Lamb shoulder and Brazilian steak. Forget the steak, get more Lamb!
Eric C.

I followed the previous review here and was not disappointed, food here is phenomenal! Our server was pretty awesome too. Because of the previous review we followed the recommendation of the chicken liver pate, lamb shoulder, gnocchi, but also tried the Brazilian steak. I think next time we would sub the Brazilian steak for more lamb! The lamb just melts in your mouth... Prices are also listed on their website, and our total bill came out to about $160 USD. If it sounds like a lot, we did get two bottles of wine ($60-$70 nzd a bottle)...for just us two... Oh, and they got an outdoor (covered) seating area with heaters!

Social Kitchen was the best restaurant in New Plymouth. We came fairly late, especially for local standards. The street was empty, but once you open the door, you feel the heat and it was very lively inside. The waiter was very nice and helpful. All the food we ordered were very flavorful and seasoned well. The stand outs were the gnocchi, the goat and lamb. These dishes far exceeded expectations. I would definitely eat here again.

Calamari balls (?)

Where do I start with this review ??!! The food is amazing. We had the snapper ceviche, calamari balls, flaming halloumi and fire cracker chicken (very spicy for us). Then we had the skirt steak cooked med rare and it arrived with a beautiful hunk of flavoured/herbed butter and chimichurri sauce we also had the polenta fries. It was all amazing. I also had a drink called caprihariana (?). Go and eat there!!! I may have misspelled some items or called them the wrong name, but you get the idea!! The service is excellent as well! The decor is really cool and they have at outside eating area as well.

Beef Tartar

Top restaurant to visit. All dishes were delicious. Service and atmosphere were also high quality. The lamb shoulder is the chefs specialty; it was the best lamb dish I had in New Zealand. Beef tartar was also excellent; hand cut and much more chunky (in a good way) than others.

Delicious side.

Very good food with a contemporary menu. Attentive service but also some big groups and therefore very loud.

The food is tasty and my favourite dish was the beautiful lamb shoulder cooked in the style of the cuisine from Southern France.

We actually ate here so definitely a different experience from takeout…read more Let's start off...the seafood here is quite good. If you love oysters, just don't waste your time on them here, at least not raw. They are not served cold like they are in the states and they lack almost any briny flavor. Just do the mussels here in NZ. We had oysters and fish and chips (fried and grilled). The fish and chips were very good (well maybe not the chip portion, those were just okay) salad they came with was good too. The service was very friendly overall...but...and it's a big but. If you're from the US, get used to LOOONG waits in New Zealand. Service is never fast for prepared food. This was excessively long for even New Zealand standards. We waited almost an hour for our food from ordering. We almost walked out before our entrees came, because it was so long. That being said, they make good food here, just be very very patient. If you're crunched for time, Go elsewhere.

Popped in to grab a bit of a nicer Friday night takeaway. Very pricey for fish and chips, $45 for…read morewhat you would spend $25 on at the local fish n chip shop - so we were expecting great things! A quick 2 minute trip home and we opened our carefully packaged meal to find stodgy semi-raw batter, smelly fish and greasy soggy chips. Worst yet a phone call to the manager to raise the concern was met with indifference and a refusal to do anything to rectify the issue.
