of Sonny's as the TGIFridays or Applebees of BBQ, meaning that it's consistent, tasty, and suited for every palate. But that doesn't mean it's horrible. My typical order is the pulled pork sandwich on Texas toast. It's delicious slathered in their sweet sauce. Visited the drive thru to place an order for the Chopped Brisket combo. I ordered broccoli as my side. I requested the brisket well done and I noticed the young lady taking my order ignored me on that. No worries, I figured I would just inquire at the window as to if she heard me. When I did inquire, the young lady spoke in a condescending tone and told me that the food 'should' be well done but it might be slightly pink due to it being smoked. She then asked what type of sauce I wanted and since I have not had Sonny's since at least 2003, I asked if she could tell me the offering. Again, in a condescending tone she called out the sauces and at this point, even my daughter and husband where asking why did she seem to have an attitude. I ordered the sweet sauce and waited to be served my food. While waiting, I observed the other two young ladies in the kitchen area looking at me. I figured that my cashier must have said something about me asking so many questions or something. Oh well. The food was mediocre. The sandwich was toasted very well and seemed very buttery (low-carbing so my husband ate the Texas toast). My broccoli was horrible. I now see that they were closing when we came so that has to explain why the broccoli tasted like last year's prison broccoli. The brisket was very good and tender. I did not need the sauce at all. Overall, I was hoping for a better experience and after spending $12 and receiving mediocre tasting food and unfriendly customer service; I definitely left disappointed. read more

I drove an hour to get here as I visit a different bbq restaurant every month and I am running out of places near my home. This place is near the Concord Mills shopping area and it is a busy area. I wanted ribs and brisket, but that combo is not on the menu. The server said they don't offer that. I was really kind of in shock that I could not order this meal. After talking to her for a minute, she finally did say that I could order a rib plate and get a side of brisket. We took kind of a roundabout route to get there, but I did get what I wanted. The ribs were phenomenal, some of the best I have ever had. They were tender with a little bite remaining with a great smoky flavor. The brisket was a little different. It was tender with decent flavor. But it had almost all of the fat trimmed away and there was no sign of a smoke ring. The fries and garlic bread were ok, but the cole slaw was also one of the best I ever had, with a good sweetness and the right amount of moisture. People don't go to a bbq restaurant for cole slaw, but it was that good. read more

This place is not anything extraordinary. It's right next to Great Wolf lodge, so we thought we'd give it a try. Service was mediocre and food average.
