I came here with my boyfriend for his birthday on a Monday evening. We went during happy hour so we sat at the bar and ordered a couple of items off the happy hour menu. The happy hour menu features dishes for $4-6. For the food: I got the spicy feta spread for $5. It's pretty small since it's on the happy hour menu and it comes with a couple slices of carrots, cucumbers, bread, and pickled onion. It was good, but also kind of basic. We also ordered the mac and cheese off the happy hour menu. I think it was $6. It was delicious!! It came out of the kitchen steaming. It was so cheesy and so good. My boyfriend and I both got sangrias ($5 each). I got the white and he got the red. The red was a dry wine and the white was a sweet wine. We ended up preferring the white sangria because we both like sweet wine. We also got Korean chicken fried steak. At this point, the staff realized that my boyfriend and I were pretty much sharing everything so they split the steak onto separate plates before they brought it out. That was so sweet of them! For the dessert: I wanted to surprise my boyfriend, so I pulled our waitress aside without him noticing and asked her if she could put a candle in the SoBo sundae. I also gave her my credit card so my boyfriend wouldn't pay. Not only did they bring out the sundae with a candle in it, but they also didn't charge us for it! I was fully prepared to pay for the sundae so that was extremely nice of them to take it off the bill. Overall, SoBo Cafe is a really cool place and the food is pretty good. Places like the SoBo Cafe remind me of why I prefer to dine in Baltimore as opposed to Washington, DC. In 2016, I began my rant against what I termed DC's decent into "Gentrification Cuisine" and the downward spiral only continues in 2017 with DC now being considered a "serious foodie town". It seems that every dining establishment in DC is angling to be the next Michelin star rated, Food & Wine darling, or boast of their James Beard nominated chef leading the kitchen. As one of the oldest cities in America, Baltimore has always had more of a Blue-Collar feel with lots of diverse authentic neighborhoods. SoBo Cafe is located in the Federal Hill district a few blocks from the Inner Harbor. This place is essentially a converted row house and when you step into the restaurant, there is a tiny waiting area that immediately abuts the bar and hostess stand. It is easy to imagine the main dining area as once being someone's living room. Tables are crammed side-by-side, and on my visit, every one of them were filled with hungry brunch diners. We had to sit at the bar, which is fine since the friendly bartender answered all of our questions and even made a few suggestions. The "Back to Bed" sandwich immediately caught my eye. The sandwich consists of applewood smoked bacon, ham, house made sausage, eggs, cheddar cheese, bacon mayo, and served with a side of home fries. The only modification I made was to change the bread from plain white to the house biscuit bread. Can I tell you, that this was the "best decision ever?" Note, there is a substitution charge for the biscuit bread, but it's well worth the price. The sandwich is mammoth and definitely large enough to share. In fact, we were going to each get our own entrees, but the bartender suggested just splitting the sandwich. I really appreciated this honesty, since not many places will do this anymore. And extra bonus points in that the kitchen was nice enough to serve the sandwich on two plates and evenly split the meal. The "back to bed" was delicious. All of the meats were cooked perfectly and house made sausage had just the right snap when you bit into it, as good sausage should. The potatoes also had a nice brown char with subtle spice. Do yourself a favor and ask for the scratch made hot sauce. I'm not sure what's in it...I just know it's good. The bottle arrives with no label in order to showcase the vibrant orange and red colors. The heat level is not outrageous, but just hot enough to cause a few beads of sweat on the brow. Another insider TIP is to head over to their retail outlet SoBo market (https://www.yelp.com/biz/sobo-market-baltimore) and buy some of that goodness for home use. Our meal with coffee was less than $20! This same meal in DC would have easily been in the $30 range, and the food quality perhaps not as high. Great intimate restaurant in Fed Hill! My friends and I were a larger party, but we were able to all be seated at the bar, where the bartender took great care of us. The food was so yummy -- the Chicken Pot Pie had the perfect flaky crust and is great if you're in the mood for comfort food (note: the sauce has more of a citrusy flavor that can be a little off putting to some). Seared Scallops were fresh and juicy, with a nice kick to them, and the Mussels also were nicely spiced. The standout dish here is the Mac n Cheese!!! read more

