My family has looked for several years for the perfect, family-friendly ski resort to take our kids; Mostly near Tahoe. We have finally found a great place; not anywhere near Tahoe. We were first told about Silver Star by a neighbor who grew up in nearby Kelowna, BC. He bragged to us about this little small-town-like resort near his hometown that looked like a brightly painted Victorian ski village. It wasn't too big, it wasn't all that crowded, it had a good ski school, and was riddled with side trails and ski bridges to maximize ski-in and ski-out capability for those staying on the mountain. We didn't really get it...until we tagged along with his family two years ago, and saw it for ourselves. Now we're back for a second visit, and I'm proud (and amazed) to be the first one to review it. This is almost an ideal family mountain, especially if you rent a house for several families (like we do), and get the benefits of rotating child care and shared meals. It has a great ski school, plenty of green runs for the kids, but with a good percentage of blue and black runs to make things interesting for the parents. It's also in some sort of magic weather pocket, so snowfall (powder, thank you very much) is very regular throughout the winter. (On our last trip we received a few inches every night). The short lift lines (and the ability to sit down at a restaurant with no wait) were also major pluses for us. And one more plus, at least for me - Canadians are so NICE here it's a joy. The winter staff here is great too - most of them are from Australia, with the reminder from England, Scotland, plus a few Kiwi's. (The resort is Australian-owned). With the Winter Olympics going on right now in Vancouver, it's even more of a special place to be right now. Canadian flags and Pride is on display almost everywhere you go. People are excited, and in this spirit they are even holding family-friendly ski contests on the mountain all week. Time for the nits: - It's a smaller mountain, so if staying here for several days, it can start to feel a little stale. It's a good thing the regular snow makes changes to the conditions. - The shuttle only runs every 30 minutes. Seems like they could cut this time in half for busy periods. -The outdoor ice skating location is too far from the amenities of Main street. But still a great place overall. Granted, for californians like me, it's the extra cost of a plane trip, but I'm happy pay that price for such a great family ski spot (and miss the traffic and crowds of Tahoe). I just wish we could afford to do it more often. ---- Update Feb 2014: We've now completed our 4th family trip to Silver Star. Counting ski days, I also realize I've skied here more than any other spot. So I guess Silver Star has become my "home mountain"...? We're already planning our trip for next year. read more

I had a lot of fun at Silver Star Mountain Resort! Their were quite a few runs and we didn't have to wait too long for lifts. Their tubing experience was also fun, and definitely worth checking out even after skiing for the day. The atmosphere in general was really awesome. Every once in a while they have an event going on, and it's so fun to just walk through the village and check everything out. My biggest complaint was with the main lodge. It was quite small, and when we went the fryers were down so a lot of their food wasn't available for sale. That being said, they had quite a few gluten free options which definitely made me happy! read more

The best place in the Okanagan for skiing. Oft voted the Best Place to Ski in Canada or Western US/ Canada. The mountain is family-oriented ; green, blue, black diamond and double black diamond runs offer the right challenge for all skiers. The younger crowd will enjoy the park features. Even if it hasn't snowed for days, they have a magical way of preserving their fluffy, dry snow. Only 6 hours from Vancouver, a week here can be less expensive than a weekend at Whistler. Lately they have been doing $5 night skiing (that's right, just $5) and $15 for night-skiing lessons. Also $30 afternoon lessons and Costco has a deal for $54 all-day lift ticket. Heck yes! This place rocks. If you're going to rent a house, try to get a place near the village or ski in/out from Comet Express. There are three good bars in the village but we preferred the Saloon. read more

A group of 4 of us went up as we wanted to take some pictures in the Village with our friend who was in costume. We were harassed by staff and finally decided to leave. The attitude and behaviour of the staff was incredibly unprofessional. This was really unfortunate as we had been up to Silver Star before in February and spent the long weekend up there with our friend in costume (we had rented a condo) and had a great time including pictures with staff and even spent an afternoon at Tube Town. We're cancelling our plans to have another ski weekend up there again this winter. And we're telling all of our friends local, from Vancouver, and those in Alberta not to bother with Silver Star and about the treatment we received when we visited this time. read more

Beautiful location BUT prices are not affordable for the locals. Seasons passes are through the roof and so is food and accommodations. The staff can be super rude and snobby. read more

Silver Star Mountain Resort is one of my favorite resorts in BC. We came here for one day in January 2013 as our last resort on a 3 resort road trip and was by far the best of that bunch. The day started out a little cold but then the powder started falling from the sky and it just became pretty awesome conditions on most runs. The day we were there, their were a few lifts weren't open but everything else was lovely to ski. The mountain kind of spreads out from the village to the East and a little bit south and to the backside. At times it can be a little bit flat so be prepared for a little bit of traversing. There is a great wide range of terrain for everyone with plenty to keep every level of rider occupied. If you don't want to do Downhill or want something else to do in an evening there are plenty of other activities including 100km of Cross-country trails and snow shoe trails as well as Ice Skating and Tubing all included in the cost of a downhill pass so its great value for families. There is also Biking in the Summer. It also has a fairly big and very attractively designed pedestrian village with plenty of drinking and food options. Overall, by far a very good family friendly resort that is not super busy and has a lot to offer everyone. read more

I just found out that this resort has Friday and Saturday night skiing for only $10! I cannot wait to head up there this weekend to try it out. I can get my son a lesson (intermediate) for $20 as well. What a super deal! read more

This is from last winter. Silver Star Mountain Resort (Silver Star) is a ski resort located in the Shuswap Highland of the Monashee Mountains, 25km northeast of the city of Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. Season runs from late November to mid-April depending. I'd say this is a good family resort having the groomed runs. I'd say the majority of the runs are intermediate, so it's good place to take your friends who don't ski all that much. Again, this area is known for the Okanagan champagne powder. This makes the resort a vacation destination for families, powder hounds and international tourists alike. read more

Don't believe that having your lift tickets also valid for Big White means you can ski there, unless you have your own transport. The field promotes a trip every Thursday, but it doesn't run (according to booking staff) because they don't get the minimum (15) numbers, and in a catch 22 they don't encourage you to book. The field is too cheap (IMHO) (and financially too marginal according to my source) to run the trip if they don't make a profit. The cost of doing it yourself is prohibitive unless you have 15 or more people in tow. Oddly though the field was happy to blow $1,000 or more on fireworks on Friday night without any promotion that we observed. read more

Best slopes in the Okanagan! The rental shop workers are always excited to help out and the service tecks know what their doing. The best part about Silver Star Resort is that there is a wide selection of easy to difficult runs and the chair lift line is very fast. The Telus Park is lots of fun and has something for all levels! The location is the perfect distance from town, making it easy to make a full day of enjoying all that Silver Star offers. Once the hills close, there's still Tube Town and skating to create memories! read more

My eight year old loved it. The Peanut run was the highlight of his trip, along with the kids snowmobile park and tube park. I got separated from my son and the ski patrol were quick, professional and very well organized. They found him within minutes and skied with him to the comet expressway where I waited with another patroller. I've skied a lot of mountains in BC and Washington with my son and found the training and attitudes of the lifties exemplary. The skiing was incredible, some of the best wide open rollers I've seen. read more
