I took a hour drive from SF to the city of Tracy for a business-planning. And what I saw on my way to Tracy is the West Valley Mall and on the side of the mall is Sonic's drive-in After our meeting in Tracy, we landed here for a quick bite. This restaurant is presumably a fast-food joint. I thought, why not? It was crowded on a Sunday midday, and I ordered Sonic's signature burger meal, the Sonic's double-burger with fries and soda. It is a similiar burger to the Double-Double Cheeseburger at In & Out, but you can add Chili,cheese, and bacon at an extra cost. And,would you guess, I got all the options in my Double-burger. It was delicious. My co-league ordered the Bacon-cheeseburger Toaster sandwich, Onion Rings and Strawberry-limeade drink. Her sandwich was a disappointment,because the Texas bread was thick and the patty was thin. But the Onion-ring was crunchy and spiced well,and the Strawberry limeade was refreshing and blended well together. I enjoyed my first-time in Sonic's,but I hate the drive to Tracy. Uhhhhhhh I have been waiting MONTHS to try sonics. I see all these commercials on TV and hear it nonstop on the radio so I ultimately came to the decision that it has to be somewhat good! Now I live in Milpitas. I can either A) go to the one in Gilroy or B) go to the one in Tracey. Yes, I know Gilroy is closer but driving the 101s is horrid at times. My friends and I were coming back from Reno and decided to take the 5 to 580 back so we can swing by sonics on the way home. SO disappointed!!! I had the California Cheese Burger which is just a cheeseburger with thousand island dressing on it with a strawberry limeaid.The burger was bleh but the strawberry limeaid was actually pretty good. P.s. if you have never been to sonics BUT you have seen the commercials, you would think that the people in the car (in the commercials) are sitting in the drive through. I sure thought this. Sorry, I like burgers, I don't mind drive-ins... but this place is setup horribly. For the Sonic virgins... you pull-up to your personal drive-in booth. Squint to read the menu; the four of us just got out of the car so we could figure out what we wanted. Next, press the red button and hope that you get a response. We did this four times, before flagging down an employee who said to wait. We get in our order, somene slots in their cc and we pay the person back in cash. Supposedly Sonic has roller skaters serve you, well, I guess this has passed in time because all I see are waitresses on foot... oh wait... ok, one waitress is on rollerblades. Our order comes out on foot, we had decided to eat it at the bench as opposed to wearing our meal later, so we asked the waitress to bring it over to the table and we walked to meet her there. Oh... now we see that we could have placed the order near the picnic tables too. duh! The meal was lack luster... I had a #5, which was a burger on thick toast, tots, and a soda. " Where's The Beef?!? " We needed extra napkins and ketchup...well, in any other burger place you'd walk over to get those yourselves.... not here... they lock you out like it was Fort Knox.... even the bathroom, which you enter from the back like it was a gas station, where an employee greets you to let you in under key. OK, so if you want napkins/ketchup, flagg down a waitress and they'll be more than happy to bring them over. .... ohh... here comes a waitress 10min later with a tray full of ketchup, mustard, pepper, napkins going from car to car... too late, my burger's already eaten... A 1 hour drive from San Fransisco, was worth the wait! Living in San Fransisco and being taunted by Sonic Burger commericals, we just had to go to Sonic Burger! Although we didn't know how to order our food and we thought there was a place to go inside the restaurant, always being used to McDonalds. I stopped in today to get a quick burger and drink. Haven't been here for some time. Past experiences were not so good, but hey I believe in a second and third try. I ordered a California cheeseburger with ketchup as a combo with a large drink at 3:12 PM. Around 3:34 I noticed customers that had arrived after me had received their orders and either stayed in the drive-up to eat or left with their orders. I'm thinking 22 minutes for a "quick" burger Huh? So I pushed the "Red button" again and asked where my order was. A male voice hesitated and then asked me what I had ordered. Wow, now I haven't moved from my stall since placing the order so I'm confused? You mean you don't know what I ordered? He replies yea I just want to confirm it. So I refresh his memory and he states " your order will be right out". A couple minutes later the car hop arrives with a tray for my meal. 25 minutes after I placed the order. I didn't see any ketchup in the bag and there was none on the burger. As a car hop passes I