This abstract sculpture is located in the wonderful White River State Park, as part of its outdoor art exhibit. It is in a grass area in front of the Historic Water Plant overlooking the river. You will see it to the left side as you are approaching the Washington Street Bridge (and all the wondeful sculptures there), from the White River Park Entrance towards the zoo. It is one of the few sculpture that are now permanently part of the parks collection. There is a commercial parking lot available as well as a commercial garage to park your vehicle to get a closer look. The sculpture is located deep in the heart of the park, so viewing it from your vehicle while you drive by is not an option.
This sculpture is by John Mishler. It is made of repurposed and recycled welded aluminum and it is 15 feet tall. There is a lot going on with this sculpture, which you may miss if you are not paying attention. So, let's unpack it. The sculpture's round aluminum poles are made of repurposed light poles. When I look at the piece, I see large aluminum posts intertwined as they ascend vertically. Mishler intended the pieces to resemble jet engine trails that are often seen in the sky. And after a second look, I was like yep, I can see that. The final touch of the piece is the top piece of one of the poles that turns with the wind, like a propeller, as it passes through the stationary cut out part of another. I originally thought that this piece was just ok, but giving the backstory and intention, it makes it much more enjoyable and I appreciate it much more.
The sculpture is set in beautiful White River Park and has the river in the background. It is well maintained and landscaped. The sculpture itself is in great shape, especially considering that it was made in 1998. It must really be made with some very durable aluminum.
Well, as with most public art I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 3 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful art in the area to maximize your time and trip. Luckily, there are a lot of other interesting pieces of art in the park to load your itinerary with in addition to all that White River Park has to offer. read more
