Smokey Bones is back in a BIG way. I had my reservations about coming back here post-pandemic after how hard restaurants have been hit - particularly after looking at some of the most recent reviews. We had a great experience, terrific service, and bomb food. So good that I forgot to take a picture before we cleaned our plates. Mykisha, our waitress, was super friendly and helpful. My wife and I had our first date at Smokey Bones in Merrillville, IN 19 years ago, so we decided it would be nice to go back, but this is the closest location for us now. We didn't have the same experience as we did 19 years ago. You can tell this location is short handed. There were often times where several people were standing by the front door waiting to be sat. I don't think they even had a person working the front door. At one point, there was a group of people and someone yelled from the back to put everyone on a 20 minute hold. Not a very professional way of running a restaurant. I would be more understanding if everyone was working really hard and there was just nothing else they could do. We sat at the bar and I can tell you for a fact, the bartender wasn't working hard. It took me about 10 minutes to get another drink, because she was towards the back of the bar chatting with a friend. She did walk past me a few times but didn't even look my way. I'm super easy going and wasn't in a hurry, but I really hate having to try to get their attention for something. That is a basic duty of a server. Take care of the people that are going to be tipping you. The food was ok, but could have been so much better. It further confirmed that I must stay away from chain restaurants. We started with fried pickles. They had a good pickle flavor, but there was a pool of grease at the bottom, so we left all the pickles that were on the bottom. My wife had the nachos. They were well done on one side and the cheese was barely melted on the other side. Plus, all of the good ingredients were tossed right in the middle. They needed to spread it out and not skimp on the good stuff. I had the BBQ Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese. It wasn't bad, but it could have been warmer. It also had shredded cheese that wasn't fully melted. I don't think we'll be going back here any time soon. Not when there are SO many good restaurants in Grand Rapids that cost the same price. read more

Do not go to smokey bones. Do not eat at smokey bones. Corporate sent a email announcing all you can eat wings on Thursday. I waited all week. So excited. Waitress says no. I ask her to ask manager. He says no. You are the manager, manage. Smokey bones has been shooting down the tubes fast. I travel for my job. In the past I loved the chain. Now they are horrible. Last time we ordered, they forgot one meal entirely and the chicken was raw. The manager called me and refunded the meal, and begged for a second chance. Tonight I gave them another chance. BIG MISTAKE! meal came without sides, no dressing for the salads, no condiments for the potato, no dressing for the appetizer. How hard is it to put a freaking order together? Especially when you pay this kind of money. Try and call the restaurant and the phone just repeats a message. Kinda pissed. read more

The lunch atmosphere is relaxing. Always good music playing, and/or a sports highlight. the staff always greet you with a smile and a hello asking how your day is going. Kelsey always has my water with lemon ready when i take my seat. The food is prepared fresh and presented well. We went there for dinner during the pandemic. This place was recommended to me by a coworker. Our group included on toddler and 4 adults. As our first time we decided to order The Bone Fire for 4 people. This includes multiple types of meat - smoked sausage, steak, ribs, smoked wings, grilled chicken and pepper and onion along with potato wedges. For appetizers we ordered the traditional parmesan and garlic wings and loaded fries. The loaded fries were amazing!! There were two sauces on them with cheese and bacon and they were delicious. The wings were a bit overcooked and could've used more sauce. The smoked sausage was really really good, the smoked wings were much better than regular wings. The grilled chicken was also very good. The potato wedges were also great with crispy outside and soft center. Even though we ordered for 4 people, there was still plenty left to take home.. The kids menu was pretty standard, we ordered mac n cheese with fries. The service was a little slow. We had to ask for drink multiple times before we got them. They forgot the potato wedges with the dinner and we had to ask them about it. Regardless of the service, I will definitely give this place another try. There were many other options on the menu that I look forward to trying. I would also like the mention that all the sauces on the table were delicious especially the mustard one. read more

