I have never written a Yelp review before, but I do feel compelled to in this case, because Yelp was one of the only resources that I could find to get information about daycare providers in our new neighborhood, Jefferson Park, and I know that other parents in the neighborhood are going to have a similar experience.
As much as I hate to admit it, we did not have a good experience at Smart Child Preschool, and we ended up switching to a different daycare/preschool very close by after only 2 weeks. We were at Smart Child when our kids were 2 3/4 and 15 months old. The facility itself is not a bright and cheery spot. The room where my 2 3/4 year old spent his time is the room where ALL kids are contained during drop off and pick up, so I can imagine that it went through a lot of kid abuse, however, the toys are dilapidated and dirty looking, dress up clothes are full of holes, and the space just generally seems dingy and disorganized. It does not seem like a stimulating environment for young minds. The preschool area and the 15 month - 2 1/2 year old area seemed to be better maintained.
I found a lot of the older teachers to be somewhat condescending, and one of my major complaints is that I felt almost immediately like my (very young) children were just supposed to "conform" with the rules of the place without having a chance to really get used to the way things worked. When we walked in on the first day, a teacher almost immediately berated my two year old for not hanging up his jacket (like we knew where he was supposed to hang it up on our first day). The discipline system in the place seems highly punitive, and it seems like they just hand out time outs instead of attempting to work with the kids to figure out their differences. My children have both been in daycare since they were 12 weeks old. We have experienced a different type of environment that maintains a more positive approach to discipline, and we know that it can work.
We did not feel welcomed on our first day or any subsequent day thereafter. The teachers really do nothing to help integrate the kids into the group when they arrive in the morning. They do nothing to help get the kids out of their coats or boots on or anything. It almost seemed like a chore to just hold my 15 month old as he was crying because he was being dropped off by mommy into a new environment where he didn't know anybody. "Breakfast" is dry cereal on a paper plate (literally Froot Loops one day). And throughout the week, as I was noticing the scribbled on photocopies of coloring that were sitting by my 2 year old's stuff as I picked him up, I started wondering really what kinds of activities that they were doing with him. I asked his teacher after the first Friday, and she couldn't give me a clear answer. Not once did I see any evidence of any craft or learning activity other than mindless coloring.
I know that Smart Child is an inexpensive choice for daytime childcare in the neighborhood, but we have found a much better and comparable option, and I am so glad that we switched. I could not relax the entire time we had our kids at Smart Child. I thought at first that it may have just been the transition, but after two full weeks, I was feeling worse about the place rather than better, and I knew that it was the wrong fit for us. read more
