I'm currently on a personal mission to find places that serve yummy cheese platters in Vancouver, which led me to my most recent trip to Six Acres. I love this place. It's right in the heart of Gastown, squished in between two larger restaurants. It's got a small patio with maybe 8-10 tables. Sit on the patio and you'll have one of the best people-watching experiences in Gastown. There is so much going on around this part of town, especially in the summertime, that it makes for great views and entertainment. My gal pal and I opted to sit inside this time around because the patio was full. All the windows and doors were open though, and we sat right next to the window, so it pretty much felt like we were outside. The inside of Six Acres is beautiful. If I had owned a cafe/restaurant, I'd want it to look just like this. Behind the hostess stand there are tables all along their floor-to-ceiling brick wall and a couple other tables in the middle. To the right of the hostess stand is a set of large wooden stairs which take you upstairs to the mezzanine area with more tables and the bathrooms. There are ivy, vines and plants hanging all around the restaurant, which is another extra element that adds to the ambiance. They all serve their menus using old story book covers, so each menu cover is different. We each got their Joie rose and shared the cheese platter, crab burgers and arugula salad. Most of their food are small plate options, which is awesome for sharing so that you can try everything. The cheese plate was awesome. I'm not 100% what the jam was... I think it was Apple jam... was delicious, and paired will with the crackers and Brie. The real winner for me were there crab burgers. They were the perfect size, filling and just so damn good. I'd 100% get them again on my next trip. The service was excellent. My gal pal and I were catching up and talking quite a bit, so it took us a while to order. Our server was super patient with us and made sure to keep topping up our wines. Points from me. The restaurant is small, so you end up sitting rather closely to other tables and can hear everything they're saying. This isn't an issue for me at all because it's a great way to start conversations with someone else. But I can see how this would be annoying for other people. I came for the cheese platters and stayed for the rose and crab cakes. I'll definitely be back for all three in the near future. read more

This is the second time I've been here and im a little conflicted. Both times ive really liked the food, but service has been pretty terrible. The gorgonzola garlic hot pot is rich, warm, cheesy and filling. The sausages have a wonderful snap to them and the pickles are fantastic. However, it took over 10 minutes after we sat down for our server to even bring us water, foreshadowing how the rest of the night would go. I had the Schneiderweisse in a bottle which paired really well with nearly everything on the menu. After ordering, our food arrived promptly although our server was not responsive at all until after our dishes were cleaned and we had tried to wave him down a few times. The desserts sounded good on paper, but the servings were rather small, and the cheesecake didn't have a graham cracker crust, arguably the best part of a cheese cake (fight me). Its not exactly the place to go for a romantic date; small, dark, and a bit loud, its great for some fun with a small group of friends but not so much for just chatting. They have a fantastic beer and drinks selection, and their menu hosts a number of delicious comfort foods. Overall id give this place 4 stars for the food and drink selection, but I've gotta take one off for the service I've received there each time. read more

I'm not sure how or why this new place could have retained the name "Six Acres." The Six Acres that existed up until the pandemic is gone; this place seemingly has nothing to do with the previous business, and is a mainstream place that serves ... Molson Canadian. Enough said. Sad. I'll miss Six Acres. I fear that we're going to get more generic joints in Gastown. Rents are high, yes -- but I would think clientele interested in the neighbourhood would prefer some character, not to mention a good selection of beer. I guess it's the craft breweries in, say, Mount Pleasant that are taking the torch. Sigh. read more

Went here after work with some friends for happy hour and we were not disappointed! They have a good deal on draught beer as well as happy hour food. I tried the popcorn (only $3!) and was actually surprised at how great they made popcorn taste (parmesan, lemon, salt... delicious). My friends got the mini poutine and the cheesecake, which are also must tries in my opinion. Very friendly staff and a great location right in the hear of gas town. We sat out on the patio which was great for an after work beer and some casual people watching. One of their bathrooms didn't work, but no need to fret, I'm sure they will get that sorted out and there was another one there in the mean time anyways! Overall: a good time. read more

