I brought my two kids here and as usual was worried about what the baby, who is 1 year old, would want to do or try to get into since this is a museum. The very friendly woman at the desk was so encouraging of letting the baby explore and touch everything. This museum is very educational but kids can touch and play with everything. It's not one of those museums where you are constantly reminding your kids not to touch something. There are exhibits representing many different places and cultures, and the kids can play in all of them. There is a Central American kitchen with items stocked in the kitchen that would commonly be found in that region. There is a Japanese tea house, a Parisian cafe, a West African market (my personal favorite as there are so many fruits and vegetables that one wouldn't see here and cards describing what each plant is), a rainforest where you can learn about how chocolate is made and hold and smell a real cocoa pod. Such a cool place. If we lived closer, I'd take the kids every weekend. Still plan on going multiple times a year. It's just such a unique place.

The grounds could use some TLC but the exhibits are great, and short. Plan to spend an hour or so touring both buildings. Visit Cafe Mamie on a sunny day and enjoy some tea in the Vermont hills. The only annoying thing about SVAC is they place too much emphasis on the artists themselves and hardly ever list information on the work being displayed. We left rather annoyed that each gallery lacked information, if it gave any at all, on the thought behind each piece. A hidden Manchester gem to spend a few hours.

We have avoided coming to this place for well over a decade for two reasons: we figured anything…read morelabeled an "experience" was some kind of scam, and the hideous parking structure visible from the road made it look like a recycled failed 1960's tourist attraction. Pity us for our ignorance. The museum is a really outstanding recap of much of the social and natural history of the region, conveyed through a variety of interesting and well-thought-out exhibits. It includes a really cool hike up to a high pond (where you can punt around on provided boats), fabulous views of Blue Mountain Lake from a decent café with great outdoor seating, and a mixture of things to do both indoors and out. It comes off less as an Adirondacks version of Colonial Williamsburg, although there's a touch of that vibe, and more like one of those National Park interpretive centers. There's lots of exhibits and highlights to mention, but the two really unique things to us were the live boat building "exhibition", where you see a true craftsman working on building Adirondack Guide boats (and can talk with him), and the art museum within the museum, which is worth a visit all by itself. The latter isn't just a stodgy collection of old ADK landscapes, there's a whole set of modern acquisitions and some brave programming around them, but also some nice basic exhibits for smaller children (the bits on perspective and lighting, for example, are cool -- we're just sorry we didn't have small kids along with us for the ride). We also enjoyed the large store, which can be accessed without paying admission, and the curated selection of books among all the other gifty stuff. There's a nice toy and kids section if you are looking for rainy day amusements. So, after ignoring this place on the way to hikes and campouts and paddles for years, I'm surprised and delighted to say we'll be back.

The highlight was definitely the baby calves, so be sure to time your visit since that area is only open during certain hours. You can only pet two of the milk cows in the barn, and beyond that there were a few horses, pigs, sheep, and chickens. It felt more like a large petting zoo than a destination worth the admission price. For our family of six, it cost over $100 to visit, which didn't feel like a good value. We have very similar farms in California that are either free or only a few dollars to enter. If you have very young children, it might be worth a visit, but for adults or families with older kids, I wouldn't recommend it.

The entry works pretty smoothly though, and since we had prepaid tickets, they were able to look us up, give us a map and we were parked quickly. I was there specifically for the Thomas Dambo exhibit. He is a Danish sculpture artist known for his giant trolls made out of recycled wood. Each troll is unique and has a name and purpose....to save the Humans and teach them about sustainability. The trails are beautiful in the woods and clearly marked. There was a beautiful section of the forest where an original piece of music was being played from 24 speakers as you followed the trail. An enchanting small lake filled with water lilies was out the back door of the main building. They have a small cafeteria and a nice gift shop.The building was full of interesting exhibits, including a tank with otters.