I'll start my review with a little story of why I decided to eat here without looking at my trusty Yelp app first. I was walking past the restaurant with my girlfriend when a couple walked out carrying a small child and laughing with a waitress. I commented to the couple that it was obvious that they had a good experience. The couple told me that Sobo has the best chicken pot pie and the best brunch pancakes and that they used to eat here every week before they had their child (it was obvious that they loved their child for much, even though some of their money had to be diverted away from Sobo). So, I had to try Sobo after this! The Chipotle Pumpkin Soup was perfect. A little zip paired with a creamy pumpkin soup. My Korean fried steak was also delicious. I very much enjoyed the Asian style gravy and the kimchi collard greens. My girlfriend got the chicken pot pie and we loved it (I helped myself to some). I've had this place on my bookmark list for months and missed coming for restaurant week so when I finally got the chance to go I jumped on it! We arrived and was seated right away which is always a plus in my book. We started with a couple of cocktails which were delicious! i should not be as impressed with cocktails as i am but when they are made well, look pretty and dont get me drunk i am in love! as far as food i enjoyed it. SoBo Cafe has some awesome accolades and came highly recommended, after a Monday night dinner our overall impression was that SoBo is definitely not a bad spot - but it ran middle of the pack for us. We were immediately welcomed and had our reservation fulfilled, not only that but we scored parking right out front! Perfect. The place was pretty quiet, around 3 tables and 2 people at the bar - but Monday's at 6:30 aren't usually the busiest. It picked up after 7 and they nearly had a full house, the restaurant staff seemed to know almost all the customers which is always cool. For whatever reason we were seated at a very quiet time, but it took 5 minutes to get water brought to us... and we assumed it was a busser that brought us the water as she promptly left instead of asking us about drinks. She came back 5 minutes later to take our drinks, even though we were ready to order she promptly left again. Weird service. Anyway, onto the grub! I love chicken liver mousse, rich, smooth, and creamy. I'm not sure how they created their mousse but it was thick and didn't smoothly spread at all on the tasty crispy and thin bread that came with it. Not only was it thick and paste like, but the flavor wasn't quite there. Wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't good. The spinach pie/spanakopita was pretty tasty, light, crispy phyllo layers on a rich spinach and feta filling. Was definitely a highlight. For dinner we had the pasta special of squid ink on one side, regular dough on the other spinach and fontina(I think fontina cheese) raviolis. Cooked al dente and presumably a house made pasta was a good pasta but the filling didn't convey much and may have been overpowered by the scampi sauce and shrimp atop the raviolis. The shrimp left a strong taste on the dish, and may have been better as a larger sweeter shrimp - again the dish was fine, but not something we'd order again. The Korean fried steak sounded too interesting not too get sauce rimmed plate building up with mashed potatoes, chicken fried steak, then a smattering of vegetables - hats off in the spice department and flavors as it had phenomenal taste, but the texture and richness of it all combined made for a very large dish. The breading devoured the thin steak and didn't adhere to it very well - personally I think a chicken breast would have been a better meat, though I definitely dig the originality of the unique take on a traditional chicken fried steak. The place is cozy, and full of regulars even on a cold Monday night - they're definitely doing well for themselves and wish them the best - just wasn't for us. read more

