Wow! Amazing Views! We rode on such a clear evening so we were able to experience beautiful views of the city. It is a bit pricey at $19 a ticket. The ride allowed us 3 times around and we could catch different views each time. We saw in the past reviews some people went around 4 or 5 times. We of course were hoping for the same experience. Overall, to experience the views from the SkyStar Wheel, we were very happy and would absolutely recommend it to others. It is a slow and steady ride for those like me that are afraid of heights. WARNING. I've tried getting in contact with these people on a number of occasions between Facebook and email about an experience I had. Unfortunately, they scan your ticket while you wait in line, so I guess getting a credit or refund is out of the question if I never actually got on due to their technical issues on March 21. My friend, Whitnee and I, bought tickets to ride the Ferris wheel on March 21st. We arrived around 4:15pm. Things seemed fine while we were waiting, but then the staff was looking concerned and it was noticeable that the people on the wheel were riding for well over 15 min. And at that time people on the wheel were asking to be let off. I was told that it was accidentally reset but it should be okay after that. Shortly after that, they let some off, but then there was working being done on one of the doors of the 3 the attendant said we'd get on They then started working on the door while we were still waiting to be let on. As a result of these two incidents and no transparency from the staff, we didn't feel comfortable getting on the ride. We decided to leave as we didn't want to be stuck or have something happen to the Ferris wheel. Unfortunately, our tickets were already scanned. I understand having off days, and would have loved to try to go again when they aren't having as many issues as they had this day. Came here with out of towners and bought some tickets via Groupon. The tickets from Groupon were a lot cheaper than buying them on the spot. It was a very busy day so we waited about 15-20 minutes before we could board. I found that everything ran smoothly, the employees were kind and had the whole operation down to a science. The view for the most part was spectacular. Our timing was really good because by the time we got on, the sun was starting to set. Went on during an off day and there was no line. Despite the location, price was actually much more reasonable than other ferris wheels I've tried in big cities. I'm not sure if it was because they weren't that many people, but they actually stop our car at the top and gave us at least three revolutions. I did this on a whim with a friend for her birthday. I used my ID for SF resident discount which is 15% off. $18 for regular tix which is steep. Little did I know there's a Groupon deal for even better discount, so check there and it'll be about $15 a tix instead! They do take pictures and you can choose to purchase it or not at the end of the ride. It's a waste that they print them out, but I get their tactics... if you see it physically, you may be more inclined to purchase. On to the view... I think if you're visiting and want to see SF skylines, it's a good point of view. It's about 3 full rounds. We went on a clear day, so it was nice to see. I love sunsets, so I think it would be even more beautiful during sunsets. It's slow enough where motion sickness shouldn't be an issue, but if you're highly sensitive, do be aware. read more

I would recommend visiting this ride, they allow service dogs and strollers if they fit in the 6 person gondola. No outside food or drinks are allowed during the 9-12 minute ride. Meh. I love ferris wheels. And like many, I suppose I bought into the hype when it was announced a few years ago that SkyStar was relocating to Pier 39. Finally got around to trying it. And it's a 1 & done experience for me. The Giant Wheel's about a 10min. flat walk from Pier 39. Tickets as of this writing are $19/per adult (lesser for children and other patron catergories). We lucked out and were aware of the Groupon deal, where a 2 person admission ticket is $28.xx. Thereby saving about $10 off the reg. adult admission for two. But we saw just about everyone in line forking over their cards seemingly unaware of any discount (the attraction only accepts cards for payment, no cash). The Groupon deal's worth it in the end, even if the click-thru sequence to validate the tickets is a little annoying. You get 3--or if you're lucky 4--rotation spins in the wheel. And the ride's over in about 8-10 min. Some of the views I thought would be better, but it was overcast and many of the sightlines were obstructed by various parts of the ride mechanics. Upshot might be to consider riding primarily during clear sunny conditions for optimal enjoyment, idk? Wondering if the original wheel placement or alignment is optimal for sightlines? On the plus side, the ride's really smooth, no herky-jerky movements and such experienced with lesser wheels like at state fairs, etc. By comparison, we actually enjoyed the High Roller Giant Wheel in Las Vegas a lot more. As the ride there's a lot longer, bigger cars, better (clearer) views and you can walk around and eat & drink in the carriage pods, all for about the same price point. Back here at SkyStar, they take your group or individual photo before you board and then have them on display for purchase at the end of the attraction like at Disneyland or other amusement parks. Cute photos with the Golden Gate Bridge background. This package I heard the guy tell another couple was $35. However, they hand you a card with a QR code where you purchase the digital download photos for $25. Most folks, ourselves included, politely declined. Bilingual crew staffing the attraction were really cool guys. In summary and perhaps in repeat, the attraction was cool the 1st time and recommendable overall, but just not one of those things that you'd necessarily wanna do a 2nd time. They don't get your consent to use your photo for AI or even tell you what they're going to do with it. I asked and they just said "it's part of the experience". Excuse me? I would agree w/ majority of the reviews. When I travel I love going on Ferris wheels to enjoy the views. The price of the ticket is $18 per person which I think is steep for a basic and older wheel. Once you purchase tickets they kinda force you to take pictures to sell to you at the end of the ride. It's definitely I nice touch if you are unable to take your own photos. The total ride might be 10-15 min once everyone has boarded. It moves pretty slow and the carts don't move too much so if you are scared of heights or quick to get motion sickness you should be fine. Definitely go on a clear day so you can see Alcatraz, mountains, and a random bridge. read more

