Silver Lake State Park
Amanda L.

I camped at Silver Lake State Park this past summer and it was delightful! We camped in the part of the campground that is on the opposite side of the road from Silver Lake and the campground spots were a bit smaller than we were accustomed to at other State Parks, but understand that it's probably because this park is one of the more popular, highly trafficked ones given all the activities that can be done here! There were tons of people here with their ATVs/ORVs to climb the dunes, which was something unique! There's a series of small town shops around the Silver Lake area that you can patron at if you want to stay close. Overall, it's a great spot to come to for day trips, but I don't think that I'd ever camp here again. Instead, I'd probably look for a cute AirBNB or something nearby to stay at for a little more space to vibe, but visit the state park for the dunes and hikes! I'd also probably visit here in a non-summer month as well so it's not as many people because the beaches we went to were definitely chock full of people, so much so that we decided to go to a different part of Silver Lake State Park (not the campground area) to lay out by the lake. We didn't try to summit too many of the dunes this time, especially given the hot weather, but know that there's acres upon acres still left to be explored!

Stopped into silver lake sand dunes to check it out for maybe a possible summer activity. I am a big fan of all things motorized so this would be the place for me. The town is definitely shut down because of the off season and I see a bunch of places to rent but scrolling online found they range from a few hundred to a few thousand so it's definitely a trip to plan for if you want to make an adventure out of it.

One more Cool place for a day trip in Michigan. After checking out the light house decided to trek these Sand dunes and it was one hell of a work out under the Sun. It took close to 3hrs trekking almost all the dunes. It was exhausting but fun and the visuals are great. Pros: ------- Amazing Visuals Buggy Rides /Motor Bike rentals Good spot for trekking four-mile Lake Michigan beach, inland Silver Lake, wooded hiking trails, campground with boat launches Visitors may cruise up and over the expansive dunes in their own 4x4s provided they're outfitted with an ORV sticker and a ten-foot orange flag. Alternatively, travelers can rent off-road vehicles specially equipped to handle the unique challenges of driving on sand. The Silver Lake Sand Dunes are the only sand dunes east of the Mississippi River where visitors are allowed to drive private motorized vehicles over the shifting landscape.

Great park with unique dunes that allow people to drive on. I don't know of a place like this anywhere in the region. Positives: -Awesome dunes for people to hike and 4x4 to drive on. We brought our Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and loved it. Negatives: -Campsites are very crowded. Space is at a premium. -Rednecks. Lots and lots of proud, loud, in-your-face rednecks. There were as many Confederate flags as American flags on the Redneckmobiles. I lived in Michigan for ten years and was not aware that Michigan was part of the Confederacy until I went to Silver Lake State Park.

A beautiful view of the state park the off-road vehicle section as probably the only kind of it in the country

Absolutely love this place. It has to be one of the most unique places in the country if not the world. Orv section 500 acres of off road mayhem. Dirt bikes dune buggy four wheelers trucks anything that will go good in sand

So much fun! To the newbies who want to hit the dunes...make sure you have your MI State Park sticker (you can get one for the day or year. I renew mine with my license so I can't think of price). You will also need a flag(ranges from $25+), a trail pass(free), an ORV trail sticker from the dnr($10). You also need a regular ORV sticker(I think $15). You go through a bunch of checkpoints to get I the trail...one checks stickers. Next one checked passes. Next did a seatbelt check. Then we were off! You come up to the test hill. It's lined on both sides with a shit ton of Jeeps and trucks and buggies. If you can make it up this hill, you're good. It's a good time watching people make it or fail it. We spent about 4 hours here...blazing through huge puddles and up dunes. We had our jeep loaded with leftover food from vacation(this was our last stop before home) and had to toss everything...we had smashed cookies, crumbled fresh donuts, and broken eggs from bouncing so much. It almost brought this fat kid to tears to throw all of that good food away. We even watched a van try to be an ORV and it's back sank into a huge puddle and got stuck. Someone had to bail them out. I can't wait to go back!

Beautiful view! Sandy beach and warm water

Nice park. Very friendly staff, clean bathrooms and showers. Beach is clear and sandy. Will diffently stay here again.

This is our families favorite nearby vacation destination. We head up here about 5 times a year to go Off-Roading! It's great - the campground is always clean and the DNR staff is always friendly!!!!