My partner and I walk past this restaurant every day on our way to Smarty Pantz Escape Room and have always wanted to stop in and give it a try. Please stay safe and do not visit! We visited Six Acres after having read glowing reviews of the food online. We hoped that this would be our experience, but it was not to be. We never got to try the food due to safety issues. When we arrived, we were seated by a woman with her mask down and her septum piecing visible. We were initially seated downstairs, but found it too drafty so we asked if we could be seated upstairs. We were seated on the upstairs balcony overlooking the entrance. We could see the table we had previously been at was not sanitized before they seated someone else at it. My partner visited the restroom right after we were sat down. When my partner returned from the restroom she was visibly shaken. When in the bathroom she discovered that she had been standing in vomit from a previous visitor to the restroom. She immediately notified our server of the situation and realized that she had the vomit on her shoes and had tracked it through the dining area. A few moments later, our server returned to our table and attempted to get a drink order from us having done nothing to even ensure that others would not attempt to use the washroom. We questioned why she was trying to get a drink order rather than closing down the restroom the server became defensive and stated that she had known about the issue before we entered the restaurant and was going to do something about it soon. The server then went back downstairs, still having done nothing to close off the restroom. We were shocked and decided that this was not a safe place to eat dinner during a pandemic if this was their reaction to a potentially dangerous health situation. We went downstairs and attempted to speak to a manager, who turned out to be the same woman with her mask down rhat had seated us. Instead of taking our concerns seriously she became defensive and gave reasons why they had not closed down the bathroom to ensure the safety of those at the restaurant and saidbhowbshe just became aware of the bathroom and that we were being unreasonable. During this conversation, we noted that her mask was still down below her nose which we mentioned only to have her get angry at us, making us even more concerned about how seriously she takes guest safety. The next day, I attempted to reach the owner and passed along our experiences. As he was not available I left a message and laid out the situation to another manager who sounded concerned and promised to pass along the information to the owner. Today I received a call from the same manager who was on shift the night we were at the restaurant. She did not immediately state that she was the same person, and instead listened to the story again, then identified herself and proceeded to get defensive and turn the situation around on us as guests because we were not wearing masks and saying we are entitled and how we do not understand how hard it is to stay in business in the current climate. I would advise on avoiding this establishment until the management and staff begin to make the health of their guests a priority. read more

We came in here for drinks Friday night. It was probably 30-45 min before closing time for them. We opted to sit outside. They have a cute lil patio. They have these little 2 person wooden tables, with a bench on one side and a stool on the other. There were 3 of us. When we sat down, we tried to push 2 of the lil wooden tables together, and have two people sitting on the bench, and then one on the stool. Host came over to us and told us we couldn't do that. He parted the tables and put a 2nd stool at the end of the table. Uhm, it's 30-45 min before closing and it's not busy. Why can't we sit at a 4 person table with 3 ppl? It was stupid, no one showed up to take the table next to us. We ordered two drinks and called it a night. Bad vibes from the host was a buzz kill. This place was nothing spectacular, but I didn't try the food. Maybe I'll give them another chance when I am in town next time. But as of right now, I am not the fondest of this spot. read more

Got to be honest, i was not impressed with this place. It was a pretty typical pub with mediocre food. The people were nice, mostly. It is a small establishment and you would think they could be a little more attentive to the people there. We had the fries, crab burgers and short ribs. Not really impressed with the quality of food on each item. I guess the best thing was the fries. The burgers were a little dry and over cooked and the short ribs were barely anything to write home about. The beers were great so theres that. What a find. We ate three meals in Vancouver over our 24 hours there and I'm thrilled that we found this place for dinner. I could hang out here multiple nights per week. There are lots of handsome-looking restaurants in Gastown, but this one has personality coming out of its ears. They boast a varied, highly engaging beer list and a menu of elevated versions of comfort foods--popcorn, poutine, macaroni and cheese, for example--in shared-plate format. We ordered a dish called chicken mash, which was essentially two pieces of roasted chicken served atop mashed white beans, with a curlicued sort of green (which my wife later identified as fiddlehead). It tasted great, and we both approved of the substitution of mashed beans for traditional and boring (and fattier) mashed potatoes. We also had a warm beet salad and vegetarian sliders, both of which were very satisfying and modestly original. It was one of those nights when I was tragically torn between many compelling food choices. They have an impressive bottle list, but only three beers on draft. I asked if any were local, and two were, so I targeted those. They were an ESB from Red Racer in Surrey, British Columbia; and Hoparazzi India Pale Lager from Parallel 49 in Vancouver. The third tap that night was a North Coast beer, but of course the taps rotate pretty frequently and I'm happy that I was able to try a couple of local offerings. When you look around, you see menus bound between battered old children's book covers, vintage ice skates hanging from the walls, an assortment of antique typewriters and radios, and other charming bits of miscellany. But the wood, the brick, and the name make it seem kind of rustic and frontier-y. But then again I overheard two separate tables (apparent strangers) strike up a conversation about King Lear and Brideshead Revisited. What kind of a place is this?? Somehow it all works. It's like Zooey Deschanel's Rocky Mountain cabin, if she invited over her young English-professor friends for the weekend and hired a couple of hipsters to cater. Located at the East end of Water St. This place has a wonderful atmosphere! The decor is big windows, brick walls, wooden floors, dark tables and chairs. It has subtle but rich in texture style. To me this is a place for beer. I like to try new things here, but sometimes end up with an old favorite like Sol. There was one occasion I tried their Wreck Beach cocktail, and I was rather impressed. read more

