I first learned about Somni Events and saw their work when I was a bridesmaid at one of my friends' weddings. I was so impressed at their smooth execution, but at the time, I wasn't even engaged yet. Little did I know that a couple of weeks after that wedding, my now-husband decided to propose! It wasn't long after that we started thinking about what we wanted for our wedding. Both of us had really busy schedules, so we knew that we couldn't do it all on our own. We were also interested in AAPI-owned wedding companies because our family and most of our guests were Asian, so we wanted a planner who understood both Korean and Chinese wedding traditions. Ended up sending an inquiry to Somni events and Michelle responded the first business day after. We had a pleasant intro call and I initially decided to go with her. At this point in the wedding planning process, my husband and I had already begun looking at venues. After signing with Michelle, we found a venue that we both loved, but unfortunately, Michelle wasn't available for the wedding date, so she recommended her associate Janice. Her rate was lower and she seemed experienced as well, so we were like sure, why not! Fast forward throughout the year - Janice, my husband, and I would have monthly check-ins to review overall wedding progress, go over items, confirm decisions and budgets.. all that fun stuff. Janice was supportive of what we wanted but was also great at steering us towards the right direction in terms of which vendors, amenities, and overall options were the best for us. I'm very glad she convinced us to hire a videographer. I'm also glad we went for real flowers. She handled most of the communication between the venue and vendors, so that took all the stress off our shoulders. Fast forward even more to our wedding day. Several hiccups popped up that Janice was READY for. First, I woke up 45 minutes late and FREAKED OUT because it would have delayed our schedule. After calling Janice, she had already included extra time just in case something happened. Second, one of my bridesmaids broke her heel, and Janice came to the rescue with super glue! Third, I had food in my teeth halfway through the night and didn't bring floss, but Janice did! These were only the things that I noticed, I'm sure there were countless other moments throughout the wedding day when Janice was prepared. At the end of the day, my husband and I had the best time!!! We got so many compliments for how beautiful the wedding was, and honestly walking into the venue that day - and looking back at the photos of it, I was and am still SO impressed at how glamorous it turned out. When all the festivities were finished, Janice and her assistant had already packed/organized all of the wedding items and returned them to us. My partner and i have been together almost 18 years, engaged for 2 of those years. clearly we are the biggest procrastinators ever so we knew we needed professional help. i wasn't sure at first if we should hire a wedding planner but after a few google searches of "how to plan a wedding" and zero searches on my partner's effort it was clear that we needed not just any event planner but Somni! Michelle is an INCREDIBLE wedding planner and her team at Somni did an excellent job planning our wedding from start to finish. We began the wedding planing process in late 2020 with hopes of doing a micro-wedding in 2021. In the midst of the planning process, my mom got sick and I had to fly to Hong Kong to care for her. 4 months before the wedding, we had to pause the planning process due to the uncertainty of my mom's health. Michelle was so, so understanding and patient during one of my life's hardest moments. When I told her about this unforeseen situation, she took initiative and worked directly with all of the vendors to pause the plans without bothering me once as I was navigating the difficult emotions of dealing with a sick parent. After I came back from Hong Kong at the end of 2021 and felt ready to start the wedding process again, Michelle resumed planning with me despite my unscheduled arrival back and her busy schedule. It was a few extra steps for her to get back to the vendors but she did this without any complaint and I ended up finding an awesome new venue for a big 150+ person wedding set in February 2023. Michelle was so amazing throughout the entire process and nailed down the vision for the wedding I had in mind, and with vendors at the price point I was looking for! She so patiently did this two times as I had one vision for the micro-wedding and then tweaked it for the big one. With her expertise, she helped design a table setting that perfectly accommodated what I had in mind (moody jewel tones; not your typical wedding palette). Fast forward to the 2 weeks leading up to the wedding: I had SO many detailed one-off requests as I was feeling nervous and anxious as a bride. Michelle kindly accommodated for all of them and I was able to let all of my worries go because she had them handled! Come the day of the wedding, Michelle and her team really delivered and it allowed for my husband and I to truly relish our wedding day. Not only was she able to seamlessly manage all of the events and outfit changes the day of (tea ceremony, wedding ceremony, cocktail/reception, paebaek ceremony, first dances and everything in between), but she also was there for the little things, such as ensuring I was hydrated, helping my 3 bridesmaids fix some seemingly impossible tasks with my shoes and my gown, communicating with my picky dad and even ensuring my husband and I had some down time to enjoy the moments of the day together. Michelle is very experienced and is prepared for any fires that one would expect on the day of the wedding (which is many). Michelle, Janice and the team truly did an amazing job in not only making my wedding day everything i imagined but also taking loads of stress off during the process and on the wedding day. First off, I didnt realize how difficult it would be planning an event at our venue- Hummingbird Nest Ranch. There was no wedding package, just a list of required vendors (valet, security, bartending), so we ended up having to source and communicate with 13 total outside vendors to make our night come true. It was a mess for me thinking I could do it myself so that's when we sought out Michelle and Somni Events about 9 months ahead of the wedding for planning services. I really could not have done it without them. Their expertise in the industry and experience at my wedding venue showed and saved me a ton of time I would have otherwise spent researching or asking vendors. Michelle and Janice knew exactly what would be needed at our venue (rentals, lighting, kitchen equipment rentals etc) and communicated directly with all our vendors. On the day of the wedding; there was not one moment where I couldn't find Michelle or Janice when i needed them. Looking back at it, I didnt realize how hectic the day was. Im surprised how relaxed i was!! and that's because i knew Janice and Michelle were behind the scenes making sure everything was going according to plan. I could fill the entire Pacific Ocean with compliments for Michelle and the team at Somni Events. Michelle was part of our planning process for nearly 2.5 years (thanks 2020). Despite a long postponement and endless uncertainties, Michelle was always patient, kind, understanding, and optimistic while realistic. We are not local to SoCal and were stuck in another country throughout most