ask her for some ketchup and she says I'll be right back with it. The food was Luke warm but I'm hungry so I start eating before its ice cold. The burger wasn't bad albeit not hot. Wow there are no napkins in the bag. I see another car hop. How's about some napkins when you bring my ketchup. She says ok I'll be right back. I finish my burger and some of the cold greasy French fries without ketchup. Wipe my face on my sleeve and punch the "red button" again. Female answers, can I take your order? Confused again as I've been parked here for 40-45 minutes waiting and then eating. I'm the guy you were bringing ketchup and napkins to. Oh sorry sir I'll be right there! I told her to disregard my previous request as I had finished my meal. I told her she could keep the ketchup and napkins as I was leaving. Oh by the way mam, your service and memory is terrible, I won't be back. She replies sorry about that. Hence the one star rating. after seeing those damn sonic ads for soooo many years i finally had to make the drive into tracy to get my sonic fix. since i rarely get out that way i thought i might as well go all out! well in all i got the supersonic breakfast burrito, a sonic burger, strawberry-limeade and the banana pudding shake. the food was unfortunately way too good! i don't eat fast food much at all but sonic is worth the trip and the extra pounds. the banana pudding shake was so scrumptious! it reminded me of the nilla wafer banana desert my mom made for me as a kid. i just hope they add this to the regular menu so next time i make the trip into tracy they still have it. well hopefully one of these days they'll add a location much closer. read more

My first experience here was just OK. We did the walk-up thing and sat outside at the picnic table. I remember it taking a while to get our food delivered. The options are slim for vegetarians (but that's par for the course with most fast food places). They don't even have a fish sandwich, though. I returned here by myself recently and did the order-from-your-car thing and waited for them to bring it out. I came here specifically for the Banana Pudding Shake that I saw advertised on TV (how disgusting am I?). I got that and cheese sticks. I was tempting fate that day. The cheese sticks were your typical, tasty, unhealthy cheese sticks and the milkshake was fabulously delish. I normally hate ordering from my car window, but I found the service to be helpful and it was actually rather convenient to just insert my debit card into the machine to pay. The girl who brought my food was very nice. An overall good experience the second time around. I might give the place four stars, but I can only give three to a place where my only options are shakes, fries and cheese sticks. Honorable mention goes to the servers who wear roller skates. I don't understand why Sonic commercials air in the South Bay when the nearest one is in Tracy. Because of these commercials, I have driven from San Jose all the way to Tracy just to satisfy the temptation. Even the congested traffic on the 580 does not intimidate me, nor prevent me from my Sonic cravings. When I go to Sonic, I usually order in 3 rounds. The first round, I start off with the Sonic burger, tater tots with chili and cheese, and a medium coke. For the second round, I order the footlong coney dog, chili cheese fries, and a route 44 cherry famous slushy. After killing that, I would order dessert and food to go for the third round. I usually get the sundae and a couple footlong coney dogs for the road...maybe some popcorn chicken, too! To many people, Sonic is overrated. This was the absolute worst burger I have ever had in my entire life. Terrible experience....only teenagers working their. I asked for the deluxe burger...and it came out 15 min later with cheese and the bun was cold.. Now ok that's fine I'll give you another chance and this time ill make my order very simple. Just a hamburger with mustard and pickles that's it. They come out later again with a burger with cheese and mustard oozing out the sides everywhere. It was disgusting. The buns were cold AGAIN. We went by today at 4:00. It took them 10 minutes to take our order because the call unit turned out to be disconnected. After that we noticed other people placing orders and getting them, but ours was no where in sight. Eventually, we cornered somebody and demanded they either give us our money back or our food. Finally at 4:25, we had our order: 2 drinks and an ice cream. Filling our order should have taken less than a minute. In 25 minutes, we could have gone by Macy's and bought dishes and utensils, visited the grocery for ice cream and sodas, prepared our own meal, and been eating. The girl over the speaker was hard of hearing our order, and had to repeat herself quite a few times. what i don't understand is why can't they put everything on the burger, like a normal burger place. instead you have to tell them mustard, mayo or ketchup. it should just automatically come with it. my mom ordered the bacon cheeseburger, and it only came with mayo, seriously? when we got our food, we couldn't tell who's was who's, there was hardly any lettuce, or tomatoes on my mom's sandwich that it just looked plain. as for our fries, we ordered a small fry and a small tot. well the fries, the box was half empty of fries, they could have put more, but the jipped us. as for the tots, my brother said they were really good. maybe next time they might be good, but as for now, i'll stay away. read more

