I have lived in New England for a while but had yet to get established with a good sleep specialist…read morefor my Narcolepsy with Cataplexy and other issues. Dr. Gregory Smull is absolutely phenomenal. He has a very nice bedside manner and is the best Sleep Doctor I have had since I had Dr. Wooten in Cincinnati, OH. He is very knowledgeable regarding Narcolepsy but didn't act like he knew everything, and he clearly has a good grip on the "One size doesn't fit all" when it comes to misunderstood diseases like Narcolepsy. It was worth the 45 minute drive to Derry NH to have my first appointment and he took the time to review all my records and didn't question me when I asked to be put on the medications that I know that work for me. If you have Narcolepsy or think you have a sleeping disorder I would highly recommend you scheduling an initial appointment with him. One last thing, I was most impressed with him because he agreed that I shouldn't need to do another MSLT test. The other doctor I have seen here absolutely would not consider helping me until I had the test and that test in particular is very difficult for me to do. Once you are diagnosed with Narcolepsy it doesn't just suddenly go away, he said. If anything it gets worse. So I am glad that he took the time to try to understand my individual needs and had compassion. His office staff is second to none. Very friendly. I didn't feel like I was just "another patient", and when I called the following day to check on one of my medications they knew me just by my name..

This is a beautiful campus especially in the spring and summer!…read more Taken on those merits alone, this would be a wonderful place to spend a relaxing evening. Unfortunately, this is not guest accommodations; this is a sleep disorder clinic and if you are here then your visit is medical in nature, not for rest and relaxation. More unfortunately, the beautiful campus is where the good ends because the sleep disorder center is lacking, at least in my experiences. I will say that the staff, all of them, seemed to be nice. Which is nice. However, from the very beginning, to what finally became the end, of my sleep apnea diagnosis saga here at BMC was riddled with misinformation which cost me time and caused me frustration. The entire process and procedure of diagnosing sleep apnea, and then treating sleep apnea, was not ever quite correctly described or explained to me by one single person but, rather, pieces of information from various people combined painted the whole story. Luckily, I had the foresight to investigate and research the process myself before beginning it so I knew the things I was hearing and being told were not quite correct and so knew what to expect. One very basic example- after my initial consultation one of the staff, and I was not sure whether she was a nurse or a receptionist or what her role was, told me that the next step was for me to pick up my CPAP machine at a local pharmacy, use it for one month, and then return for evaluation. If you are a CPAP patient then you know very well this isn't the normal procedure followed. In this person's defense, she did call me later that day to correct herself and describe the actual process to me. While I appreciated that, it shouldn't have been necessary. The techs who wired me up for both of the studies were a little, shall we say, nonstandard. Of course, part of their job is to stay up all night every night so maybe that's par for the course but they certainly were not calm, cool, collected and soothing in their bedside natures. That said they got the job done. After beginning CPAP therapy, it's necessary to have annual "compliance reviews". I was told this was required by the insurance companies. When I asked my health insurer about this I was told by more than one representative that they don't care, at all, whether I am "in compliance", meaning using the machine. But I suppose it's good to be monitored by a medical professional. If a patient is found to be in compliance then the prescription is renewed for one year and sent to the medical supply provider. After my second to last compliance appointment here at BMC, the provider I use did not receive my prescription almost one month after my appointment so I called the sleep clinic for clarification. The receptionist informed me that she did not have, and could not provide, any information about my prescription; further, that it was a question which could only be answered by a doctor. OK. So she made me a "telehealth" appointment. When the call came, I asked again about my prescription; the doctor answered that it should have been sent but would confirm that it had been, and then wondered aloud why the receptionist had not been able to assist me with this.... She asked if there was anything else, I replied that there was not, that I was busy, thanked her for the call and disconnected. I was later to learn that our brief conversation had been billed as an actual office visit and, as seems to be standard practice for BMC, I was charged two co-pays, one for the provider and one for a 'facility fee', with my insurance picking up the rest of the $180 tab for what was a conversation lasting several minutes and, as it turned out, a conversation I could have and should have been able to have with the receptionist. On the date of my next compliance check, I answered all of the requisite questions posed and then had a question of my own, whether or not the doctor realized or recognized that patients were being billed for needless appointments? I was respectful and reasonable but forthright and clear regarding my displeasure. Clearly, that was not a conversation the doctor wished to have. The fact is doctors are now expected to bring in money; that's how medicine works in this modern world- doctors are expected to bill, bill, bill. Most of us know medicine is big business. I understand the conversation is distasteful; I don't like the process/policy, but it does seem to be in keeping with the emphasis BMC places upon revenue. The upshot was that I gave her the option of continuing to be my physician or not. I was told to expect a call from the receptionist to schedule my next compliance visit. That call never came. Message received. The doctor who administers my CPAP therapy now is a wealth of information and makes himself available to patients by chat five days a week- at no charge. His emphasis is on providing good patient care.