I drink, therefore I am - W C Fields Six Acres is my first choice when meeting with friends for beer and a bite, because I can try something new each visit. The beer list is lengthy and well organized, but I recommend expanding your beverage horizons by ordering from the specials sheet. The nibbles menu offers my particular brand of pub fare; cheese laden and nothing deep fried. If you order the gorgonzola hot pot, ask for extra bread or you'll have to eat half the cheese with a spoon. I quite enjoy the Pancho's Nachos platter or the Sophia Loren for sharing. Overall the menu items are always delicious, frequently sharable, occasionally stingey. Food and drink aside, the real magic of Six Acres are the little touches: the children's book menus, the audio-recordings played in the bathrooms, and the "genuine" celebrity autographed hanging upstairs. I like the general atmosphere of this cozy pub, and the servers are always friendly and non-judgemental. read more

My boyfriend and I were originally heading to Labattoir on Carrall St. (this street is super rejuvenated with food places, btw) but the menu didn't offer many veggie options, and Leo got instantly hooked by the "43 beers and counting" sign outside Six Acres. It was a packed house on a Saturday night with a couple in front of us, but we patiently waited the 25 mins. and scoured the menu - which are the most awesome looking menus I've seen since The Eatery. I opted for the Veggie Sliders ($8.75) since I am always jealous of people who I dine with who get those cute burger patties. The night was in my favour already! And some Green Beans ($6.25) to start which were really simple - garlic butter, basil and pine nuts. Leo went a bit nuts with the Mussels ($14.75), Sweet & Spicy Wings ($10.75) & Classic sliders ($9.25) + the aged cheddar for an extra $1. I was surprised that the mussels were so huge. You can see one in a photo I took (the super dark one). Leo got a treat with the beer selection, though he mentioned none were on tap. The FAT TUG IPA he got was really fat and had 80 IBUs which is apparently pretty high in bitterness. They also had one of his favourite Japanese beers, Hitashino Nesto. I love the decor at this place. They've maximized the space as much as they can (though it still seems small with everyone in it), and everything has a homey touch, from the bookcases to the bill baskets. I'm sure the brick in the place is original too. Our server was great, and the only thing besides the wait that bothered me were people opening the door and holding it open as they asked the host how long the wait was. Thanks for the winter draft, guys. With a nice view of the Gastown street & the Gassy Jack statue, it's definitely a good place to take people from out of town to get that 'historic' feel. Great outdoor patio ambiance right in Gastown, with little touches like an exposed brick interior and a menu bound in a vintage children's book. This place gets 4 stars for location. ambiance, and people watching on the patio, and 3 (or less) for food. Steak and arugula salad with blue cheese, salt and pepper wings (barely any meat here) and poutine (fries, gravy and cheese curd) do partner well with Belgian beer. Food is not particularly remarkable, however. Major Positives: Great ambiance. Great patio spot on a warm night in Gastown and one of the better spots for people watching (again, the patio) in a long list of spots in the neighborhood. Negatives: only 3 actual beers on tap. Everything else is in the bottle or can. Meh. Foodwise, you've got far better options right up the street (L'Abattoir, PiDGiN.) read more