Probably some of the nicest views in the city. Fun little ride and well worth your time in SF to do - even if your a tourist just here for a day or two. I loved the views from the SkyStar wheel. You go around and around and around - and if you didn't see something the first time you can have a few more chances. Alcatraz and downtown and fisherman's wharf all can be seen from a different perspective for once. Everything looks better from above I think. It was a colder evening and it wasn't an issue as the cabins are all closed off and little windows are there that you can close if you don't want ventilation. The ride is smooth and very quiet except for the wind noise when you get to the top. Once you close the four little windows it is a little nicer for warmth and noise level. I think this is a must for little kids. They would love it. Adults too but - this is the thing you have to do if little kids are in town. People working here were great. They take your photos as you enter and after you exit there are options to buy prints. They also send you a code to check out online to buy if you want digital. This was set up here for the president I think when he came to visit. I heard the permit was extended for another good while - but if you can I would try this if your around because it isn't a permanent thing. Fisherman's wharf is one of my favorite places to hang. The old museum of arcades and the crab and the sourdough bread. All my favorite things. This wheel adds to the whole experience. read more

I was a little afraid at first to go on the sky star wheel. I'm afraid of heights but the seats were enclosed and didn't rock very much. They told us that if we got scared, we could cross our arms and they would stop and let us off. It wasn't scary at all. The views were amazing and we had such a good time. You could see all of the city, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and Coit tower. We got to go around three times. read more

A nice addition to golden Gate Park to add another activity and experience it from a different angle. You get great views of the park and the surrounding areas of the city, and if you're lucky to enjoy it on a clear day, you'll even see the top of the Golden Gate Bridge. The ride is quick, though not fast. I think we went fully around for 4-5 laps for a total of about 12 minutes. The line on a beautiful summer Sunday afternoon went by super fast too, probably about a 7 minute wait. At $18 per adult it's a little pricey for the duration of the ride, but we ended up getting a groupon so it was only $22 for two of us. For the price of a regular adult ride it wouldn't be worth it to me, however with the groupon price, I'm happy to have experienced it. It isn't something I'd do again, but I am fairly local and spend quite a bit of time in the park already. If you're visiting from far away and want to get a cool vantage point of the park and its surrounding areas, it might be worth a ride! read more

Some people say it's expensive but you get what you pay for. I believe I paid and got my money's worth. Four laps around the world wheel and a view of the city that was absolutely stunning with golden gate park in the foreground. I'm handicapped and I was taken very good care of a young lady named Zoey. When my wife and I come over from east bay to ride the wheel we always enjoy our time aloft. The people that work they're very friendly all of them are. I'm sure that I will be writing it again the next time I come to visit. This place is really good for kids too they love it. Despite being SF residents, we decided to play tourist for the day as an adventurous date. Visiting SkyStar Wheel was on the list of what to visit. The ride has been operating for quite few years now since it was first constructued and we never been on it. So? Why not! I will first start off by saying this is definitely something to experience for the one time. To make it worth while and get your money worth, try to go during Sunset hours (7:00ish in Spring time) if SF weather allows you. Prices: $18+ per adult *Discount price for SF residents and Senior Citizens which I think is only about $3-4 discount. My bf and I bought a ticket for 2 adults and showed propf of SF residency and we paid $32 and some cents. When you buy your ticket, you have up to 6 months to use it!! I found that to be interesting. Upon arrival after buying the tickets, a staff member asks if you would like to take a photo or not as an option. I do believe there is a fee. However, specific prices, not sure? In terms of the ride being secure, I found the ride to feel very safe and secure. The seats were covered with felt material which actually felt comfortable. The pod was spacious. It definitely was not the janky quality of a carnival ferris wheel. Would I go again? Maybe if someone was in town, I wouldn't mind recommending it or taking them. However, to go casually again? There weren't too many people waiting in line but the young woman at the front allowing people to board wasn't filling all the empty cars. The ferris wheel went around and around and each time it stopped, she'd only fill 3 cars leaving the majority of the cars empty. Then we had to wait again and she'd do it again. Then it was my turn to get in but she told me to wait and she let people behind me get on! I had to wait again! I didn't think that was very nice. If there are empty cars, fill them up! The ride, when I finally was able to get on, was fun and the views are great, but they need to run this ride better. read more

