A bit on the pricey side but then it's in Franz Josef... 100% touristy. So all the stores here cashing in. This place has an interesting mix of Asian and western foods. We tried the Nasi Goreng and the Duck bao. Both were very tasty. Tried their curry puff, sausage roll and Chicken & Mushroom Fillo. All good. Only thing is that it was freezing in the restaurant! The doors were left open and hence very drafty. Had to keep my jacket on. Service was good. Though the bakery was a bit slow... in all pretty good food for the middle of no where!

What a pleasant surprise to find this place in a town that is so small. It's hard to find good food options in a place thats so small, let alone find good Asian food. We were stuck in Franz Joseph trying to wait out a storm when we found this place. It was certainly a fusion type restaurant, but after looking inside and seeing the semi open kitchen concept, I saw that many of them were actually Asian chefs. We sat down and were served by a very nice waiter who explained the menu to us and went over some of the popular dishes. We went with Pad See Ew with chicken and duck noodle soup. The noodles were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of spice. The portion was also generous. The duck noodle soup had a generous amount of duck inside, and the broth tasted of duck flavor. I also loved that both the dishes provided a bunch of vegetables. I will say that the prices are a bit steep, but I feel like this place is a decent bang for your buck. Regardless of where you go, everything is going to be expensive purely because of where Franz Joseph is. If I ever come back to this tiny town, I will for sure visit again.

Ate at Snakebite in Franz Joseph for a post-lunch hike. Although I really enjoyed the food it was definitely an unexpected food choice at a brewery. I ended up choosing the chicken pad thai ($24). The server was very accommodating and non-judgey with my rather uncommon food allergy. The pad thai was delicious. On the side was a slice of lemon, crushed peanuts, red pepper flakes, and a tablespoon of raw sugar. The portion size was way more than I could eat, even after a hike. They provided a to go box for my leftovers, which was nice. The restaurant also has a large outdoor patio area, mostly covered, with a mix of picnic benches and tables.

Local beers and Indonesian, Thai, and Korean food done right?! What a great combination!! We were so happy to find great food in the little town of Franz Josef! I had the Indonesian rice with prawns which was delicious! It came with shrimp chips and a fried egg which were excellent additions to the dish! The flavor was excellent! One of the others in our group had the Korean short ribs which he said were delicious as well! we ordered some dumplings to start, but those actually came out after our entrees; oh well, they were still good! All of our entrees did not come out at the same time, but all were served within about 5 minutes, so not terrible in terms of timing! The beer was excellent with an impressive selection of local brews on tap and some ciders as well for non-beer drinkers. This is a very relaxed, informal place. Utensils are in a container on the table, and customers walk to the register to pay their bill. Great place for a casual and tasty dinner in Franz Josef!

It's not the best asian food, but it's pretty good, especially for where it's located. Decent beer. Portion sizes are absolutely massive- be forewarned. You'll likely want to split a plate with someone unless you're a professional athlete and have just completed a 10 mile hike. I had a lychee martini, which seemed a bit watered down, but was still tasty. Decent beer selection. Hawker rolls are delicious. Good service. Kind people.

Great spot to kick back, grab a drink and have some great food. Personally, I picked from the Asian side of the menu and both were very good (crispy duck buns and dumplings of the day). They have a full bar, full service kitchen and also a counter of sandwiches/pastries/salads to eat in or take away.

As all the other reviews say, this place is the perfect place after a glacier hike! They have a really great selection of beers, food, and desserts. We got the Indonesian Nasi Goreng egg fried rice with prawns, mussel fritters, and calamari, which were all so tasty and flavourful! Not only was the food delicious, the service here was amazing too. We highly recommend this for those who are in Franz Josef and are craving some yummy Asian fusion food!

This place is good for a quick lunch. It's a counter service and they tend to focus on Asian food. Based on the few Thai/Asian food I tried I found this place just ok, but still good given the tiny town we are in. We shared the chicken kebab which is what I liked the most out of what we ordered. I really liked the peanut soya it came with. I ordered the green curry and thought the curry wasn't spicy enough and was a bit light to my taste too, but not bad. My wife went with the duck salad which was also just ok. The duck salad is more of the sweet side rather than the salty side due to the sauce. Finally we ordered the coconut fried banana for dessert. I would recommend skipping this order. It's not sugary enough for the amount of fat we are eating due to frying the banana. The desserts in their counter would be a better choice given that they had many tasty choices.

Got the pork cheek rendeng for dinner last night (make sure they make it to your spiciness level. Ours was too spicy for me!) we also shared a chicken larb salad. It was more like fluffy ground chicken with red onion, lime sauce. Sooo good. Then we stopped in for a snack! They had passionfruit and coconut panna cotta! I got the dessert while the hubby got a beer. I Berry cider was pretty good! Not too sweet.

