Ruth has a studio run out of an ADU of her old home. Instructions were clear on where to park and what to wear and I was concerned that we'd end up with junk/pieces we didn't want due to our complete beginner skill level, but thought we'd enjoy the experience anyway. We did very much enjoy the experience, and even came out with actual usable bowls/mugs! Ruth really guided us in the right direction to ensure we liked the pieces. We purchased a 'Do At Howe Clay Kit' from Skyline Ceramics. It contained clay (which could be glazed before firing), tools to work with clay and glazes. We spent the weekend creating all sorts of pieces including coin holders, a set of rustic dessert plates, and many funky mugs. Then, we returned the painted pieces in the prepared box to Skyline Ceramics, where they will be fired. We have made pieces before with Skyline Ceramics and found the pieces to be very durable and the glaze colors very vibrant. I loved the opportunity to create in the comfort of my own home throughout the weekend. My kids also picked up pieces of clay and sculpted miscellaneous things they needed, such as a toothbrush holder. We found it to be a very enjoyable creative, yet practical, experience. Ruth is wonderful! I first learned about Skyline Ceramics when I received a beautiful plate that my daughter made at preschool with Ruth. Then, we had Ruth do a ceramics project at my 8-year old daughter's birthday party. We had about a dozen kids ranging in age from 4 to 9, and I liked how Ruth encouraged the parents to step back and let the kids do the work. All the samples that Ruth had at the party seemed to have been made by similarly aged children, and I appreciate that the kids didn't have a perfect looking example to try to replicate. Ruth is amazing! I set up a private lesson/ceramics session for my fiancee and I as an early birthday present for her and I could not speak more highly about our time there. Ruth is extremely knowledgeable about the craft and also very patient as we were beginners and just learning the ropes. She was also very kind and flexible in terms of timing as we were running a bit late to our appointment and even ran a few minutes over schedule. I highly recommend her private classes, although be sure to give yourself ample time to make something great! 2 hours barely cut it as I was not able to finish painting my two pieces. I wanted to have a pottery party at home for my daughter's birthday. I contacted Ruth at Skyline Ceramics and she offered lots of different projects that we could do. We chose heart shaped dishes. She brought all the clay, glazes, brushes and tools as well as an assistant. It was really easy for us. She showed the kids how to do the project and then helped them if they needed it. The kids really loved making the dishes. I was happy that there really was no mess but still they cleaned up everything after the kids were done. Two weeks later she contacted me to let me know that they were fired and ready to be picked up at her studio in San Bruno. This was a great party activity and I would definitely do it again. Ruth was great to work with. It was easy and fun. It was $20 per child and well worth it. The dishes were awesome and all the kids loved getting their projects back. read more