Ive had several neurologists before Dr. Izzo who kinda tossed their hands up unsure what to do about it. I first saw him about a year and a half ago when he casually informed me that there is a specific medicine for my disease- that apparently many neurologists have never heard of despite it being around for a while. It took six months of fighting my insurance to approve it- something that Izzo and his team had no issue going to bat for me. And even when it was approved coverage- they tried taking the medicine away from me. To which I had to get a lawyer, and once again- Izzo and his team went to bat for me. Writing up several letters and lectures to the insurance to get it through their heads *she needs this medicine to have a chance at life*. Not once did they give up on me. Not once did they come off annoyed or burdened. They worked together to help me, and for the first time in my LIFE I am able to FUNCTION for the most part like a normal person. My disease used to rule my life and my identity, Izzo didn't stand for that and he put his all in to help me get the care and coverage I needed while empathetically checking in with me to make sure i was on the right track. I have been mostly symptom free from Narcolepsy and Cataplexy for a year now. It's hard to find a doctor that understands the challenges of this intense disorder- but Izzo gets it completely. I never feel doubted or scrutinized about the severity of my illness. He just gets it, and now a days that is quite hard to find. He's great. If you want a high integrity neurologist who pays careful attention and constructs the best care plan- go see Izzo. :)

I was mislead about the type of at-home equipment I was eligible for, they RUSH you insanely hard to return the equipment with fear-mongering threats like being charged for 2 sleep studies instead of 1, and the visit I had with the sleep healthcare professional was the most useless medical interaction I've ever had in my entire life. The at-home equipment they mailed me, was CLEARLY used thousands of times, and looked obsolete. The appointment with the healthcare professional was absolutely terrible, unhelpful, and was simply a set-up to get me to book a far more expensive in-person sleep study in a lab. No. Just No.

About a year ago I went to Sleep Medicine Associates as prescribed by my GP. The office staff and…read moredoctor were very nice. I was told that my insurance would not cover a sleep study in the hospital so I should do one at home. I did, and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I started using a cpap machine and was scheduled for a return appointment in a few months to monitor my progress. At the next appointment the doctor suggested an in house sleep study at the Manchester Memorial Hospital. He said that he wanted to "tweak"my treatment and that my insurance company would now cover the cost of the procedure. I asked what the cost for the study was as I have a high deductible that hadn't b been met. He told me that it would be in the $500-$600 range. I figured I could afford the cost to better improve my health so we scheduled it. I had the overnight study and then scheduled an appointment so the doctor could go over the results and "tweak" my treatment. We went over the results and he decided to adjust the airflow on the machine by one setting. I said thats it, thats my" tweak"? Within a week or so I received my bill from the doctor for $575 as expected. A few days later I received a bill from the hospital for $1,289.00. I immediately called the doctors office to express my confusion over this other bill. I explained that I intentionally asked what the cost for the procedure would be and was told $500-$600. She replied, you were billed $575 which is what we quoted. I explained that I wasn't told of the additional charge that the hospital would bill me for. She skirted around the semantics and said there wasn't anything they "could" aka would do. I believe this is a very shady practice of scheduling unnecessary services so the insurance will pay as well as no regard for what the patient has to pay out of pocket. I told them I would not be returning and hope this is a warning to others to beware.
