On Saturday, April 14, 2012, I attended Sino Tayo. This was held at Arizona State University, at 6:30 pm. My boyfriend, Carlos and I, entered a gymnasium with a small stage, a DJ, and a buffet style food table. Surrounding us were 25 tables decorated in black, red and white. Sino Tayo is an event that Pilipino American Student Association club holds each year to celebrate and teach people about Pilipino culture.
We received tickets from Carlo's mom as a gift. The tickets were originally $12, if you bought them before the event, and they were $15 at the door. The price included the food, drinks, and entertainment for the night. Dinner was to be served at 7:00 PM; however, we didn't end up eating till about 7:20. The dinner was buffet style, and consisted of ten different dishes, such as, white rice, chicken fried rice, orange chicken, pancit, Mongolian beef, and a whole roasted pig, Also lumpia which is like an egg roll. They also provided different sauces to smother or dip your entrees in. My favorite choice of the night was the lumpia, by far the best thing I ate. I had never tried lumpia before, and was hesitant at first, but after the first bite I decided it was my favorite. At the end of the buffet desserts were served, such as flan and ube. Because my boyfriend comes from Pilipino culture, often times his mom has served us different Pilipino desserts. I've never been a big fan of them, but I decided to try them, and I wasn't a fan. However, on the other hand, my boyfriend's sister, as well as the rest of his family really enjoyed each of the desserts.
After dinner, PASA performed a number of dances and songs. They started with the Pilipino National Anthem which sounded beautiful. This was followed by the American National Anthem, which was sung by a Pilipino girl. I was a bit disappointed during the American National Anthem, because the girl singing did not know all of the correct words.
Overall my experience was memorable and enjoyable. I thought the price was fair considering the food, drinks, and entertainment we received throughout the year. The PASA club did a great job putting everything together. I can't wait to experience Sino Tayo again next year! read more