On a summer Thursday night with all of us not being able to decide where the heck we should go have a drink, we ended right in front of Gassy Jack and met up at this place to start the night. When coming for a drink I try to dodge touristy places, unfortunately this is gas town, and in front of a landmark statue no doubt, there is no way this place was not going to be busy. When I got there, my buddy was already waiting for a seat, and it wasn't long until we were seated in the back... upstairs. This place does get packed, no seats on the pretty fair sized patio, which we wanted a spot.. but on a nice day... well good luck unless you are willing to wait. So we ended up walking up the stairs, the place is roomy, noticed tables of 2, 4's, 6's... and even groups of 8 in here, it can get cramped, but at least you have options. We just came here for drinks, but I did order a plate of their House Fries as I was coming from the gym, and running on empty. All of us had a different beer, from dark to light, they will have something you like, I ended up ordering the Phillips Elsinore Pilsner and I'm not really a beer person but this thing was good, I probably should have ordered a bigger size. On this Thursday night, it was busy, but it was to a point where I thought my food would never come, I mean, it was only fries and it did take awhile. I think when I was looking all spaced out is when the waitress came by and assured me my food was coming and the kitchen was slammed. When the food did come.. it was on a big paddle like platter, pretty impressive for $6 from the presentation. It did however satisfy the palate for the night, at the same time while being upstairs in the corner, there was limited service on this night, not much in the words of, "how is everything" really ever came out. I think this may have been an off night, I'm going to give this place a 3.5 on the star rating and I would consider coming back, the menu had a lot of variety, and the beer options were a plenty. read more

Lovely beer pub in Gastown. This was really my only exposure to the Williamsburg of Vancouver (or whatever). It was about 90% women in here, and given the chill and mildly precious nature of the joint, I guess it makes sense. I came here to catch up with a buddy and we waited less than 5 minutes on Friday night, and got a nice round wooden table to boot (I kind of felt bad for hogging it). The beers were great, with a nice balance of Belgian-style Canadian ales, European brews, and hoppier Northwest varieties. For food, I got the Chicken & Mash: pan roasted chicken, white bean mash, green beans, tomatoes, jus. Kind of wish I'd tried the poutine here (no poutine all trip!), but so it goes. The food was tasty, but don't come too hungry--the portions are small to medium. Very nice choice for hanging with friends, though I suppose it would do for a date, too. read more

Apparently I've been living under a rock as I'd never heard of poutine, much less know that it's one of the staple dishes of Canada. After talking to a few locals about where to eat, they mentioned to come here and get some poutine. So here we came.. Very nice set up in here. Almost feels a little speakeasy-ish when you first walk in due to the dimly lit atmosphere and small tables. It's right in the middle of Gastown, thus making it a great place to eat and have drinks before bouncing to other areas. So I got my order of poutine which is French fries topped with gravy and cheese curds. How the hell had I never heard of such a thing? Anyway, it was almost delicious. I say almost because the gravy had just a little too much beer in it for me. If it weren't for that, it could have been perfect. None the less, I wolfed down the dish and had a few drinks to top it off. Overall great experience. read more

Dinner time at Six Acres. We sat upstairs, facing the store front, and a great view for people watching too. Super cozy atmosphere, with a high ceiling and brick lined walls. Their cute menus had me. Children's books rebound? Awesome. We were off to a good start. Lots and lots of beer selection from all over the world, as well as wines, whiskeys, and spirits. I settled with the Zubrowka-vodka flavoured with bison grass, notes of vanilla, coconut & almond,served with lots of ice & pure pressed apple juice...this was a nice sweet drink, almost tasted like fresh apple cider. A great refreshing drink for the summer. Lots of cool sharing food on the menu at very reasonable prices...we chose the Acreage wings-wings marinated in a tangy marinade. Large wings, with a light honey garlic/ teriyaki flavour. Very good. Also got the Grilled Pineapple Nachos-house made tortilla chips, spiced black beans, grilled pineapple,sharp white cheddar & jack cheese. i really enjoyed the addition of pineapple to this. Chips were light and crispy, definitely better than regular tortilla chips. Salsa was homemade, and very fresh. We asked for more sour cream and salsa, and the waitress gave it to us right away. Great service, given it was a busy Saturday night. We weren't pestered too much, and really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, along with the great food and drinks here. We were lucky to snag a seat at this popular bar/restaurant in Gastown. The tap list is awesome, as it only serves Canadian beers, which is exactly what I wanted to drink. We had some bar snacks, mussels and poutine. The mussels were smaller than what we would've preferred, but the poutine was awesome. I know British Columbia isn't exactly known for its poutine as its French brother, but it was good. We sat on the upper level deck, which looked down at the dining space below and outside to the front patio. The place was filled with a younger crowd. Because the place was so busy, the service was pretty slow. We had to wave down our waiter a few times, to get refills on water, order more drinks and cash out. I give this place a 3.5 stars. read more

