This ex-mews have long been converted into a splendid restaurant that can be booked for functions. Admittedly, going there by taxi on a November evening was like paying a visit to the Sleepy Hallow. But once we reached the place, we were in a wonderful atmosphere and an even more marvelous menu. Like in other restaurants and pubs, styled after a particular epoch, book or author, Smithills commemorated the Dickensian characters. The titles of dishes referred one to various novels, so I'd certainly recommend bringing your foreign friend here, as they will appreciate such reverence to British literature. The menu is traditional English food, i.e. various roasts, veg, and apple crumbles with vanilla custard for a dessert, and a good wine list.
