This Freilichtmuseum situate in the Gutach valley is designed to give you a glimpse into life in the Black Forest during the late Middle Ages. The collection of local houses and other structures is an interesting window into earlier times. The tour that we took was informative in helping us understand the life of ordinary people then. One unpleasant aspect was the amount of cheap tourist shops surrounding the museum. There wasn't much authentic about this consumerist aspect. I will say though that this type of museum is not for everyone. If you're of school age or just love history, this is a great place to spend an hour or two. If not, it would probably be more interesting to spend your day somewhere else in this gorgeous region.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon, so there was minimal staff working with the glass, but enough to get the idea of how they operate. The showrooms are spectacular with a huge selection of Christmas ornaments, some art glass, some kitchenware, and some drinking glasses. For 18 euros, you could blow your own vase with assistance from the glass masters. Free parking, 6 euros admission with less for seniors, a small attached cafe for a coffee or bier after your visit to the production shop.

If the etching and polishing shop is open, walk through, you will see true artists at work and the beautiful objects they created. If you need Holiday ornaments or heirloom glasses and similar items, you can find them here. I picked up gorgeous handmade glass snails with shells that change colors, each one of a kind. They were small enough and sturdy enough for air travel, yet made for a unique gift or memento. We did not eat in the restaurant, so I can't comment on it, but it looked very nice with its local inspired decor.
