how friggin cool! we were driving up the 215 en route to the grand canyon..hit a ton of traffic and we rerouted ourselves onto the 60...which led us to route 66...along this route there were many interesting sights... this shoe fence blew my mind! it was exactly what the name says...fences with shoe's hung from it...and a PO box. it's a must see roadside attraction

Here you are driving to Arizona along the 62 and BAM, what in the heck did you just see?!? You rub your eyes and slow down, Seriously, is this where Imelda Marcos dumped all of her shoes before her conviction? On the south side of CA 62 between the intersection with CA 177 and US Hwy 95 in Rice, CA is a shoe fence tribute of sorts that has grown over the years. According to legend, it was customary for travelers to hang an old shoe on a tree's branches in this area when traveling to and from the Colorado River. In 2003, the tree burned to the ground in a suspicious fire, after which a 'shoe garden' replaced it; a fence on which people hang shoes instead. Now the shoes have taken over not only the fence but an entire lot of land. People come from all over the world and leave things, many with notes or memorials. There are so many shoes...and boots, and bras, and other oddities! This shoe fence blows any shoe tree away. If you are panning a visit this way, be sure to check it out and don't forget to bring a shoe or two too (and a sharpie to sign your name).

    Shoes everywhere...

Meh. It's a roadside trash heap. Not much of a "sculpture". Simply an oddity along a long desert road. It made a good distraction tho.

It's secluded (VERY secluded), clean, has toilets and a water pump (not to be trusted for drinking), and the surrounding area is well-preserved nature. Aside from ancient petroglyphs and an abandoned miner's cabin nearby, there is very little trace of civilization, which is what I look for in camping because otherwise it just feels a bit like run-of-the-mill homelessness. The 8 miles from the highway to get to the oasis may not seem like much, but take it easy on the sharp rocks. We made the trek with a Honda Fit and had no problems, but needed more patience than you might be prepared for when you're so close but still so far from setting up camp after a long drive (I assume it will have been a long drive from wherever you're originating because it's in the middle of literal nowhere). So by all means, camp in Corn Springs, enjoy the gigantic starry sky at night, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and don't get killed (because come on, it seems like a place where getting killed wouldn't be a huge surprise)!

In order to properly prep the space, discarded, half broken shovels were employed and a makeshift pulley system of Home Depot buckets was instated to lift out the sand. The truck was repurposed as lodging for a week, the closest toilet was a 5-minute drive away, and all involved went without showers. This was well worth it for the final result.   Visitors must climb a staircase to the top of the tank (roughly 15 ft), where there is a ladder to take them back down, into the structure. Once inside, amplified sound reverberation accompanies two series of artistically rendered female faces.  Faces are captured in a variety of freeze frames and combined to create motion, inspired by the work of photographer Eadweard Muybridge.    Each individual face embodies a specific emotion tied to a meaningful moment when Angelina trusted her intuition, an inherent sense often ignored by society. The subtle interconnectedness of these moments creates a sense of "magic" in its movement as each form contributes to the natural flow of the piece. Her use of totem animals continues through the incorporation of raven and rattlesnake skulls.   Faces sit atop a ghostwritten blend of Eastern/Western writing styles by Ease One. These hidden words form the lyrics to Society by Jerry Hannan and Eddie Vedder.   It's a mystery to me We have a greed with which we have agreed You think you have to want more than you need Until you have it all you won't be free   Society, you're a crazy breed I hope you're not lonely without me   This piece uses a limited palette to subtly unify elements of figuration, lettering and graf futurism in a sophisticated, stylized manner. The background is of latex paint, the rest is of spray paint.

I especially enjoy it when they know nothing about Oakland and then they get up there and are surprised. It is a small compact two block town; of the residence and employees of all the little gift shops. I've always been very friendly and helpful. They are always welcoming. There are meals and snacks to be bought while visiting. Oh and of course, I forgot the gun fight acting in the street. Out of all the times we've been there there's only been one time we have not seen a donkey. We just went this week and we have seen more donkeys this time that we have ever seen there including about 20 welcoming us into town right on the road as we entered You want to visit this town at least once not a bad drive there either.

We spent time exploring the Oatman Jail and the Oatman Mine, both of which were really interesting and added to the town's old-west history. Of course, the highlight was making friends with the many donkeys roaming the streets--they are everywhere and make the visit even more special. The shops, people, and overall atmosphere were welcoming and unique, with something interesting around every corner. Oatman has a way of slowing you down and making you want to take it all in. On our way back home to Vegas, we took Route 66, and the drive was absolutely beautiful. The scenery alone made the trip worth it. If you're looking for a fun day trip, love history, or just want a unique experience, Oatman is definitely worth the visit. We'll absolutely be back!

You won't find people dwelling here. This is a home for discarded toys, called "smalls." In this roadside "community for the small," abandoned toys gain new lives and identities. Sunvale Village is a community for the small, is an actual place, established in May 2017. Each inhabitant has adopted a new identity and many have changed their name to reflect their new philosophies of life. The site-specific installation of Sunvale Village is a playful commentary on significant contemporary issues such as the environment, gentrification of communities and ownership, and politics. Individual sculptural pieces are assembled with mixed media junk, all materials scavenged from abandoned refuse or illegal dump sites. The characters of Sunvale Village have also been recovered from the desert, toys left behind and are play companions in the ongoing story. As of August 2020, there are over 90 smalls living in the village. And they even have their own fight song: "We, a small community of diverse and little creatures, hereby declare our united stance on the significance of small. Let it be known, though our stature is slight, our concepts and actions are no less important than others. From here on, the small will be considered as having a valuable role within the laws of nature, and vital to nature's continuum". "We, as a small community will celebrate the minutiae, the micro, the humble, and the things often overlooked, ignored or considered less important. We will stand united against the over-inflated, the bombastic, the supersized, and situations that are unfair in disproportional largeness". One of the most bizarre roadsides you may ever find. An A-OK seems to fit them best. Don't go out of your way, but I would say don't drive by either. I added this listing after arriving home, so the locator may be off.
