Great deal for an awesome pedicure. $20 for a pedicure, and $25 for nail art. There are so many workers and stations, that I haven't had to wait long after walking-in. The nail art is cute and I often get many compliments. The only negative is that when you are done with your pedicure they make you walk barefoot across the salon to the drying area. Smiley's is my favorite salon on the island. They're not jaw-dropping perfect, but they may be what "as good as it gets" means for standard mani/pedis on Oahu. They do quality work at lower prices than other salons. They're also friendly and don't push services on their customers! They definitely have their factory running at full capacity! As the reviews indicate, Smiley's is very popular which means it can also be very crowded. I usually go first thing when they open (9:00 am) and avoid the crowds. But even when I have gone at peak times, there's usually minimal waiting because they're so efficient. They accept debit cards and cash only, I believe. Parking is metered stalls. read more

My experience.... I went in and asked for a full set of Gel nails. I received a set of acrylic nails done by Victoria. She glued herself to my finger, her hands were shaky, no UV lamp cured my "gel nails", she was very rough with the filing of the nail, (gel nails are very soft and cannot be filed roughly), muttering under her breath, etc.... I was passed on to the owner, and another "nail technician" to finish what I thought was a gel set. I was also told that "gel" nail polish was an additional $20. The owner and other nail technician were kind, however, I probably will not be going back to Smiley Nails. My most recent experience at Smiley's left me very un-smiley. First of all, I came in requesting a Boogie Nights fill. Apparently only one person in their entire 10+ employee army knows how to do Boogie Nights and he also happens to be the boss-man. This meant that my fill kept getting interrupted by him greeting customers, cashing them out, barking orders to the workers, etc. Not fun and took way longer than it should have. Second of all, they don't even have a little color chart to show you what color Boogie Nights powders they offer- all the powders are in a basket on the floor. I was literally squatting down with the boss-man opening each powder trying to find the color I wanted. How professional. Thirdly, the quality of my fill was just plain bad. I don't know if it was because he was distracted or what but my fill was 2 inches thick on some fingers and then 1/4 inch thick on others. No consistency whatsoever. An ADHD kindergartner could have done a better job. I used to like coming here because the techno light show that went on in the water during my pedi entertained me but even that won't bring me back here. this USED to be my favorite place. i've been loyally going to them for over 10years when they used to have just two pedicure chairs and three nail stations. now, they've grown to almost quadruple the size they used to be, which is always great for local businesses. however, i realized that they lack any creativity when it comes to nails. they can do the typical, safe designs but not too much outside of the norm. not to mention, the owner's wife sort of had her head up her a*$ the last time i went there. here's why.... it was mother's day so i made an appointment for (3) pedicures for my grandma, mom, and myself. we arrived at 10:30am (time of our appt) and ended up waiting for about 30 minutes before they had only 2 of the 3 seats available. i let my mom and grandma go first, so i waited for the 3rd seat. shortly after, a third seat opened up for me BUT they gave it to the girl that came after me!!! (say what !?!?!) sooo.......after waiting for another 15 minutes, now a total of 45 minutes, they told me i could go and sit in an available seat. i refused. the owner's wife, karen, told her husband, anthony, she didn't seat me earlier because she wanted the three of us to sit together. to be fair, that was a nice thought, but what's the point if my grandma and mom were done WAY BEFORE i event sat down?!? personally, i would have preferred to get my pedicure than sit with my mom and grandma. i NEEDED a pedicure, not quality time. what she should have done was give me the option instead of ASSUMING what she thought was right (especially since it was stupid). then anthony (owner) proceeds to tell me "well, that's your problem." loud and proud, i announced to the owners (and the whole salon, in fact) that i would NEVER come there again or recommend this place to any one. customer service is the only saving grace a company has and is the sole thing that sets them apart from any of their competitors. when a company has loyal customers for such a long time, that should be treasured since it's very easy for customers to replace them with another company. with that being said, here's some salons that i've tried that have WAY BETTER service and CREATIVE staff that speak ENGLISH, not just understand it: * PURE NAILS (located in Don Quijote, Kaheka St.) * SALON GLITTER (located on Keeaumoku St) * SALON CHERIE (located in the Landmark Waikiki buidling) they're a bit more pricey than smiley's, but at least you'll be treated like a human and be able to design your nails as you see fit. read more

