We spent a lot of time visiting different churches and different denominations and I'm so glad we found a home at Saint Andrew's. The community is open, welcoming, and inclusive. You don't need to be Episcopalian (in fact, I am not), or subscribe to any set of beliefs, or be of any race, creed, sexual orientation, or even dress code in order to participate fully here. The sermons are an important part of the service for me, and St. Andrew's is blessed with preachers that are engaging and thoughtful. Oh, and getting here is easy to boot: fifteen minute walk from the Metro, or plenty of parking.

We were not only denied, but were treated to a long tirade after communion ended: the priest ranted for at least 10 minutes about how "that's not how things are done." Keep in mind that the Archdiocese of Washington, DC, to which this parish belongs, has said that you cannot be denied receiving communion on the tongue. In addition, Mass was conducted very casually without much reverence or respect. I suppose the way they treat the attendees was reflected in the way they treat Our Lord. We felt ashamed and singled out, and taken aback by the way Mass was conducted. We have never been back.

I first came across this church a few weeks ago when me and the Tribe attended their Trunk or Treat…read moreevent. Recently we joined them again to attend their Community Thanksgiving Dinner. We love Community dinners--they are an excellent way to bond with a diverse group of people within the community whom you never may have met. We met folks of different ages, ethnicities, talents and even churches. The food was potluch shared by community members, while eating we were treated to lovely piano playing (and riffs) by a member, during dinner the children out together a puzzle game of World counties. After dinner we roasted marshmallows over a huge fire pit and enjoyed s'mores. It's important to note that this church is a generous one, practices what they preach and serves a connector to some of the homeless in the community--a few of whom I was happy to see joined us for the dinner.

I'd describe it as pretty conservative, yet diverse. There's a good racial mix of Black, White, and…read moreAfricans, and some others as well to a lesser degree. Everybody is generally friendly & welcoming here. They don't use musical instruments or have a choir. Everybody sings 'a capella'-style. They have prayers, sing hymns, do announcements, sermons, full-water-immersion baptisms, take communion(bread & juice), and take up a collection. Women aren't allowed to preach to men here. I've never known any LGBT people here, but I don't think they would feel comfortable being "out" at this church. The pews(benches) are cushioned. You can dress up or go casual, nobody will hassle you about it. The sermons are usually boring, or they spend too much time focusing on minutia details of scripture, essentially beating water out of rocks. They interpret the Bible pretty literally and strictly, at least to the extent of not violating state & federal laws. There are Sunday school classes for all age groups, but they are very boring usually. Sometimes the teenager classes are fun when they are run like a discussion group. There's no playground on-site, but it's right behind the new movie theater. There's no daycare. They do VBS(Vacation Bible School) every year and they have 'Ladies' Day' events. During sermons, they also have "Children's Worship/"Primary Preaching" classes targeted at toddlers through about 6th grade. They have a puppet show in the Children's Worship. I've been to this church a handful of times and I love it. The only reason I don't go there…read moreregularly is that I belong to another church for 4 years now and I am usually at work when New Leaf's service begins at 4:15 on Sunday afternoons. However, yesterday, my church's power was out due to Hurricane Irene and so was my job's(Amen!) so I went to New Leaf. Here's what I love about New Leaf. It is very comfortable. I know- comfy-ness might not be the first thing a person thinks of, or searches for, when looking for a church, but that's what I feel there. I feel comfy. The people are young-ish(20's, 30's, a couple of 40's and a few older), the room is comfy(they use space in an Episcopal church) and it seems more of a setting for a band's practice space or someone's living room than it does a church. People are dressed casually and they worship freely and quite musically- which I love! The pastor is a very nice regular kind of guy. Everyone seems very down to earth and they are friendly and open. The church is new and kind of small and I think that's one of the things I like about it, although there's something about them that makes it seem like they could grow to be huge, if not in a numbers way than in an impact on the community kind of way. I have been there twice now when there are quest speakers and yesterday's were wonderful. I wish that the message they delivered could have been broadcast on CNN. So, if you're looking for a new church that is out in the community- part of the community, feels like it's going forward, focuses on God's love and ROCKS, this might be the church for you! Just started going to the Church and it couldn't be more welcoming. Almost everyone I have met has…read morebeen so nice to talk to and even have fellowship after mass. I met a few parishioners and we talked about coffee after mass. The parish office thought it was a great idea and now we have coffee and doughnuts after the 10am mass. They have a great choir with an organ (though I am a piano type of choir person) and they sound great. The parents who send their kids to the school seem very happy with it too. Glad I started going to HRC.