I've been here several times over the past year, and strongly feel Six Acres is the pick of the bunch in all of the lounges around Gastown. Why? Six acres has a variety of seating ~ small patio, upstairs with view of Gastown, and in-the-action downstairs section ~ something for everyone. The retro style written menu is very cool, but the contents and menu are pure gold. Well rounded, yet unique offerings with nice presentation and portion sizes are better than most other nearby places. I've had (and loved) the poutine, pound of wings, beet salad, and their 'party tray' cheese and sausage board were awesome group pleasers. A nice, and unique addition ~ the cheese and sausage boards and so rare to find on any menu today. Their beer list is thoughtfully planned out, very unique, offering many *local* ales to compliment their menu for perfect pairing. Well done! I loved the Four Winds and Driftwood draft beer, and also the Left Field Little Dry Cider. Happy Hour here starts at 11:30 am thru to 6 pm! Everything about Six Acres is decidedly different and in its own category ~ which is a good thing. Personally, I have always received much faster, and more efficient service here ~trendy and hipster servers that are WAY more service- focused than most restaurant staff. It's always packed in here, prepare to wait for a table. Well worth it and it's always my first pick of Gastown places for a drink and bite. read more

Another terrific heritage joint, naturally in Gastown. Located right by the Grassy Jack statue, it's got seating all around: patio, ground level, and an upper mezzanine-like, with a row of eye candy watching in a balcony-like fashion. On to the food: Poutine: interesting choice of cheese curds, not the squeaky sound when you bite into it, but soft. Menu said shallots on top, but more like finely sliced red onions, still good. Gravy good and not as soggy as I would've liked some other places. Mussels w/ curry sauce, and meatballs were above average, but the clear winner was the gorgonzola hot pot: the roasted garlic dip would embarrass Milestone's, and the toasted baguette also tasted yummy, cut into good-sized pieces to spread this awesome cheese. Didn't try the popcorn but sounded like winners. Easy repeat. Great, friendly service. Extra-small washrooms located upstairs. read more

Came here with some friends on a cold, rainy night and warmed myself up with a couple of their hot toddies, which you get to assemble yourself. We shared the chips and salsa/guacamole, baked mac and cheese, quesadillas, and sliders, which were quite good and helped with the whole soul-warming thing that we were seeking. The cheese and pear plate was good, but unexciting. They play old-time radio shows very loudly in their bathrooms, which is slightly disturbing and yet entertaining at the same time. I almost wanted to stay in there to finish listening to one, but then got to wondering why they were so loud - my guess is that the walls are paper thin and they are trying to hide any sounds that may be coming from the other of the two bathrooms. A wise move on their parts. The place is small with a tiny upstairs and downstairs. They didn't have enough room to seat the 4 of us upstairs, so we were stuck downstairs, and my only complaint about the place is that it was very drafty when the door was opened to the Canadian winter (mild though it is in Vancouver). I would definitely go back, especially for another hot toddy and mac and cheese. Yum. read more