Light colors should be 3 coats! I told her I don't like it but her excuse was my toe nails are dark!! I wanted to change color then try to choose ... she said to me "we're so busy'. I've waited a week to write this review to see how my nails would hold up. I got a french manicure with the gel polish, after being told that it would last longer than regular polish. There are tiny chips on the edges, not too noticeable,YET. My cuticles were taken very good care of, but I did not receive a massage of any kind. I got a pedicure at Smiley's for the first time today and had a pretty good experience. This place has so many mixed and varying reviews but I decided to try it anyway since I was given a gift certificate. At the suggestion of one review, I made an appointment. And at the suggestion of a different review, I requested Mae. She was sweet and did a good job. As for the massage, I think she was being real careful since I am 9 months pregnant which I appreciated. :) I also appreciated the fact that she wasn't pushy and didn't try to "upsell" me. The chair was comfortable and adjusted well for my short legs. I guess it really does depend on who you get. My girlfriends from work & I decided to have a whole spa day last week and started the day by treating ourselves to pedicures. I haven't gotten a pedicure in forever, in fact not since I lived back in NY. My friends picked me up and we decided we would just try & find a place locally in the Kaimuki area. We happened to have an appointment for massages later at a place called Smile so when we saw Smiley Nails we took it as a sign. We walked in without appointments & asked for three pedicures. They immediately told us to go pick colors and got us settled in big massage chairs. My favorite part of getting a pedicure is actually the whole foot cleaning/massage they give you at the beginning. She immediately placed my feet in the warm water & started the process of massaging my legs/feet, cleaning off the old polish and the phenomenal scraping of dead skin [gross I know, but they make sure feet feel so refreshed!]. After she lotion-ed me all up and dried my feet, she got started on my nails. I had picked this hot pink barbie pink to add a little pop to my life. She masterfully did it; I always appreciate watching them - I am so bad about getting it on my skin when I paint my own nails. The woman offered me a flower & while I knew it would probably be a little bit more, I decided to treat myself and told her to go for it - she could do whatever she liked. I assumed she would just do a little flower but she wound up adding these awesome zebra like stripes with a crystal stud at the tip of each. I was so happy she chose to not do the flower - it was girly, modern & edgy. LOVED IT! My whole experience was wonderful & in the end it was about $5 extra for the design. I do find the price a bit high for a pedicure but I have realized that its my mainland background & that its pretty average pricing for the island. Believe me, you'd be amazed at how hard it is to find a nail salon in Honolulu that does good pedicures, that actually last longer than a week, and make cute little flowers to boot. Trust me, I've been to almost every single one in this town and either they suck at making flowers, charge too much, don't know what they're doing (i.e. they use the pumice stone over your nail beds so all your nails crack - HELLO?!!). Okay, so I've only been here once and the time I did they did an okay job, but the design was a little messy. I believe i had some type of floral design and it looked a little sloppy.... the biggest problem was that I got an infection. Right below the cuticles on my skin it started peeling a little and it hurt when i touched it. I believe that might be from some unclean tool or something. I'm not positive, but after that, I never went there again. I used to frequent this place for a pedi a couple of years ago with my bff Val, and always thought they did a pretty good job. Then I moved to San Francisco. And although there were TONS of cheap nail salons to choose from, (and many boasting a price for the pedi at only $14 before tip), I always felt like they did a mediocre job. Because I love foot massages. And sorry, but 45 seconds per foot just does NOT cut it! Today I returned to Smiley Nails, and although the pricetag for the pedi was almost $21 (and the smell of the salon way stronger than I remembered), the massage was INSANELY long and thorough. Lena first massaged with lotion THEN oil THEN a cooling gel. HI, happy feet! And she did an awesome job with my nails, which haven't had a pedi for a long looong time. smiley is my go-to place for a mani pedi. $30 for the combo and they *usually* do an excellent job! i love getting pedicures and can't really afford to go to the fancy places at the frequency i get em, so smiley's prices are