I took ski lessons at Snow Valley when I was a kid - everyone did, it was through the schools. I have to say, at that age I was impressed with everything they had. Today, I've been back and I'm far from impressed with Edmonton's ski hill. Anyone who enjoys skiing or takes it somewhat seriously (as a hobby or competitively) knows that Snow Valley doesn't have much to offer. I'm not a very good skier anymore and I was bored with Snow Valley only half an hour in. Everything is very basic and elementary. There aren't many options out there for skiing in Edmonton so unfortunately, we're stuck with it. I just have a hard time knowing that with all the snow we get and how freaking cold it gets here, that we can't build a better option for skiers. Thankfully, BC is not too far away. And trust me, it's worth the drive. Kicking Horse is the place to go!

Snow Valley is a great place for people to learn to ski or snowboard. It is NOT somewhere to come hoping for a great time if you are already a good at it. They offer up lessons and they are really helpful for beginners. If you already know what you are doing, Snow Valley is a great place to come to brush up your skills before hitting the mountains. You can get in some good practice runs when the season starts so that you don't have any rust when you hit the big times. It is a great place for people who want to take these winter sports and it is an awesome place for kids.

    Review Highlights - Snow Valley

When we finally hit the bigger slope, it was a lot better snow and it wasn't as slushy as the rabbit hill.

Vacancy Hall - Cool boutique pedals

    Vacancy Hall

I'm already a fan of Vacancy Hall even though the day I went only had two businesses open…read more Leprechaun FX was open and their store is right at the back of the hall and specializes in boutique guitar pedals. I had in fact heard of them just because my husband is a massive music nerd and loves all the gear that comes along with guitars. Next to them is Saraswati Designs with a beautifully laid out space displaying so much jewellery! Such variety, I was in there for ages! And, they have a sale table with some great deals! The hall itself is found underneath the Mercer building. Enter the Rostizado entrance but head downstairs to a cool quirky communal studio space. They make a point of hosting upcoming designers and local entrepreneurs. I want to go back and enjoy all the stalls they have set up in there, especially the one who makes those 'Still In Edmonton'Shirts. This place is definitely worth checking out if you find yourself downtown, or looking for an unusual gift, or just wanna know about some cool happenings in our great city!

Vacancy hall is in the basement of the Mercer building. When you go down the stairs there is a…read morerestaurant on your left (used to be a coffee shop) and a retail store on your right (door is usually closed which prevents customers from entering IMO). Once you go past these two businesses there is a small foyer where the bathrooms can be accessed then double doors going into Vacancy Hall. Within the Hall there are walls and garage door style doors for 6-7 separate businesses. They're all on the side which creates a central space for events. Since it's a basement the ceilings feel a little low but it's actually quite practical. Exposed tubes, pipes, and ducts give it some ambiance as does the painted mural on the far back wall. The communal event space can be used to throw parties, concerts, charity events, etc. Most of your equipment will need to be brought in though. They have a few tables, lighting, and garbage cans you can use which is thoughtful. Any audio equipment, seating, and decorations would need to be brought it. The legal capacity is 195 people but the 2 bathrooms available are single use locking doors which wouldn't work for a group that size. I don't know each of the stores that have rented spaces in the Hall but each location probably deserves it's own Yelp profile so I guess that's a job for another day!

Joy by Joelle - Katelyn + Quinn's Wedding

    Joy by Joelle

If you are feeling overwhelmed, lost or at your wits' end at the prospect of planning your wedding,…read morethen Joelle is the answer to your prayers. We were stuck in limbo with our wedding planning, tossing ideas around but not really committing to anything. We had an idea of what we wanted, but no concept of how to make that idea into a reality. Any planning efforts we made left us feeling overwhelmed at amount of work and organization required to put together our wedding. We just didn't feel like we had the time and energy we needed to plan on our own on top of working and living our busy lives... Enter Joelle! We were totally blown away after our very first consultation meeting by how organized and professional she was, not to mention how bubbly and upbeat. She's been planning weddings for over 4 years, and has a thorough understanding of the wedding industry, and great connections and knowledge of local vendors and venues. It was a no-brainer to work with her and have her co-ordinate our wedding. We were lucky enough to have Joelle fully co-ordinate our wedding. Once we started working with her, it was like an immense weight was lifted from our shoulders. She had organized spreadsheets and timelines for every aspect of our wedding, and would regularly keep in touch with us via email about what was going on and what we needed to do. We were planning a destination wedding in the Rockies, but we liked working with a planner based in Edmonton where we lived. We were able to meet regularly in person, which really put our minds at ease because we knew we were on the same page and that Joelle had everything under control! In the last couple of weeks leading up to the wedding, Joelle had to remind us to breathe, sit back, relax, and trust that she was handling everything. Boy was she right! We were actually able to relax and spend time together during the last couple days before our wedding. When we arrived at our wedding destination, we got to enjoy greeting family and friends as they arrived, and had a lovely relaxing rehearsal dinner with close family. Both of us slept well the night before the wedding because we knew Joelle had everything covered and we didn't have anything to worry about except being present, living in the moment and enjoying marrying each other and the experience of our wedding day. Seeing Joelle on the day of our wedding was a sight to behold. She was totally in her element, and we could tell she thrives off of making sure everything stays on track and goes according to plan. She was super attentive to everything we needed during our day. Need a water break, bathroom break, your dress bustled, a makeup touch-up, or a mimosa? Joelle was always there to lend a helping hand and make sure we had everything we needed to enjoy the experience of getting married. Even little things like making sure nobody paddled off in our rental canoe, or shooing away wayward tourists who wandered into our wedding venue were handled with grace and professionalism. She wrangled our friends and family for all the family photos that we wanted, so that we had more time for couples' photos with our photographer. Our family and friends got along with her and thought she was great! Since our wedding, our families have told us they understand why we decided to get a wedding planner, and how wonderful and helpful Joelle was on our wedding day. As far as wedding planning goes, we would say that the whole process was about as painless as it could possibly be, and Joelle is the one responsible for that! One of the things we appreciated most was that Joelle really took the time to get to know us as a couple, and got an understanding of what our vision was for our wedding. She helped us define, create and realize the wedding of our dreams, and we are so thankful! If you're hung up on your wedding planning or stuck in a wedding planning rut, Joelle can help you! We are so thankful that we were able to work with her, and can't recommend her enough!

Seriously, our wedding guests and family complimented how amazingly professional, organized and hilarious she was and we could not agree more! Nothing ever seemed impossible or too much to ask from Joelle. She was always accommodating to our schedules, mediated our indecisiveness, took us outside the box, and folded our napkins more times than anyone could bare just to make them PERFECT. She was there to look over every detail and make our wedding day stress free. I don't think our day could be any more special thanks to Joelle, and we have told everyone and their dog to hire her for their wedding too. Trust us, you NEED her so don't even think twice!