I'm ashamed I've never known about the sand dunes. I Travel often and always proclaim my love for being a Michigander and a Detroiter. But hey I found the sand dunes and the experience was awesome. The area was filled with friendly , nice folks! Some of the best views I've ever scene of Lake Michigan. I was in awe of the area the whole time. I'm so quick to catch a flight to the Caribbean, west coast, east coast ect. when I've never taken the time to explore Michigan. The price of renting a dune buggy is steep. 750. But it's worth it. It's pretty safe at the dunes if u follow directions. You won't need a tutorial everything is very simple... Be safe have fun... Simple. To enter the park uis pretty cheap. Don't remember the price per car. But all u need is a state park pass which is like 10 bucks a year. No alcohol allowed. Family friendly

Here's why to go: 1) Price: Most people have annual passes for $30 or so making it pretty affordable. (It's $9 a day for out-of-state cars to park,) Our camo site was $40 a night and it fit our two tents for four adults and three kids. 2) Space: With all the RVs everywhere it does get crowded, but each camping space is spacious and we didn't feel on top of others. 3) Amenities: The bathrooms were near our site with individual showers. Unlike other camp grounds, the bathrooms are kept very clean. They never smelled and were never dirty. Kudos to the cleaning team for keeping them spotless despite a full camp site. Each camp site comes with a fire pit. 4) Beach: It's a short walk from the camp site with several playgrounds for kids and dunes with benches and places to hang up a hammock. On the beach is a shop with food, fire wood ($6 per fire wood pile) and ice cream. 5) Location: It's a very short walk to the main street of Pentwater with a mini golf course, shops and even coffee shops!

There are several small lakes, one of which has a beach and other activities such as paddle boats. There are two different entrances to the park, which helps spread visitors out on really busy days like weekends. On the Secchia Meadows side, there is a nice pavillon where my friends had their wedding. These people checking me in and telling me safety information are incredibly young! Will they be able to save me and my family if our kayaks flip over and we fall into the lake? Wow! What a beautiful day! But I wonder how often people fall into the lake. I also wonder how deep the lake is. I also wonder if it's possible to be trapped underwater if your kayak flips over. In the end, I decided to kick it on the sandy beach and wave at my family as they happily paddled on the lake. They had a great time kayaking. I had a great time not kayaking. Like Hot Chocolate says: Everyone's a winner, baby. Kayaks are either single-person or double, and we used one of each. There are very few instructions given, which was a little alarming to me. (You mean you just assume we know what we're doing?!) But fortunately, my family knew what they were doing, so they didn't need much instruction to get themselves out on the water. As you paddle around the lake, you pass the Millennium Park beach and splash pad, plus little islands here and there. There is about four miles of shoreline to explore. I was told that the lake was nice and calm, and that it was a pleasant time on the water. We rented kayaks, but Millennium Park Boat Rentals also offers canoes, paddle boats and stand-up paddle boards to rent. Keep in mind that rentals are seasonal -- this place is only open from Memorial Day-ish to Labor Day-ish.

The road to the entrance is full of sand dunes and beaches on Lake Michigan before turning into a wooded area at the actual park. We got to see a Bald Eagle perched upon a tree as we entered the park. The park has several RV camp sites that to me looked to be right on top of each other. They pack them in like sardines but I think that is the norm at these type of places these days. Not sure what the cost is to camp but for non-residents to come in for a day pass it was 11.00 per day. We decided to do the Lost Lake trail which is a loop across a couple islands on Hamlin Lake (yes there are bridges, you don't need to bring your snorkel). The hike was relatively void of people only passing a few along the way. I did see a hand full of people kayaking on the lake and a few more kayaks parked on the bank near the campground. The hike is 2.1 miles long and relatively flat the whole way. I wanted to do the lighthouse trail as well but there wasn't enough time. Great place to get your nature fix via kayak or foot. Not sure I would want to camp here on a weekend though unless you want Billy Bob and Mary Sue's 7 rugrats running around your site screaming.

A Michigan state park tag will not work. Weekends the lot can fill up. In that case you can park for free less than a mile down the road at Coast Guard Park, or even Fire Barn Park for that matter. If you're going to do that, drop off your family and friends along with your beach supplies at the entrance. That way only one of you have to walk back and forth. They have a nice wide asphalt path. Good excersise plus you saved about $8. Park no longer allows dogs, no alcohol either. They have a nice pavillion that sometimes get reserved in the summer. There are grills and picnic tables too, but not many. There are outdoor showers and feet washing stations and a convenient bathroom. But last time I was here, the beach has been extended way out. So if you are on the water with you blanket and umbrella, it is quite a hike to the johns. This is a good family beach too with the playground. Downside to some may be there are no touristy shops that you can walk to like Grand Haven SP. But to me, that is blessing. Not a whole lot of teenagers come here and never been any fights break out like they have at GH. I hope this beach stays how it is and the county doesn't try to commercialize it.

It was a bit windy, but not chilly - although the water was freezing. I personally enjoy an overcast day at the beach, so we packed a picnic and some chairs and just sat and read for a bit. The beach is large, with lots of room to spread out. There's a nice smaller playground, a snack bar with ice cream and hot food, a little store for beach essentials like sunscreen, and super clean bathrooms. The restroom I used was a huge, single stall room with a bench- really nice for changing and probably great if you have little kids. I was impressed by how clean the bathroom was. We walked to the pier and checked out the lighthouse, which was a nice little walk. The Deck is right on the beach and is a great spot for live music, drinks, and food. I'd be curious to see this beach in the peak season - I'm sure it probably gets pretty busy.