ideal. weekdays are pretty mellow and you can walk in in the middle of the day, but if you go on a weekend, you should try to make an appointment. my main complaint with smiley is inconsistency. sometimes i'll get a good massage, sometimes they'll skip it entirely! sometimes my nails are shaped perfectly, sometimes i got home thinking WTF happened. sometimes i won't need another pedi for MONTHS, sometimes i'll need to come back in a few weeks bc the polish is already chipping (though that may be my fault for picking a cheap polish...unlike the more upscale salons, there are many cheap polish choices and not so many of the nicer brands). for the price, i really can't complain too much especially since i go home happy more times than not. they also do nail art for pretty cheap (my friend always gets cute little flowers on her toes and only pays $5) but i usually just get a bright/bold color (of which they have many to choose from!) that stands on its own. read more

I told the lady about the layer of old nail polish still showing thru the new polish, but it seemed like it went trough one of her ears and came out the other I knew she understood me, because I saw the look on her face when I complained about the messy job she did, obviously she didn't do anything about it.. But still had the gut to ask if I would like to add design for only $3 more.. Seriously?! I hadn't had a mani/pedi in a long long time (due to my pake-ness and b/c I'm pretty low maintenance about that kind of thing), but my best friend was getting married so we took her and got all our nails done. I have to say, the service was quick and efficient (although sometimes I felt like a herd of cattle (shuffled around from place to place). The pedi was more "pampering" and relaxing (nice leg massage) than the mani (the girl that was doing mine had to stop several times to take in money). I was desperate for a manicure today and my GF said to try here or A&A Nail Shop. I found some parking in the municipal lot and Smiley's was right there in front of me, like an oasis. I'm almost 6 months preggers too so I didn't want to waddle up and down Waialae Avenue hunting for A&A. I walked in and the lady at the front greeted me, not rudely, but not super "Smiley" either. It wasn't too busy so I got to go right away. I was helped by a nice short-haired lady named Moon. We talked some story about my kids and I showed off my handsome boys to her and the other on-looking techs that weren't helping anyone. Vietnamese girls are so friendly. Anyhoo, Moon was very gentle and gave a great arm and hand massage. She was fast and efficient going through all the steps a manicure goes through and was helpful in suggesting the right color for my nails. She said "too dark, make yellow, scare your kids." Hahaha! True, so I went with a cool and cute pink with glitter overlay. I love it! What a great experience I had there. I know not every time you go it will be the same. That is the case for almost any nail salon but I felt great afterward and even better when I saw the bill was only $12. Fast. Cheap. Great Job. See you again Moon! read more

Unfortunately, I will not go back to Smiley nails, which is a shame because I used to come here often for eye brow waxing. A couple weeks ago I came in and asked for eyebrow wax and they asked me to sit and wait. The place was deserted and not everyone was busy so the workers were just chit chatting. After 10 minutes, I asked how long the wait would be. The girls continued to talk in another language and then told me it would be 45 minutes. 45 minutes?!?!?!? I could not BELIEVE they were going to have me sit there for about an hour to wait for someone to do the wax. Why couldn't they ask me to come back in an hour? I mean, seriously? The other patrons there were also in just as much disbelief as I was that I was sitting there waiting patiently and then it turns out the wait was an hour and they were not going to inform me of that. I just thought this was completely disrespectful. As for nails, I have gotten my nails done here before and there were leftover nail clippings on the towel they were using with me. Gross. But I kept coming back for eye brows because they were so good at that. Well looks like I won't be back here again. Too bad. Worst nail experience I've had in quite some time. My nails were not faded as asked. When I mentioned it they got defensive and did not do anything to correct. The mani is simply a polish change-no lotion, massage, etc. The pedicure was rushed as well. The after the pedi they have u walk barefoot across the floor to sit under the fans across the room (most places put yours shoes back on for you or give you the disposable flip flops) which seemed a little unsanitary and awkward. When I went to pay, they charged me the incorrect amount and then realized the mistake and asked me to pay them 2 dollars they left off in cash- which again was fine but not professional. Lastly, the polish on the toes is already smudged and ruined despite having me walk barefoot dry them... Can't say I will return. read more