We heard there was a Maori show with dinner so we booked reservations. To our surprise, we were the only people in the restaurant for the show! It may be because it was a rainy day in the middle of winter in Franz Josef, but we fully enjoyed the food and show! We were able to engage with the Maori singer and dancers and we were essentially serenaded by them as we enjoyed our drinks! The food was delicious as well.. we ordered a Burmese noodle dish with prawn and pork belly dish. We ordered a lemon mint dessert with coconut crackling (cracker) that was an amazing blend of flavors! Needless to say, we got amazing service with delicious food and it's too bad all the other tourists missed out tonight. Come visit this place on Tuesday / Thursday nights for the Maori show and dinner!

We enjoyed the cashew chicken and the Thai beef salad for a mid-afternoon lunch during a weather-induced power outage in the area. Both had fresh ingredients with just the right amount of spicy flavor. The portions were generous and filling. Atmosphere was cozy. Figuring out that we needed to order at the counter was a bit confusing, and gathering details about the drink offerings was a little harder than it needed to be. Overall, I recommend Snakebite as a place to try when visiting Franz Josef. read more

Food was overrated , overall not recommend . The duck soup noodle was full of herb taste and the noodle was undercooked. The pad see ew was bland and not taste anything like it should be .... Very disappointed read more

It was okay. I had to ask what the happy hour deal was. It was very unclear in the menu.. as in nothing. Service was okay. Sit inside or out, your choice. Food was okay. As many Hawker stands as I've been too, there's nothing like this chicken starter. read more

I had the duck noodle soup and it was fantastic. I think it could've made three meals if I wanted to stretch it out. The restaurant itself was very comfortable, the service friendly, and the vibe very low-key. I would definitely eat here again without hesitation. read more
Fun place! Order food & drinks at the bar and find your table. Instructions weren't clear on the process, but I'm a foreigner . I just wanted a snack and beverage so ordered the pork and prawn dumplings and a local IPA. Pretty darn good! read more

Food was incredible. I had the Green Curry with tofu. It was a generous portion and full of vegetables...broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and peas. It was delicious. We were a large party touring the South Island and they handled the group so easily! If you are in Franz Josef in New Zealand ...eat here! read more

I have throughly enjoyed the food/ coffee I have ordered during lunch hours where you are expected to order at the register. However I went in Friday night and was sat at around 6:45. My friend and I say until 7:05 while tables around us were being helped. They were pretty busy, but 20 minutes with no service was a bit much. To comment on the set up and vibe of this restaurant, well decorated but rather small. You will be sharing space with other customers unless you sit outdoors. read more

This place is more of a restaurant with a brewery than a brewery that also serves food. We had the pulled pork Gua Bao and the duck soup, both beautifully cooked (tender meat, not over cooked) and interesting well balanced flavors. Generous portions so we couldn't try more items. The ones going to other tables looked good. Service was fast even though the evening was busy. I also tried one of the half cider-half beer drinks, tasty and knocked down the hoppiness of the beer. We're only here one night or we might have come again. read more

They had a fire in May 2015 and reopened in Nov 2015 as Snakebite Brewery. Our lodge reception recommended it and we decided to have an early dinner as he said it fills up after 7pm. Asian food mostly with some kiwi burgers and the like and we decided to go Asian with one burger. The signature dish, beef cheek rendang was tender and melting in the mouth. Very tasty! Portions were quite big too! Also enjoyed the Tasman Lager and berry cider. Nice decor and atmosphere too. No wonder it's busy at night! read more
Stopped in for a beer but everyone was so nice. I looked at the food menu and at Yelp and stayed for dinner. The beef check Radang was masterful though could have been more spicy for me. Pouring rain on a summer night the staff and provisions restored me! Restored, the word from which Restaurant comes. read more
A hidden gem in the Franz Josef township! A good mix of Asian dishes and also a few Kiwi classics. J and I stopped by for dinner and were pleasantly surprised to find such delicious food in a small tourist town like this. I was impressed with the breadth of the menu - from Chinese to Thai, from Indonesian to Korean and more, the variety was great. - beef cheek rendang: 5 stars. Delicious. I ate up every bite. The beef was very moist and soft. Practically had to lick the bowl clean. - Indonesian nasi goreng fried rice: 5 stars. The satay sauce was delicious. The entire dish was delightful. - side order of roti: 3 stars. Nice and crispy but too thick in my opinion - and the extra thickness therefore made it a bit too dry. There is also a display case full of delicious looking pies and desserts/pastries. I was too full though and didn't get to partake. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch. Place looks slightly like a time capsule from the 1960s in the USA. Red clear plastic chairs, color changing lights, and geometric walls. Had a vegetarian salad with noodles, colorful vegetables and a flavorful dressing. Decent lunch and pleasant staff. Also glasses cases full of take away choices. read more
Well, who would've known I would get to eat a fantastic beef rendang at Franz Josef Glacier? To tell you the truth, we were ready to eat at another restaurant this evening. However, their kitchen was closed so we were turned away. Their loss. We walked by an "American" place at the corner, but we weren't really feeling the menu. Just a bit further along the road, we found Snake Bite. So apparently the chefs here are Thai, Singaporean, and Indonesian. Definitely a good sign when your menu is a mix of Asian and fusion dishes. The Korean beef ribs weren't exactly "Korean" because they lacked the sweetness usually associated with kalbi. Nonetheless, the ribs were flavourful. Their signature dish, the beef rendang, was delicious! Tender, tasty, right amount of heat,... The portion was quite generous which was great because we didn't want to stop eating! I do have to say the mussel fritters didn't completely wow me, they were just okay. The mains were the show stealers! Order the beef rendang!!! read more
This restaurant defies logic. There is no reason why such a great restaurant should be in this beautiful but isolated location. Thankfully however it is. Great selection of brews, although some were not available at that time, but still a great selection. We were not sure at first if we wanted to eat here or elsewhere, but eventually indecision was dealt with and we ordered a calamari salad to share followed by the Salmon and a Thai green curry. Calamari cooked properly, none of that overcooked calamari that so many places seem to produce. But the real stars were the main courses. The salmon was locally caught a few miles north of Franz Josef and was cooked to perfection. The delicate flavour of the salmon was wonderful. The Thai green curry with chicken was a really really great curry. Oh, and did I mention the Thai green curry was great. Right amount of heat with the right amount of coconut milk to take the edge of the heat. Throw in some great service from the one member of staff who took care of everyone of the guests in the restaurant and you have the makings of a great place. Thoroughly recommended. read more