Ok, so maybe stopping at a BBQ place for a former vegetarian wasn't ideal...but hear me out. I recently started eating meat again, very slowly. As I scanned the menu I was pleased to see they offered a veggie burger and Mac And Cheese. I ordered a Diet Coke, Mac and Cheese and a side of pork. The Diet Coke (or Pepsi I can't remember which one) and it was flat. I drank one glass and the bartender took my glass and refilled it, while stopping to talk to other patrons and brought me the same glass back. In a non-COVID world I would not have cared, but sadly we are in a COVID world with a resurgence occurring in the Mid West. When she brought the soda back I just set it aside and told her I only intended to drink one glass of soda, I didn't want to be rude. Then my food came, I honestly thought the Mac and Cheese was the same stuff Costco sells in their meal ready area of store. I barely touched the pork, but that's nobody's fault again recovering vegetarian. The Mac and Cheese was good, but nothing outstanding. I think the server maybe thought I wasn't satisfied because I don't think she ever asked if everything was OK. Ordered take out. Got there and waited 20min (my food was sitting ready for me on the table mind you) for some pregnant little girl to finally come and rudely ask me what I wanted. I told her I was there cause I had to pay for my take out and didn't even give me a chance to say my name or nothing, she just whipped around and went back into the kitchen. So I finally just grabbed my bag and walked outside towards my car. OH NOW THEY PAYING ATTENTION THOUGH HUH! So I paid the lady a $50 bill and got $33 back for a dish that was supposed to be $12. Me and my family had the bone fire and it was amazing. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and the bbq wings were Heavily sauced. The steak was to die for and was perfectly cooked.but for me the chicken was the best. The chicken was also perfectly cooked and with some of there were original kc barbecue sauce it was to die for. Overall I would rate this place a 4/5! Friendly staff and prompt upon seating and getting drinks out. I ordered a side Caesar Salad, 10oz Sirloin (Medium), Loaded Mashed Potatoes, and Steamed Broccoli. The salad came out pretty quickly and was evenly dressed. The croutons a bit on the soft side but seemed to be homemade possibly. Still something I would definitely order again. The main course came out within a reasonable time. It came out on a very hot plate which was nice. The steak was cooked perfectly to my liking and was very juicy. The seasoning was awesome, I went with the Steakhouse Butter topping which I'm sure added to the juiciness. It was not overly salted at all which is great. The Loaded Mashed Potatoes were just awesome. Hot and full of flavor. Cheddar cheese, bacon, and chives. The steamed broccoli wasn't anything fancy but was soft and seemed very fresh. This place is the poster child for over price mediocre food. We went there while visiting in Grand Rapids with our family, nothing we had was as expected, I had boneless chicken, which was nothing more than cheap frozen nuggets with some hot sauce poured on them after they were warmed up, even the hamburger was a dried up frozen patty. So, I was hungry after a day of sightseeing and didn't feel like driving very far to get something decent to eat. This place was next door to my hotel and I was hankering for some barbeque. I swung in here early on a Friday evening and was greeted by a really sweet hostess. My server ran over and gave me a menu and was really friendly and helpful. I took a few minutes to scour the menu and noticed that they have a decent variety of menu items, but big and small. Being that I was hungry and didn't want any leftovers I decided on a smaller item instead of a full entrée. I asked my server about the Tacos and she sold me on them when she described them. They seemed right up my alley, and I'm really glad I got them. The tacos came with smoked brisket and other taco fixings, which really came out good. I was surprised as I don't think I've ever had barbeque brisket tacos before. The serving size was spot on and I polished off the whole plate. The only downside is that it didn't come with any sides. Not that I really needed sides but it would have been nice. The server mentioned that there's some kind of rice they serve so I ordered that. The rice was good but not the best. Still tasty and went well with my tacos. Overall I was really happy with my dining experience here. My server really was attentive and walked me through the process as I was udderly exhausted from a day of sightseeing and driving all over Grand Rapids. What a great place to unwind and relax after a tough day of vacationing! Prices were a little steep for my liking, as my bill was $16.00 and change after everything. Have been to SB's in Lansing on several occasions. Our first time at the GR site. I love bbq baby back ribs and ordered a rack today. Very disappointed in the quality. Ribs were tasty and it was a generous portion but VERY tough. Couldn't separate the bones with a fork and regular knife. Ribs were cooked thru so that wasn't the problem. I have eaten baby back ribs at Rolf's, Teds, and Paisly Pig and all three establishments served a superior meal. Also the rest room was dirty and messy.
