Wish I took more pictures of this fantastic garden. I am ecstatic that my husband and I took the…read moretime to walk from our hotel to the English Garden. We brought sandwiches, snacks and water which made for a little picnic. The garden is enormous and beautifully maintained. Wish we had gardens such as this in the USA. I think this may even be bigger than the Central Park in NYC - most certainly safer! We went on a Monday but it was still full of people. From what it seems, it's a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Locals wade into the water and there are even some spots where they surf! I believe there's even a lifeguard in one of the areas. They don't just let anyone surf though and there are some warning signs about its dangers. Hubby and I were able to find a bench in the shade where we just enjoyed the scenery for a while. It was perfect for our jet lag recovery The park is also within walking distance from many other landmarks in Munich, such as The Residence, the Odeonsplatz, Mariensplatz, The Munich Cathedral, among many others.

I kept expecting to see a beautiful flowering manicured English garden. Instead, we walked through…read morewhat looked like Central Park. Locals told us that it was designed by an Englishman to look like an English Park. It was pretty, but it looks like home. It was great for people watching and did enjoy seeing more surfers , and lots of bikers, dogs and walkers. It was a beautiful & sunny 73° & the perfect place to get in well over 10,000 steps here.

It's a bit of a way from the Alstadt, but definitely worth the travel…read more I'm sure there are other public transportation options but I took two tram/train options: 1. You can take the 17 tram (goes through Hauptbahnhof, Nord) and it get you right in front of the canal; or 2. If sticking to the S-bahn is better and the weather is not too bad, you can get off at the Hirschgarten stop, walk a little bit to Hirschgarten, walk through that park (stop for a beer and see the deer if available), walk through a cute residential area north and get to the restaurant side of the museum. Don't expect this to be as epic as Schönbrunn Palace, but Nymphenburg Palace can hold its own. The outdoor space (pool, walkways, park, etc.) are nicely maintained and lovely on a nice day. Actually, just walking around the park is free. If you have less than 30 minutes to go around, you can just walk around the palace/park grounds. The staff is generally polite. If you get the combination pass, you can see the palace, carriage/porcelain museum, and park pavilions. The palace itself is beautiful. The lovely ballroom has a wonderful painting in the ceiling. The room with the portraits of women from all walks to life was interesting and a little surprising that the palace would have a room with that subject. You can cover the palace in about 30-45 minutes. The carriage/porcelain museum is quite interesting, and definitely worth a look. I found myself spending quite a bit of time there, looking at the various porcelain used and the myriad of carriages the royalty used. The pavilions around the park, while interesting, are fairly small and could you skip it unless you have time and are walking around the park anyway. They mostly show the royalty's interest in China and Asia. The bathhouse's bathing area is pretty deep. There is also a small cathedral as well.

What an interesting historical place. Lots to see here. Free parking and free roam of the grounds…read more Pay a $10 euro fee to access the palace although visitors only scratch the surface from the rooms visible to visitors. It's just ginormous and incredibly historic. Cafe on site for refreshments.

Spent a lot of time in Marienplatz. Started two tours from the square. An art walk with Philipp's Munich Tours and a Dachau and Third Reich Combined Tour with Alun Evans Personal Tour Guiding Munich. Both were highly amazing. Highly recommended. Marienplatz can trace its origins trace back to the 12th century, when Henry the Lion, Duke of Bavaria, established it as a key market and gathering place. It sat at the crossroads for trade. It served as a commercial hub where farmers, traders and artisans met to sell their produce, goods and other ware. Marienplatz was named after the Mariensäule, a Marian column that was erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation. The Virgin Mary is revered here as Patrona Bavariae, the Protector of Bavaria. It was felt that Mary helped to spare Munich from destruction during the Thirty Years' War. The column is topped by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon as the Queen of Heaven. The golden statue was originally located in the Frauenkirche. The Mariensäule in Munich was the first column of this type built north of the Alps and inspired the construction of other Marian columns nearby. Loved the visits to the square to see both the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) and the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus). The Glockenspiel in the tower of the New Town Hall was inspired by the tournaments that were held in the square during the Middle Ages. It draws millions of visitors annually. Take the elevator up the tower to get a great view of Munich's Old City. The clock chimes on a schedule. We saw the show at 5 PM. It is quite impressive.

It is a bustling pedestrian zone filled with shops, cafes, & entertaining street musicians. The New Town Hall or Neues Rathaus is a massive neo-Gothic building dominates the north side of the square. Rathaus-Glockenspiel is the famous mechanical clock tower on the New Town Hall. Its 32 moving figures reenact scenes from Munich's history daily at 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM & today at 5:00 PM. The Mariensäule is a golden column dedicated to the Virgin Mary standing right in the middle of the square since 1638. Old Town Hall or Altes Rathaus is a historic Gothic assembly hall located at the eastern end of the square.