I went to SoBo for the first time after debating for weeks whether I should go. Yelp recommend it and I'm always open for a good breakfast spot. I decided to go for brunch which started at 10:30, and I considered making a reservation since I heard how small it is inside. I took a chance and got there exactly at 10:30. When I got inside I noticed that the place wasn't crowded and I asked to be seated. The hostess asked if I have a reservation, I said no, and she said all she had available was at a bar table. This would've been okay, but I was with my 2 yr old. I asked if they had a booster seat, and she said no. They had a high chair but it wasn't high enough for the table. So my daughter and I sat at the high bar table, which she could barely see over the table. Why is any of this important? I highly recommend making a reservation, because getting there the minute they open isn't enough to guarantee you a suitable seat. Now let's get to to the food. I decided to try their signature sandwich, the Back to Bed. The sandwich was like a 4 inch high mega sandwich, topped with bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, and cheese, served in a Texas toast. It was a tasty sandwich but not necessarily great. It was just okay. Did it send me back to bed, yes!!! :) The staff was very friendly and the service was excellent. The food came out fast and the staff was super attentive. All in and all it was a good experience. I got lucky and dodged a bullet with finding a place to sit. Next time I'll try something else on the menu and plan ahead. Is it my favorite brunch spot in the city? No, but it's definitely worth the experience. read more

Have now been 3 times, twice for dinner, once for lunch. Can I say I'm so happy they serve lunch? It's got a great cozy atmosphere with tablecloths and cloth napkins. For lunch my friend had a pumpkin sausage flatbread which was really delicious. I had a farro salad that was HUGE and very good (with too much farro--although how can I complain about that? I should have asked for more salad, less farro when I ordered). For dinner we've had the spreads (chicken liver really good), mac & cheese (really rich), scallops (YUM--4 big scallops on top of kabocha squash puree), kimchi chicken fried steak, pot pie, pork chop and mushroom fettuccine. Very good with large portions. Wednesdays and Sundays are $25 bottles of wine, and it looks like most other days have specials also! read more

Came by for lunch because it's a short walk from my office. We came right before the lunch wave so we were seated promptly. I had the French onion soup with a grilled cheese sandwich that came with choice of green salad, pasta salad, or potato chips. The French onion soup was a good potion, and stayed hot throughout my ENTIRE meal. How it stayed hot, I'm not sure, but it was really good. The grilled cheese sandwich was good (don't know how hard that really is to mess up). The only thing I would have probably preferred is that the tomatoes that they put on it were diced versus whole cherry tomatoes. But that's just a personal thing, I prefer tomatoes diced in general. It was a good amount of cheese, but not too much where it makes the sandwich a mess with it overpowering the bread. My coworkers enjoyed their food as well (one had been before, the other was visiting from another office out of town). I definitely want to come back to try their brunch one weekend! read more

We went to Sobo expecting brunch during the weekday but instead they only their lunch menu which by the way, was AMAZING. We were a large group of 7 people and they accommodated us perfectly. I would recommend making a reservation ahead of time with the restaurant or open table since it is a small homey restaurant. The best item on the menu imo is the French dip. Decided to come here because my husband has been craving a cinnamon bun, so I saw that sobo's thing was homemade cinnamon buns with cream cheese frosting and decided it's worth a try. Husband got the big breakfast and I got the chicken pot pie. He said his breakfast was okay. He had asked for the eggs to be over easy but they were super runny almost like sunny side up. The breakfast was just a normal breakfast. He said the pancakes were just ok. The chicken pot pie was good, super savory, there was thyme in it and the flaky top had herbs in it as well. Not disappointed but not blown away. Cinnamon bun was good, not too sweet, just right. Probably wouldn't get it again but definitely something to try if you go. I went to SoBo Cafe for restaurant week a few weeks back. I had a reservation but was late due to traffic. When I arrived I was informed that my table was reserved for someone else soon after mine but I could sit at the bar for a more leisurely meal. I chose the bar. The atmosphere is extremely welcoming. I felt as if I had visited a friends home for a dinner party. My coat was taken at the door and hung on hooks near the entry. The restaurant is two renovated rowhouses so it was fitting. I ordered mac n cheese for an appetizer. It was pretty good; creamy and flavorful. It was a venture from the traditional southern baked mac n cheese because it had tomatoes, but I was pleasantly surprised and I'd definitely order it again. For my entree I chose the Korean chicken fried steak with kimchi collard greens. I LOVE Korean food and it was the PERFECT fusion of Asian and southern comfort food. I wish they would package up and sell the kimchi. It was amazing! Everything kimchi should be: crisp, refreshing, spicy, and sweet. Dessert was parsnip cake with a caramel sauce. I love a good root vegetable so I was pleased. All in all great experience, so go try it! If I didn't live across town I'd be a regular for sure! read more