of the planning process. Despite the distance, we always felt we could confide and trust Michelle no matter the issue - which is the most important when choosing your vendors. Not only does she have a great eye for design, she is meticulous and detail oriented. She provided all the organization and design resources we needed and truly understood our vision. A huge plus is that she is well attuned to East Asian wedding traditions and can speak to family members who do not understand English. There were so many small details we would have forgotten had it not been for Michelle. Even though our bridal party and family only had brief interactions with Michelle on the wedding day, they all commented and were so impressed by her level of detail and organization, positive attitude, and constant smile. When the weather prediction showed 70% chance of rain on our wedding day the entire week leading up to it, Michelle worked hard even at late hours to ensure we had a backup plan that fit our vision and communicated with our vendors for options. Not only so, she went above and beyond and paid for an hourly weather app just to see if it would stop raining by our ceremony time. By some miracle, the rain cleared the night before. When we needed extra rentals at the last minute, Michelle went out of her way to help us pick them up and also helped receive packages for us since we were out of town. We never expected any vendor to do this for us. We are so grateful for Michelle. These are just a few examples of the numerous times she went above and beyond. Although she juggles many events, Michelle always makes you feel like you are the top priority. She will treat your wedding like her own with the full attention it deserves. She gave us great options for florists, videographers, photographers, hair and makeup artists, etc. Michelle uses a platform to make it easy to upload guest lists, keep track of those who are attending, create table seating with ease, and a timeline for us to make sure we have completed things such as when to get the marriage license and when to order the wedding invitations, as well as when each payment is due for each vendor. She also handles all the contracts for the vendors. On the day of the wedding, Michelle and her staff make sure the wedding ceremony and the event run smoothly. Hiring Michelle was by far, the best decision we made when it came to our wedding. At first I thought that I could save some money and plan my wedding on my own. I was quickly overwhelmed by how many details and decisions go into planning a wedding, so we decided to hire Michelle for a partial package. She gave us a guideline early on of everything we would need to do and was with us every step up the way to make sure we were on track with planning. We had a relatively modest budget (I think) compared to other weddings in Los Angeles, and Michelle really worked with us to stick to it. By far the most helpful part to me in terms of planning was that I had no idea how to bring together all the different details and come up with a cohesive vision. Michelle took the very vague description of what I wanted and really brought to life. People always joke that something will inevitably go wrong on your wedding day. She made our planning process completely smooth and practically stress-free. We eventually had a dream team of professionals who've all worked together before, and they've all made our wedding day special. Due to COVID, we had to make several changes in less than a month before our wedding. When my wife and I decided to move our reception from indoor to outdoor, Michelle accommodated to our request without hesitation. Moreover, she also accommodated to our last minute add-ons/removals of guest counts at short notices (because it will happen!) Michelle is just incredible. Her attentiveness, attention to detail, organization, and overall aesthetic eye gets a 12 out of 10. We don't know why anyone would choose to go it alone when planning a wedding, but whether you're considering a planner or a coordinator, the answer is "yes, do it". Michelle helped us select the venue, negotiated an incredible deal (which alone covered her fee 2-3x over) laid out (and kept us to) a tight timeline, put vendor options in front of us with her recommendations, was available to respond to any and all inquiries, and adeptly handled last minute vendor issues, and handled basically everything the day of. A lot of planners would probably leave it totally up to the couple to choose from a set of presented vendors or options such as table linens, furniture, color scheme, menu options, etc. -- Michelle knows this business so well and has such a great eye that she always has an opinion (and it's always right!). There are not enough words to describe how wonderful Somni Events is. My husband and I hired Somni for their month-of coordination package and were paired with Janice as our main coordinator. I was a very hands-on bride and did most of the planning myself, but we needed someone to manage everything on the day of our wedding so that we can sit back and enjoy the day. Janice started working with us several months prior to our wedding and stepped in when our original ceremony venue cancelled on us. She helped us navigate all our vendors and pulled everyone (and I mean everyone: vendors, wedding party, and family!) together for the big day. She was honest about what we needed/did not need so that we weren't wasting dollars here and there. She also gave great input for last minute décor decisions, and I really loved her eye for style! The particular standout features from the planning process and the events themselves: - Michelle was able to translate my rambling and somewhat disjointed Pinterest boards into two distinct looks for our weddings, and made them feel both current and timeless - When we wanted them, she helped us understand options for low, medium, high so we could consider our budget - She's very familiar with the greater Los Angeles / Orange County area, which was great as far as brainstorming venues, vendors, etc. - She either seemed to know or seemed to be able to solve any request / brainstorm - from short listing bakeries to having a harpist on hand to a Chinese speaking emcee, where to get a traditional Chinese dress, etc. - Her team on day of (for both weddings) - absolute MACHINES, running us like clockwork which is totally my speed - so we didn't have to think about schedules, timing, anything, just show up when told - Her suggested vendors were unfailingly super nice, collaborative, and several really went the distance for making their portions of our wedding as beautiful / unique as possible - I felt great about trusting her guidance on vendors - She does a good job balancing offering her view (and she's always got a strong POV which is great) but creating space for us to voice our POV if we had one across everything from design, where to save budget, where we could be more flexible in itineraries, etc. Overall we had such a beautiful wedding experience (which I wasn't always confident we would given so much going on in such a condensed amount of time) and it really would not have happened without Michelle and her team. I was in constant email communication with Michelle and set up a few in person meetings for when I was in town. She always gave me options to choose from so I wasn't overwhelmed and helped me make decisions when I was being indecisive (which was frequent). It was like Michelle knew exactly what I liked!