Grab a beer or two here. Free wifi. Vegan friendly. Quite a few vegan options (also have tofu). We tried the green curry with tofu and the vegan burger made from chickpeas and zucchini. Curry had lots of veggies which I appreciated. The food was tasty and we left very full. read more
After long hike up in grand Joseph glacier tour, we grabbed dinner next door. This Asian fusion place was highly recommended by our our guide, he likes the duck. We tried what the waitress recommended. The lamb chop massaman curry with steam rice, is one of the best lamb and beat thai curry I have ever taste. The meat just falls off the bone!!!! Amazing. $31 NZD, but well worth it. The pad thai was tasty and big portion, but the beef slices were chewy and dry.... Don't get the beef. Also we came between 4-6pm, so I got my berry hard cider for $6 instead the normal $8. Very full now, and love the free wifi. Nice seats on the patio :) read more

Didn't expect to find Auckland/Queenstown level craft food out here in the boonies, but absolutely glad we did! Amazing brunch choice before you go hike FJ. And pop back in after to grab one of those $9 donuts. I swear to everything, the filling alone is worth it. read more

Super tasty dinner in a cute little backpacker town. We both ordered off the Asian side of the menu and it was delicious....hIghly recommend
love this little cute place with lots of Asian cuisine. Service was amazing, we had 3 to 4 people helping us. We ordered the duck noodle soup which was quite good with tender meet and the noodles were quite tasty. We also ordered the duck salad which was quite tasty and the beef cheek which was paired perfectly with the rice. Their to go section was also pretty awesome with take away sandwiches and drinks which would be perfect for a hike or a long drive. read more

Waiting for our helicopter flight up to the glacier after getting up at the butt crack of dawn, we needed breakfast somewhere - so came in here for a bite. I went with a flat white and a bagel with cream cheese, salmon, tomato, and sprouts. So - pretty standard stuff, but well executed, price was reasonable. There's not a ton at the glacier (although, more than you might think) so I would totally come back here. You can do bigger "badder for you" breakfasts too, if you feel the need. read more
Sigh. With some strong reviews on yelp and also a recommendation from our hotel, we were looking forward to trying this place. The Pad Thai and the Thai Venison Salad were delicious-venison was cooked to perfection and had an amazing dry rub crust. However, no matter how great the food is, I cannot justify giving this restaurant any more stars as the wait for our food was 50 minutes--no joke! And it wasn't even the weekend. Looking around I saw other diners who had arrived before us also waiting for their food. At least they have free wifi as we were all passing the time on our smartphones. If they would only speed up their food delivery I would readily give more stars. read more

We were a little reluctant at first but we made the plunge, and boy were we glad. The decor is interesting and has a nice vibe. They were playing some alternative rock at first when we came in but they changed to jazz as it got a little busier. We ordered the pad Thai and the fish of the day. The fish of the day was just ok. It tasted good and was well put together, it just wasn't anything to rave over. However, the pad Thai was some of the best pad Thai we've ever had. My girlfriend doesn't always finish meals but she was practically fighting over this one. We decided on the coconut hot chocolate for dessert and were again pleasantly surprised. It almost had a macaroon taste to it. read more

88 Asian fusion restaurant was a nice little surprise in Franz Josef. In the midst of a little tourist town, it is a very reasonably priced restaurant (for NZ anyway). We had the beef cheeks curry as well as the green curry, both were delicious. Also, they have some nice micro brews on tap, definitely try the berry cider. read more

Be sure to check out the deli case AND the menu as the deli case had some awesome Panini options. The fritters were actually 4 XL patties and the wasabi mayo enhances the flavor. Our wasabi mayo was spicy but not hot-very good balance. The pork bao buns had a great, slightly vinegar-ish flavor. The chicken wings were honey-mustard flavor. They do a lively lunch biz but cleared out by 2:00 pm. The micro brew draft selection was good from two-three different breweries. The berry cider was pleasing but I recommend a half-pint as it can be overpoweringly sweet in a large quantity. Can't wait to try their caramel slice! read more