We had a great night at SoBo. Walked up & were able to get a table outside almost right away. They needed to clean it & it was ready pretty quick. Menu was good with a lot of choices. We had the chicken wings, brussels, crab dip & salmon nicoise. Everything was delicious. The salmon came with a lot of fresh vegetables. The brussels were some of the better brussels we have had in the area. Wings were not too hot and were cooked well. The crab dip itself was worth the trip and the sourdough bowl with it was amazing. We had to be in the downtown/Federal Hill area on Sat the 17th for a specific reason and we wanted to mazimize our time and have dinner at a local spot. We mapped out the restaurants near our main stop and came across Sobo Cafe. The menu looked appealing and the location was convenient so we decided to try it. We were not disappointed! Such a quaint, cozy atmosphere with colorful walls and photos of the area that play off the wall color. It was a bit of a quiet night in Sobo, according to the server. But that was ok with us. My husband and I each had the Sobo burger and we both enjoyed it very much. For me, it was likely the best burger I have ever had! The beef was so tasty; well done for me to perfection but still moist and juicy. Something a little different on the burger are the roasted cherry tomatoes rather than sliced tomato. They are like little bursts of flavor when you bite into them. The roasted potatoes on the side were wonderfully flavored and a nice change from fries. The salad was fresh and a nice size serving. The meal was nicely presented. The service was very good and the server was friendly. Music played softly and did not interfere with converesation. We found an on-street parking spot less than one block away. I have craved that burger over and over since then so we will definitely be going to Sobo again! read more

This cafe is a great spot to stop in for a quick and tasty brunch. The menu has a decent amount of vegetarian options, we opted for the egg and cheese on a biscuit. Came here for Sunday brunch with a friend, and without a reservation, we were (to my surprise) immediately seated. I really appreciated the interior decorations with the impressionistic paintings and the ample natural sunlight streaming through the windows. Very quaint, cozy, and warm-- just from the decor itself I was already content and at ease. Service was also very friendly-- added plus. The starter zucchini bread was warm, soft, and very sweet-- really gets your tummy grumbling. Iordered an iced coffee and house smoked salmon omelette, which came with a side of toast and fruit. The portions are huge! The omelette was cooked to perfection and very, very filling- the salmon not too overpowering and balanced well with the egginess. However, I was disappointed by the iced coffee-- my ice melted almost immediately and the coffee almost tasted watery. We also ordered a house cinnamon bun to share, and it was divine. Just to the side of the busy area of federal hill, this small café is a brilliant addition to the culinary progression in the neighborhood. I was a bit curious of this quaint café as it was not something people would mention visiting, but I was pleasantly surprised. Coming here for brunch, there is a great variety on the menu to cater to all tastes. I was able to try the acorn squash and artichoke soup, cinnamon roll, the shakshuka. Seasoning was very delicate for the soup, and the soup had a nice umami but also holiday-like spice to warm the soul. The cinnamon roll is great to share and its flavors have balance. The shakshuka was overall well-balanced, but the tomato base seemed a slightly bit over-seasoned with salt. The plates are big here, so expect to either share or take food back home. Overall, I was very satisfied with my meal. The ambiance is a bit tight due to the small area to sit within. I didn't enjoy the next table's boisterous conversation, but that's just how it is. read more

