I just got back yesterday from a 5 day stay at Solmar with my husband. We purchased our room in combination with our airfare and opted for all-inclusive directly from the Solmar Website. We also ordered a shuttle service to and from the hotel as well as trip insurance. I have no regrets. Prior to our trip we got an email from the hotel providing us with walking directions to the shuttle pick up area, it had a map and indicated where timeshare people would be at the airport along with tips (avoid these people--it was funny). We were able to roll right out of the airport and were taken to our shuttle and on the road in less than 10 minutes. Our shuttle was air conditioned and the driver was nice, he brought us right to our hotel and it took about 40 minutes to drive to Cabo. We were checked in right away, given our all inclusive wristbands (they put them on you at the counter) and then were headed to our room within ten minutes. We were offered to talk to a timeshare person, said no thank you and that was the end of that. We were upgraded for free to a one bedroom suite (I had booked and paid for a studio) free of charge. We were situated right by the pool and could walk right to the pool area from one of our two patios in about 15 steps. If we left through our front door we walked right onto the beach as the lot next to solar is vacant and it's just sand straight down to the ocean.
Our room was great. We had a living room that had a dining table, a kitchenette, and a full refrigerator. There were welcome drinks in our room that we drank and weren't charged for, since we were all inclusive they were complimentary. We had two full bathrooms. There is a sofa and large chair, the sofa pulls out to a bed. great AC in the room. The bathrooms are colorful Mexican tile. Our bedroom had a huge California king bed that was very comfortable. Some nights we left the patio screen door open to hear the ocean. It was amazing how quiet it was at night and how SAFE the property was. The TV in the Master got a surprising amount of channels, we were able to catch NFL on Sunday which wasn't expected. There was a GIANT jacuzzi tub that could easily fit 4 grown adults in the master bath. I saw other reviews that mentioned bugs, I never saw an ant or any other bug in our room, not once and we only opted for maid service on two of the days we were there. They offer turndown service and towels each night and that was plenty for us.
The pool was perhaps my favorite part of the resort. I spent so many hours poolside being waited on by the staff. I drank more mixed drinks than I care to admit, perhaps a lifetime record in 5 days. The swim up bar is awesome, it's fun to make friends with the servers and other guests staying at the resort. The resort is relatively small...perhaps only 50 units or so, so it's easy to make acquaintances as it's not a very busy place at all. There was a hot tub, but I never used it, there's also a very shallow end of the pool for non-swimming little kids, but there were only maybe 3 children we encountered at the resort while we were there. The scene was mostly Americans ranging in age from 30-60 if I were to profile the main demographic.
Food. I ate all the food... as much as I could from each menu. With all inclusive you can eat at the main restaurant, Tejaban, the smaller restaurant at the upper pool (it's called a snack bar but serves a full menu including filet minon, so I think it's not named well) the sushi bar, and the theme night buffets. Each meal has a different menu at the restaurant. With breakfast I would get bottled water, a smoothie, coffee, and a mimosa/bloody mary and maybe two rounds of that....just for my beverages, and the servers wouldn't bat an eye--totally normal. The food was great in terms of taste and presentation. I didn't eat anything I didn't like. There portions were perfect for one, except desserts are small so I would often order more than 1. I would usually eat breakfast on the patio (before it became too warm outside) eat lunch at the "snack bar" for lunch, drink and snack all day by the pool.
I was concerned about tipping. I read other reviews and saw that tips were expected. I stopped tipping. It made no difference in terms on the service, and the staff service was no different following tips than non-tips. Staff all speaks English and were kind as could be. The staff are what made this resort amazing, especially the waiters. When we checked out we had no unexpected charges. We did get wifi for three of the days were were there for $5/day, but we arranged for that charge at the front desk and were not surprised. The resort is a 10 min walk from downtown/marina. We saw sea turtles lay eggs and babies hatch on the beach while we were there. I WILL go back to Solmar next time I go to Cabo San Lucas. Great deal! Perfectly affordable, if you are considering--do the all inclusive. Food down town was not cheap Mexican food, it's American prices, pay now or pay later :) read more
