The feature called Silver Gate on the northwest leg of Grand Loop Road was about a quarter mile of white and grey (generously called "silver") 400,000-year old calcium carbonate travertine. There's a short loop-road Turnoff to the west, wide enough to stop and walk or pose photos, as we did :-). (Jul 2026) The USGS says the broken scattered jumble is evidence that it was deposited here by a collapse of hot-spring terraces like those now south of Mammoth. The collapse must have been within the last 15,000 years, after the most recent ice age, or it would have been cleared by glaciers back then. We saw that some called these formations Hoodoos, based on the Paiute word oo'doo, in a flat unaccented tone, with an extra-long second syllable: "oo-doooo". There are old stories in areas far south of here of people turned to stone oo'doo by Coyote, but none of the rocks that we saw near the road have the definitive irregular oo'doo tower shape with wider sections above narrower more-eroded softer sections. This area seems more like the result of landslides, where oo'doo in Bryce Canyon UT look like erosion. read more