Sobo is my top spot in federal hill. The chicken pot pie is mouth watering with creamy filling and a perfectly baked puff-pastry as the topping. Literally the best pot pie I've ever had, even better than my moms (shh). They have a great brunch, wine Wednesday (select bottles for $25), and amazing cinnamon buns. On Monday's it's pasta night, and I got a glass of wine, a Caesar salad, and a delicious pasta dish for only $20! There are a few tables outside, so it's a great place to get happy hour (5-7) on a warm summer night. The indoor atmosphere is very cozy as well. This was one of my friends top choices to check out for Baltimore restaurant week, and let me start off by saying it did not disappoint! We were all greeted by their friendly staff while were seated. It is a quaint place to eat. It's a bit hidden so it could be difficult to spot while driving. Since the restaurant is small, I would suggest for people to call ahead of time for tables. While looking around you'll notice that they also sell artwork from local artists that are hanging on their walls. Which I thought was just adorable. I had the most delicious three course meal. I started with their mulled wine spiced with cranberries and oranges. Which was so smooth and delicious. As my starter I ordered the Thai PEI curry muscles. The muscles with the Thai curry sauce was spectacular. I was really surprised by the portion size, it was very big. They also provided just enough bread to soak up the delicious curry broth at the end of the pot. Hhhmm As my main dish I ordered the Peruvian Anticucho Salmon. It has guajillo chili glaze on top of the salmon with green onion, saffron rice, and roasted asparagus topped with a creamy queso crema. I could not get enough of this dish because it was so delicious. I really wanted to lick my plate clean! For dessert I ordered a Mexican Chilly chocolate dipping sauce that comes with a butter cookie. If you've ever tried Mexican mole, it's a lot like it but much less bitter and more sweet. Honestly I liked the sauce more without the cookie. The sauce doesn't pair well with the tangy butter cookie. This dessert is definitely an acquired taste. You are probably better off ordering the carrot cake, which I personally thought it was too sweet. Overall, i highly recommend this SoBo cafe! I'm looking forward to returning back myself. We love SoBo, having now visited in four separate occasions over the last couple of years. It is the best restaurant within walking distance of the stadiums in downtown Baltimore, period. It's one of the very best in the City. As born, raised and lifelong Baltimoreans, we should know too. What not to expect: a lengthy and diverse menu. SoBo is no diner; does not mean to be. Also do not expect many options under about $15 or so. Nice date spot; an affordable family destination is not their market aspiration. What to expect: Excellent, imaginative entrees that change from time to time, with the seasons or otherwise. Everything simply was top notch. Drinks too. What else to expect: pregnant wait staffers. Seriously; seems every time we go. We joke with them that it must be something in their water. How best to experience SoBo: Date Night. Once you're past the first date or two and each of you has not thrown the other back into the sea and gone fishing, this is the place. Before/after a stadium event or otherwise. Stopped by here for Sunday brunch pre-O's game on a recommendation of a local friend. It was an easy 10-11 min walk from Camden Yards and well worth the walk. Booze: I was craving a bloody mary and was initially sad that they didn't serve hard alcohol. HOWEVER, they have a homemade bloody mary alternative which instead of vodka used sake! I honestly couldn't tell the difference, it was EXACTLY what I was craving. My wife ordered the raspberry mimosa and it was great. Food: We split the homemade cinnamon roll (A must, one is definitely enough for a couple as an app), my wife got the salmon benedict, and I got the "back to bed" sandwich. The salmon benedict was perfect and had a great smokey taste to it. The BTB sandy was exactly as advertised. It literally had everything you would want for breakfast in one sandwich. I struggled to finish it all, so you could probably split it between two people or just gut it and finish the whole thing. Extras: The service there was top-notch. We even got a free drink because the bartender had made one extra by accident. I loved the jalapeño Mac and cheese!! If you like spicy food, you must try it!!! We got it for the table and we all finished it in like 2 minutes. We went for the Creekstone cheese burger, which I thought were good. Not amazing though. I didn't really like their Fingerlin potatoes side with the burger either. Sunday morning, and breakfast was required. SoBo Cafe delivered one of the best brunch experiences we've had in a while. Our beverage order came quickly, and the coffee (cooooffeeeee...) was both hot and strong. No weak, barely-brown water here. The cinnamon buns are absolutely decadent - yeasty, sweet, and soaked with a vanilla sauce that replaces the normal icing glaze and keeps it from being too sugary to eat. Order these if they're available. A couple of slices of tasty, complementary zucchini bread showed up with the drinks as well. Creamed chipped beef came with a seasoned white gravy and served over a split buttermilk biscuit - biscuits and gravy with dried beef instead of sausage. Two over-easy eggs came on the side along with fresh fruit. Shakshouka is a Middle Eastern dish of eggs baked in a tomato sauce and was a cool change from the usual stuff you see on brunch menus. SoBo's version poaches the eggs separately instead of in the tomato sauce (understandable for prepped-to-order), was just slightly spicy with red pepper, and served up with grilled seasoned potatoes, toasted baguette and fruit. Noteworthy was that everything came out hot and quickly. Both dishes were definitely made fresh, with nothing dying under heat lamps or drying out in banquet pans. All the food was delicious. This is a sign of a well-managed menu and well-tuned kitchen. Minus alcoholic beverages, for baked goods to split and two hearty breakfasts, the tab ran to just over $16 a head w/tax. This also seems to be a decent spot for families with well-behaved young ones. The space is a bit tight and loud for more rambunctious ones, though. read more

