Another great ethnic grocery store! This is great if you are looking for East Indian and Caribbean…read moreingredients. It's a small grocery store but I found everything I needed to make my Indian meal here. On the left side is the produce and frozen foods and the other side sells spices, canned/jarred items and various rice and flour. They also offer Western Union services. Oh and did I mention there are 2 counters that sell hair weave supply in there too? It was a little different as I've never seen hair weaves sold in a grocery store before but aren't we all about "one stop shopping" now? I saw lots of items there like regular and whole wheat naan (fresh and frozen), injera, corn tortillas, papadam, and roti. The produce and frozen meat section are pretty small. I don't think I saw any fresh meat. They carry halal items like chicken and goat. There's also lots of frozen Indian dishes - kinda like the frozen food section in the main stream grocery stores except this one is full of Indian items. Great offering of prepackaged spices (whole and ground) - no bulk section except when it comes to pulses like peas and lentils. Depending on the spice, they come in small portions that will cost you about $2 each. Not bad although some of the spices come in larger amounts than I would want to buy since I don't make Indian dishes all the time. There are also lots of dried chillies available too. Service was nice as one lady helped me look for items even though I was about pay. It's nice cause one of the items I was looking for was actually under a different name than what my recipe called for - I would've never found it if she hadn't helped me! Note: They do take credit card but I think there was a note about a minimum of $5? Something like that. But I don't like to use credit at these small stores - margins are already low in grocery so I don't want them losing 3% out to Visa or whoever.

Young's is probably the best supermarket in Winnipeg if you're looking for Asian/ethnic food…read more It's located on William Avenue west of the Exchange District, and seems to be a popular place for Red River College students. They have a wide assortment of Asian products such as rice noodles, beef/cuttlefish/fish balls, BBQ pork, miso soup, tofu, etc. Produce isn't of the best quality, but they are definitely cheaper than your No Frills/Safeway alternative, so take it or leave it. Personally I purchase most of my produce from Young's even though I live in Osborne (and have a Safeway 5 min walk from my house). If you're wearing a backpack entering the store, you'll have to put it at the front. The cashier at the front will tell you where to leave it. Definitely a place I will shop frequently, especially coming from someone who misses Asian cuisine.

My disability makes shopping at Superstore impossible, its too big to walk for me, but this service allowed me to get decent groceries at decent prices (my income is limited due to disability). Now that they will only allow online ordering and pickup for those who pay online via credit card. Being on disability means I cannot get a credit card, so this service is no longer available for me. I saw this Sobeys store across the vast parking lot. Perfect! I drove over to this supermarket and parked fairly close to the main entrance. I walked in. There were shopping carts and baskets. I decided not to get either. I was only picking up a few items. I love going into a supermarket that I've never visited. Trying to figure out where things are and discovering awesome finds make me happy. It happened here. I loved seeing cranberries. It made me think of making sangria, but I can't from my hotel room. Ugh! It was cool seeing figs in trays. Yum! I found cut-up fruit. There were a few containers that were discounted by $2. I took two of them. The prepared foods made me drool. Quiche. Lasagna. Ham and scalloped potatoes. Everything looked amazing. I got a pack of three beef empanadas. They looked good. I looked at beverages. There were Pepsi one-litre bottles going for $1.33 each. It's decent price-wise. I got a few. I lined up at an express checkout. I got a nice woman who asked if I needed a bag. I waived it off at first. However, since I had donated a few dollars towards a local cause that Sobeys was supporting, I got a big paper bag for free. I paid for my goods and made my donation with a credit card. I tapped and was good. She also scanned my Scene+ card. She asked if I wanted to redeem my points towards a $10 discount on my goods. I was good continuing to amass points. This woman bagged all my items. She was great. I thanked her and grabbed my paper bag with my groceries. I put it in my rental vehicle and drove back to the hotel. I had cut-up honeydew melon back at my hotel room. It was yummy. No issues with freshness. I enjoyed shopping at this Sobeys. I'd do it again when I'm in the area. (473)

On Tuesday, I revisited a section of stores that are still there on Academy Road when I was a Winnipegger, between Queenston and Niagara Streets. Closer to Queenston was my dentist. She has since retired, but the dental office is still there. Next door is Chocolates on Academy. Yes, I used to get my teeth cleaned, get chocolates, and then hit this 7-Eleven next to the chocolate shop for a Slurpee. I moved away from this neighbourhood and lived in Osborne Village. I still came here for my dental appointments, Belgian chocolate, and Slurpee fixes when I lived there, as well as when I lived in Rochester, MN. On Tuesday, I came by to get chocolates and check out my neighbourhood 7-Eleven from years past hours before my flight back to Toronto. I parked in front of 7-Eleven. I've never had an issue parking. If the lot is full, you can always park on the street. It felt the same going in. I saw hot dogs, wings, and more. It was hot foods galore. What was different was seeing a microwave with all the ramen varieties that made me so happy. Next to the microwave was the Slurpee machine. It brought back fond memories of first arriving in Winnipeg and getting a large Slurpee in the middle of a heatwave. Winnipeg is the Slurpee capital of Canada. The city has more 7-Eleven stores than Starbucks cafes. I had to get a Slurpee. I saw Crush lime and needed to give it a try. I got a medium. I pulled out my 7Rewards barcode. I got the nicest woman at the checkout. She said hi to me when I walked in and she cashed me out. She scanned the barcode and I paid for my Slurpee with a credit card. Done! I thanked her and left sipping on my Slurpee. The Crush lime was so good. I was so happy. The paper straw was impressively sturdy. I'm so glad that I returned for sentimental reasons. I also enjoyed my Slurpee. (479)