So if you are heading towards the central valley make it a point to drop by. Unfortunately we don't have a sonic in San jose i am sad to say. There is plenty of parking since is right next to the mall, after you get your sonic fix just hope over to the mall and walk off the calories. Try not to get distracted by the other restaurants around the place cause there are quite a few. In summary the Slush is yummy as well as the burgers and fries :). We stopped at Sonic on our way home from a weekend of camping. It was about 20 of us. We had thee largest order EVER! The employee who served us our food, a very young man, Patrick, was amazing, he showed us great customer service. Sure there were one or two things we were missing in our order, but for as much as we got, that was excellent: it was a soda and a side of tater tots. I drink the watermelon slush until I get a brain and chest freeze and then I stop - wait til it goes away, and then do it all over again. Its a vicious cycle! I would give them 5 stars but the last time we ventured out there we pressed the buttons on the drive in/speaker and no one answered. I made eye contact with the staff that was inside and they still didn't say anything. So we went thru the drive through instead. A bunch of other people were waiting to get their orders taken but they just left they didn't get in line at the drive thru. Came here recently and disappointed in many ways. But happy in many ways too. Slush drinks rock (blue coconut yum). Their burgers rock (has a distinct taste that reminds me of cravable burgers from the Philippines). Tater tots are taterlicious. Their cheese is gross; reminds me of burnt Barbie heads. Their grilled cheese is gross. We're talking about REAL COMFORT foods man! How do you screw up grilled cheese?! Use real cheese, you know, the one that comes out of cows not out of plastic wrappers. Think of a really really bad version of Jack in the Box. That's totally Sonic. My roommates and I would always hit up Sonic after going to the movies in Dublin. So freakin far. Is it worth it? Eh~ Going to Sonic is more about not having to get out of the car (yay to wearing pj's or not showering), ordering from that speaker box menu, sitting underneath car ports next to your neighbors like it is a 1950's drive-in, and of course, bragging to everyone how you went to Sonic. I finally tried Sonic's!! We went there on the way to Sacramento... and decided to stop there again on the way back to the bay - just to try some new stuff! By far, the best drinks from a fast food restaurant! The food was nothing to die for though. On our first trip I had a Sonic Cheeseburger (single patty). I was wondering why all the value menus had double patty sandwiches - but I figured that out after I got my burger. The patty was as thin as a McDonald's cheeseburger patty (the $79 cent ones). The meat to bread ratio was way off - but it was still good! I tried my fiance's fries and they were just okay. What was great was my low-cal diet cherry limeade. Yum!!! There's no place like this around home. We go here late-ish nights (before 12) to get a late night-bite & chill outside. Haven't ordered while in the car, but it's the same thing if you do it where the tables are. Takes a little while because of the lame-ass drive through people (if you order outside), but it's alright if you're with friends & all that. It's fast food and it's different than your normal places like mcdonald's and bk. It's rare that I eat fast food but on my way back from LA, I knew I wanted to get some cherry limeade from Sonic's. It's one of my favorite drinks.. ever! Their dessert and drink menu are pretty extensive. Actually their whole menu offers a lot of different stuff. I like that I don't feel sick after I eat here. I usually get a burger and tater tots. The hot dogs aren't bad either, they're pretty good. If you've never been, I recommend coming here at least once to try it. Oh and if you don't know, it's a drive in. So you can park and order your food from your car and they'll bring it out. If you want you can get out and eat on their patio but that sucks if the weather sucks. read more