The food is really good and has so many great options, it taste really wonderful too. I like the House Smoked Chicken Wings, and Dry Rubbed Bavette Steak. The meat there is well-cooked and absolutely good too. The menu were amazing and great portions too. Drinks were fantastic too. Wandered into Sobo Cafe on a Friday night after loving a takeout meal from them recently. The restaurant itself is tucked on a quiet side street. It's relatively small, but with a decent sized bar we were able to snag a spot for two at the bar without a reservation on a weekend night. The dinner menu is on the smaller side, but with great options to chose from. We caught the tail end of happy hour and I was impressed with their various small plate offerings as well as drink deals. My dining partner and I both had chicken pot pies. Oh my goodness, this is some serious comfort food! Delicious, fresh, and covered with the most buttery flakey crust I've had. The food delivered to those around us looked amazing as well. I will definitely return to try their fresh salads and humus platter. The service is efficient and friendly. This place definitely has a local yet welcoming feel. Overall, a great spot for both fresh and homey feeling food and good service. In the future, I'd make a reservation or order takeout because of the small interior! read more

We were (4 of us) very excited to try this place cause of the 4-1/2 star rating. Happy hour is advertised as 5-7 but it is only 5-6...it is happy"hour" after all as we were told. Okay. The selection for happy hour is supremely limited. It is not for everything on their drink menu. It is one red, one type of rose, one Pinot Grigio, one moscato, and red sangria. Okay. Mussels and the flat bread with corn were recommended. Flat bread was good in flavor and toppings but soggy on the bottom. The mussels were tasty but we choked on the shards of lemongrass in the sauce. Not okay. The burgers were good - average. Just okay. The Peruvian chicken was dry and lathered in Mayo based sauces. The rice beans and corn were just that. They didn't seem seasoned at all. The tostones were not edible. They were fried in underheated grease and tasted heavily of old oil. So not okay. And the steak was well cooked but under seasoned. Ordered the steak with Brussel sprouts that tasted mostly burnt. As a $25 dish- so, so not okay. Our hefty bill did not reflect the quality of food. Service was great. The execution of food - not so much. We were disappointed to say the least. read more

I really enjoyed Sobo Cafe. The menu and service are wonderful. I've ordered take out and eaten at the bar; both experiences were enjoyable. I love their house salad as it is the perfect mixture of ingredients. The dressing is tart and delicious which complement the blue cheese and apples nicely. I ordered salmon and chicken each time I came. The portion size and quality was top notch. I have also tried the Korean Flatbread and Mussels, both were tasty and prepared well. All in all, I highly recommend this place and I will be back. Why I gave four stars instead of five was because I would love to see more vegetarian options. read more
