This diner was recommended to me by the hotel front desk. This is a farm to table diner, all locally sourced. You can also order the entire menu any time of the day! The service was friendly, the food was delicious and served promptly. I ordered the loaded fries on the appetizer menu- loaded with bacon, fresh melted shredded cheese and Old Bay- with a ranch dressing to dip in, IT WAS DELICIOUS!! 4 stars for the food and servers, 2 stars for the hostesses downstairs. Pretty good selection of food and drinks, generous portions, and plenty of seating. Servers have been fine, however, I would like to suggest to management that they retrain their hostesses. I have been several times, and some of them have been rude and acted like I was bothering them to ask for a table. They also need to be better at clearing up the confusion of the upstairs vs downstairs sections. One time, I walked in asking for a table for two, but the hostess asked me to go upstairs which was incorrect, given that I just wanted a seat at the Diner which is downstairs. Another time, I made reservations (not realizing that the reservations are for Silver Social upstairs). She looked at me with an annoyed expression on her face and just told me to go upstairs but did not explain why. I'm sure I'm not the first person to have made that mistake, and I was confused, but before I could ask why, she just turned her attention to something else (maybe her phone or the screen in front of her). After talking to the hostess upstairs, I canceled my reservations and decided to go back downstairs to ask if I could get a table downstairs, and she replied after what felt like 20 seconds of first staring at me blankly, and quietly said, "it'll be a 25 minute wait." This place is around the corner from my house so I've been a few times and have also ordered takeout and every time there has been something wrong with the food. Missing items, undercooked items, absurdly oversalted items (and I'm no fan of low salt), or just plain not good items. Even their flavor pairings are head scratching. Why do pies or french toast need a standard extra caramel swirl? Why does the club sandwich have ham and mozzarella when it's supposed to be just the turkey and bacon? The place itself is nice. And the service is nice (except the to-go which is usually slower than promised and prone to mixups). What's really incredible to me is how overrated it is. I think 3 stars is as defensible a rating as 2 stars. I'd rate it 2.5 if I could. Even someone rating 3 and saying it's 3.5 would be defensible. But 4 or 5? No way. Not even the points system they use works! This is no dig at the company's capacity for good food. I've been to their Silver Brasserie and it is so much better. So this review is really a plea to change this Navy Yard location to that concept, because, as it stands, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. read more

Had a terrible experience. Silver diner started in the month of October a special promotion where you can get an appetizer and two meals at a promotional price. Although nothing is mentioned on the promotion, after we signed up for it, we were soon informed by the manager that we were not able to use it until our next visit. OK, not a big deal. After our gracious waitress confirmed we still wanted our order, we waited... and waited... and waited. The manager came back and told me that meal that I ordered was no longer available and so I re-ordered. And we waited... Our waitress brought us another round of drinks and said she would check on our appetizer and meals. A total time of 45 minutes went by we didn't receive an appetizer, pre-dishes, nor meals. I went to the manager and asked for the bill so I could pay for our drinks and to have him cancel our meal order because of the extensive amount of time. He tried to insist that our appetizer was in for only 18 minutes and that he could try to expedite our order. I told him that it wasn't 18 minutes and that I wasn't interested. Overall, the manager did not do a good job; just kept coming up with excuses to why they had poor service. Not gonna be in a big hurry to go back. Even though we qualify for the promotion, they can keep it. read more