What a surprisingly fun experience that we went on a whim via Groupon. Really love the new location now that they've moved to the fisherman wharf area. Great views of both bridges - Golden Gate and Bay Bridge. Great time to view the sunset as you get the presidio hills, Golden Gate Bridge, and some parts of the city. A few notes, you do about 3-4 full rotations and there can be a wait depending on when you go. If you're a SF resident, show proof of residency and you'll get 18% off! There are usually coupons via Groupon and other sites to get discounts if you are not in a rush to do it so keep an eye out. This was a really cool ride!! When I saw they put this up in Golden Gate Park, I immediately put this on my list of things to do. The SkyStar Wheel is pretty big, but once you go to the top in it, man you are up there. When we went, at the top you can hear the wind swirling. It was $18 per person to ride, no cash accepted. Apple Pay is also available. It's located near the De Young Museum and the California Academy Of Science, a very popular area in Golden Gate Park. I can't remember how many times the Wheel went around, maybe 5 times, at a nice steady pace, seemed like plenty to me. Opens at 10am as do the shops on the pier! You can buy tickets at the ticket booth or online and it's about 18.00 per non SF resident and 12.00 per child. It is a great 360 panoramic view and totally worth it to get a glimpse of it all! They let us go about 3 rounds and it was slow enough to enjoy the sights and take as many photos way up high! Exciting for all ages, can seat up to 6 ppl per gondola! You can see pier 39, fisherman wharf, Bay View bridge, Golden gate Bridge, and Alcatraz! Breathe taking experience! 3.5 stars! We found a Groupon and decided to come! Although, there wasn't much of difference with the Groupon and regular admission which is $18. The difference is with the Groupon, you get a bag of chocolate. The entire experience felt short for the amount we paid. There wasn't anyone waiting in line when we arrived so we knew we would be able to watch the sunset on the wheel! Upon entering, your photo is taken and you can buy your photo at the end of the ride. Photos are definitely pricy. About $35 for the entire pack. While in our seat, I thought we would have a great view of the GGB and a nice view of the ocean, but you get a better view of the GGB driving down 19th Ave. For some reason, I thought we would be higher off the ground and would be able to see the bridge. It's pretty small from the top. We went around maybe 6 times before our carriage opened and we were asked to step outside. We came on Black Friday and there wasn't that long of a line. We only waited about 10 minutes which wasn't bad. They take your picture before riding the Ferris Wheel which you can purchase afterwards. Super cute date idea if you're in SF. The whole ride lasts about 12 minutes. ** The following review reflects my experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. ** Criticizing a Ferris wheel seems so wrong unless it represents a public hazard or is constantly stalled, neither of which applies to the spanking new SkyStar Wheel. It's a sturdy piece of machinery from what I can tell, but it does commit one sin. It's boring. This is not a slam against the operation of the wheel itself, which rotates small passenger compartments smoothly in a uniform upright position. No, it's the location that's the culprit as I think it's entirely too isolated in the Music Concourse of Golden Gate Park to fully appreciate. The key appeal of a Ferris wheel is usually related to the changing views with variable degrees of awesomeness to be had with each rotation. That's why iconic wheels like the London Eye and the Seattle Great Wheel are in the thick of the city usually on their busiest waterfronts. All I could see from here was the California Academy of Sciences, the DeYoung, the concourse, and a whole lotta trees. Four rotations to see the same redundant sights just didn't do it for me. I think it would make more sense to place it in a more tourist-friendly area like the Embarcadero or Crissy Field, places where iconic views are more readily available everywhere you turn. Still, for $12, I can't really complain too loudly, but I will likely save my next Ferris wheel experience to another city that understands it's all about "location, location, location."