I ventured over to Six Acres at lunch last week because its pictures had been haunting me and beckoned me to visit. The staff and location are great and I am a huge fan of the decor. The lunch and dinner menu are different so if there is something you look forward to having I suggest checking to make sure its served at the time of day you plan to visit. I had wanted to give a few things a try So it wasn't a huge setback but two items I was rather excited about are only served at dinner time. The owner or manager, I'm not sure, was sitting close by and offered to see if we could make one of the later items now for me but as I wanted to try a number of things I was grateful for the offer but happy to try something else. I ended up getting the Beef sliders with fries and my friend got the poutine. I Personally found the sliders a bit sweet and the chipotle sour cream I got for my fries to be very bland. My friend loved his poutine, so much so I did not get to try it. I will be back many more times to try some other items on the menu and will be sure to update my review when I do :) As for now, I reccomend giving this place a try! read more

I was lookimg forward to trying this place out as I've heard good things from friends and see positive reviews in Yelp. I was sadly disappointed. Terrible service from our server. Seemed like she did not care at all, and had to repeat everything again and again for her. Food was so-so. Small portions for the price and we had to go somewhere else after because we were not full and did not want to continue ordering tiny portion food. We got the Mac and Cheese, Lamb Meatballs (which were not hot) and Barley Risotto. Will not be coming back. read more

First time my friends and I tried poutine, and it was really good! A lot of the other food were great too! If you come with a few friends and don't mind sharing, everyone could order a different plate. That way, you get a mix of everything. I definitely recommend the crab mini sliders and the pound o wings! Don't get the steak appetizer though especially if you're used them usually Asian styled. Guys, what's with the bad reviews? We had an AMAZING time!! It's pouring rain outside on a Saturday night, they were full up and we didn't have reservations yet they still managed to find us a table. Service was awesome, Gio is great!! At no point did we feel ignored or made to wait longer than necessary. We had the poutine, veggie sliders, chicken and mash and bison steak. All 5 stars, the chicken and mash was perfect for a rainy day and HOT, so hot I burned my tongue on a potato....which is AWESOME! Hot food is what it's all about I hate receiving room temp dinner. Fantastic service and wonderful decor, it's loud here but who cares, please try it out! read more

I found this place kind of disappointing. It was late at night so last minute dining options were growing scarce and Six Acres was one of the few places still open. The late night menu was rather small and very protein oriented. We ordered some duck roll, which though on the small side came with fresh cilantro and basil leaves, and some mini burgers. The only vegetarian option was French fries--though good, it would have been nice to have had another option. The service was a little inconsistent. While our waitress was pleasant enough, she was the only person responsible for our section so her attention was pretty divided, thus making it difficult to both put in our orders and receive them. For anyone that grew up on countryside food you'll recognise much of the Six Acres menu - sausages, mash, brussels sprouts, beats, wings, barley, cheese etc, but with a hipster twist. The food is good. Homely, but portioned out in a way to encourage tapas eating rather than solo large plates (although if you went true tapas here you'd run up a decent bill). The building is a delight for Vancouver. Very old (the oldest brick building in Vancouver so they say) and narrow with low ceilings upstairs. Giving it a distinctly European vibe. There's an extensive drinks menu on draught and even more by the bottle. Fun good food. Just keep an eye on that tab if you're ordering a lot of plates! read more

It had been a couple years since I was here last, but it was just as satisfying. I'm glad I returned. What drew a friend & I in was the location and an early happy hour. It was after 2pm, but we saw that they offer happy hour 11:30-6pm every day. Not a lot of places do that. They have over 43 types of beer, some bottled/some on tap, and offer a couple at a nice price of $4.50 for happy hour. They also have a good selection of wine, cocktails, whisky and other spirits. As for food, it was very reasonably priced for happy hour & I liked the selection. We ended up sharing the crab sliders with salad. Good flavor and the right texture. I also like the small room with two floors to make for a more cozy setting. I will return. read more

Maybe it was an off night but based on my experience, I'd say go somewhere else. The service was slow and inattentive...I think we were sore by the end of the night after craning our necks trying to find someone to help us with anything. It took forever just to get our first round of drinks and then another long wait to get someone to help us with our food order. Servers would congregate behind the bar and just hang out...on a busy Friday night! Based on previous reviews, I hoped the food would make up for it but I was sadly mistaken. Everything we ordered was subpar and poorly executed. I had just come off a highly restrictive diet and eager to indulge a little, but I wish I could take it all back. Definitely not worth the calories. read more