Food was excellent - literally can not make a bad choice! My husband loved the shrimp and grits. I had the Apple Pie stuffed French toast....scrumptious . Our daughter had the Oaxaca and said it was very very good. AND - they have grape juice!! No one ever has grape juice! We also had the guava mint ginger ale - which was fabulous. Not only will we back...it's now one of our top 3 breakfast choices on DC! Our waiter was very nice, knew the menu and had great suggestions - made the experience that much nicer. Located right outside Nationals Park in the ballpark district, the Silver Diner is a perfect spot to grab some grub before you watch the Nationals lose a game. Our server, Gio, was friendly and accommodated to all of our tables requests. Orders all came out perfect, and the food was perfect. My only warning to you is this place is $$$. This is the best diner in town. The burger is delicious along with the apple pie. It is the classic American taste which I love. The service was really great along with the location across the nationals stadium. Parking is just hard to find around the area. They have other locations in the DMV area and I am looking forward to go to the one in Glebe road. I recently visited Washington DC and a friend suggested we go here. The establishment was new and I was very impressed with the food as well as the service. We arrived in the mid morning hours and the hostess was very accommodating. At the table we decided to order lunch items. Even though the restaurant was not crowded, our waitress was extremely hospitable and attentive. There was outdoor seating as well but we chose to sit inside at a well-lit, natural light table. The food was so fresh and simply delicious. I ordered a Greek Salad and Hummus plate that came with a warmed pita bread and my friend ordered the same with Salmon on top. I came here a few days ago for dinner and the whole experience was wonderful. We came in and were immediately seated. It had a classic diner vibe so if you like that, you won't be let down! We were quickly greeted by our server, who was honestly the highlight of our night. I believe the young man's name is Sheron (sorry if I'm spelling it incorrectly!). He was simply lovely! He came over with the menus and took our drink orders. My friend and I took a while to order but he was so sweet and didn't rush us. We got the Chipotle Salmon and Shrimp entree and the Lumberjack Breakfast with the veggie sausage and tempeh bacon. The salmon and shrimp were excellent! It was juicy and flavorful. The mashed potatoes, the asparagus, the sauce, everything worked well together and it was just overall amazing. The breakfast was okay. Can't go wrong with silver dollar pancakes and home fry. The veggie meats left something to be desired. The tempeh had a weird flavor and the sausage was eh. I don't think I'd get the veggie meats again. But everything else was great! For dessert, we got the bread pudding, which Sheron said was his favorite, so we knew we made the right choice! We thought it was going to come warm so was ever-so slightly disappointed when it didn't, but all the flavors were incredible, and how can you go wrong with vanilla ice cream? It was a great end to a great meal. A little more about Sheron, who again was the highlight of our night. He was patiently waiting for us and answered any and all questions we had about the menu. At one point, while waiting for our food, we were on our phones. He came over and started making conversation with us. I don't like using my phone much when I'm out with friends but sometimes I slip up, so it was very charming and much appreciated that Sheron felt the same and came to talk to us. We talked about the book he was reading, some shows we like, and other random stuff. It was very sweet and left a warm impression. The next day, we ran into him on the metro! I didn't recognize him at first but he yelled out to us, (paraphrasing): "hey, I was your server the other night! Nice to see you, have a good night!" We couldn't believe he remembered us! The staff is friendly and knowledgable and you can really tell they enjoy their work environment. This is a great place to get a fair priced meal, or socialize with friends at their upstairs bar. Called to place the order to pick up and the female who answered was about to "get it" then I remembered "never be nasty to the people fixing your food even if they're nasty to you." So I swallowed my smack talk and pleasantly gave my order verbally this time. All that to get back to our hotel and have a meal that wasn't worth even a tenth of the amount of trouble gone through to get. Not sure where quality and customer service has gone. If anyone see them please tell them the sane consumers with rational expectations miss them terribly. SIlver Diner is almost exclusively a suburban chain resto that has an allergy to urban centers (that is...cities). So I was a bit shocked (and happy) to learn they would be opening a location in DC. I mean, much of DC has been remade to feel like Clarendon or Fairfax these days anyway so why not have a Silver Diner? But after visiting, I left disappointed. No problem with the service. And the food was as one whose been to any other Silver Diner would expect except for one glaring problem. I specifically came here for the Belgian waffles that they are known for. But Guess what...they don't have them! Seems they didn't leave any space in the kitchen for a simple waffle iron (at least that's what I was told). And this Silver Diner didn't see fit to include an actual counter space like any other real diner (or even a real Silver Diner). Yes, I am aware of the "cool kid" bar scene upstairs that is supposed to open soon. But that's not the same as being able to plop in, grab a counter seat, have a quick meal and be out. I'm not sure why the corporate heads would abandon what I've always felt was a strict policy to never locate in an urban center, only to do so and not offer the same experience that one would find anywhere else. I suppose they figured the bar scene would be the consolation prize?? But if I can't get waffles, and I can't get a counter seat, and the only other thing I can get is the same chain restaurant food that I can get anywhere else in Navy Yard, then there's no real reason for me to come back. read more

The best analogy for silver diner is - imagine going to the grocery store, buying frozen food and heating it up yourself. The menu is large but there's nothing appealing about this place.
