We're new in town, but we've been to Shirley's before. Our daughter and son-in-law have lived in Omaha for 10yrs. +. So we know that the place is popular and busy on weekends. And we are excited that it's near our new home. Caveat: the food is usually great. We ordered Cobb salad, french toast, and a side of scrambled eggs. 40min wait. Wrong dressing Cold eggs, not what I expect as scrambled. These were dty, thin ribbons. Whipped cream was canned type or cool whip (couldn't tell). Still waiting for water refill at 55mins Today, 08/09/25, we hit the place at 1:00. The crowd change over was happening so we knew the wait wouldn't be too long. Strike 1: the young man at the welcome station knew the the two guys that arrived after we did. He bro sat them before us. Whatever. I guess if you're not a regular yet, you're 2nd class? Our server, who arrived 10 mins after we sat down, was very sweet and apologized for the wait. Apparently we had been seated at a table that the staff wasn't sure who was servicing it. Strike 2: We were, indeed, at a 'forgotten table', and watched as 2 tables seated after us we're able to order and have their food delivered before we were asked what we'd like. Waters sat drained waiting for refills. Strike 3: 30+ mins later, just as Bill said we should leave, our, food arrived. Incorrect dressing for Bill's salad and, although the plate was warm, the scrambled eggs were actually chilly on top. Promised water pitcher never arrived. New server. Lots of reasons: short staffed, new cook not getting it done... She brought me warm eggs, filled Bill's water, comped the salad, and apologized again. Our first server was a sweet, young gal who met with our frustration and had probably been trying her best. She didn't return after she's had dropped off our food. We tipped her 30%. Wished I could've given her a hug and told her she hadn't done anything wrong. I know places have off days. Today, Shirley's was off. Way off. We've loved eating here before here this summer. We'll give it another chance because we know how usually operates. read more

Down to earth family oriented diner with homemade dishes. The reuben sandwiches are terrific and filling. The homemade onion rings were huge. The Monte Cristo sandwich was a work of art literally. We went on a holiday and they were extremely busy. However, they have everything down to a science and are extremely efficient, so we didn't have to wait very long. The service was excellent, all the staff seemed very seasoned and professional, while also being warm and friendly. I had the Reuben sandwich with a side of coleslaw; both were absolutely delicious! Had a great Boxing Day brunch at Shirley's (with everyone else in town, feels like). But this was a great spot to stop at en route home from the REI coop and really hit the spot. Note: when they say "double burger" here they literally mean "the size of two reasonably sized regular burgers" (not like other places where you have to order two burgers to get what you might make for yourself at home). The breakfast burrito (hand in picture to show relative size) was perfect, with eggs, perfect pulled pork, cheese, tots, amazing avocados, and plenty of sauce. I did myself a favor and cut it in half because while I could easily have eaten half, I also knew I shouldn't. Definitely worth coming back next time we're in the area! A quick breakfast before I drive across Nebraska. Stopped at Shirley's because Yelp showed it was on the way to the freeway. Followed a family in, and saw a teenage son give his Mom a kiss on the out. That's a good start, almost like home. Turns out she was my cheerful server. Just ordered a veggie omelette with fruit. Came out fast and hot. Very good presentation - strange thing to notice at a diner, but there it is. Omelette is hot, English muffins look good. Taste is really good. Ok it just breakfast but just really good start to the day. My iced tea never went dry, the conversations around me were quiet and seemed pleasant, just a nice place that I enjoyed. The restaurant does have a modern style and the servers are teenagers and high schoolers, however , they were super nice and polite. My friends and I went to Shirley's Diner for dinner and were impressed. The inside isn't very big, but has lots of seating. The place is decorated with old memorabilia, so definitely has the feel of a diner. The waitress was amazing, and helped get our food for us quickly. I tried the western omelette and got a side of gluten free bread, which I was happy they had as an option. Everything was amazing and covered in the right amount of sauce. The omelette was full of pulled pork and definitely went well with the chipotle cream and cheese on top. I definitely recommend this restaurant for some well made comfort food! read more

My friend said this was one of Omaha's oldest and most popular diners. I can see why. They serve old school down home diner recipes that will fill you up and possibly take a year or two off of your life. The prices are reasonable, too. They don't short you on serving sizes but food wasn't the best. Food was very average with nothing that blew me away. Gravy lacked flavor and seasoning and was very bland. The biscuit was a little disappointing. Very dry and hard to chew. Only upside in my opinion was the serving sizes for the relatively cheap costs. My husband found this place on the way to the zoo (so I didn't get hangry)..... WIN!!! We were seated promptly, service was super fast all around! The menu has classic breakfast choices but also some unique items such as the Tenderloin biscuit and gravy (what we ordered). Sooo good! While we thought most of the food was average, the hash browns topped with sausage gravy were the second-best thing I tried on my road trip, just short of the Rocket Pig sandwich at Joe's Kansas City Bar-Be-Que. Honestly, I don't have a good answer for the following question: Why don't ALL restaurants serve hash browns topped with sausage gravy? The service was fast, the serving sizes were massive, and the prices were fair. The other breakfast staples did the trick: pancakes were good, eggs were good, etc. But the hash browns were the standout. The other thing worth noting: the cheese "frenchy." I tried it, because I was told that in Nebraska, you've gotta try the frenchy. I thought Shirley's did a good one, but I'm not sure it was something I need to send people to Omaha to try. It's not like a beef sandwich in Chicago, which is distinct and generally amazing everywhere I go. I think the frenchy is an acquired taste. In theory, it should be amazing--basically a grilled-cheese sandwich corn flaked on the outside. But in practice, I thought, yeah, alright, cool, but I am not seeing the allure after my admittedly small sample size of one frenchy. The workers were standing around in groups, glued to their phones, completely ignoring customers, even when we were standing right in front of them waiting to order. On top of that, they were openly talking badly about customers, making it clear they have zero respect for the people keeping their business running. The service was beyond slow. I waited an unreasonably long time to be seated as 4 other parties were seated before us and our food since "the system" didn't get our order inputted. As if that wasn't bad enough, the hygiene in this place is disgusting. Employees who clearly don't care about sanitation. I saw one worker wipe their nose and then immediately handle food without washing their hands. Absolutely revolting. This place is a joke. A true true Omaha classic breakfast spot. While newer and more trendy places have popped up, one thing you can count on is Shirley's Diner always delivering the hot "small town" diner vibes you maybe missing. I stopped in with my parents for breakfast the other day and, no offense to them, but they can be picky, and share their reviews via verbally, a loud for everyone to hear. And, lucky for me that day, they were SO complimentary, so embarrassment avoided, whew. The steak and eggs hit the spot. Not too greasy, too dry, chewy or tough. My dad is 91 and living in a nursing home in Millard. I asked him what he would like for dinner the evening before Thanksgiving and he said liver and onions! I checked around and found out that Shirley's Diner has liver and onions. We ordered it to go and took it to him. His eyes lit up and when he tasted it he enjoyed it immensely. He really loved the grilled onions. The portion was huge so we left 1/2 of it so he could enjoy it for lunch the day after Thanksgiving. read more

I didn't really like the eggs Benedict. But the waffles are amazing! Normally I think you get poached eggs on eggs Benedict? These looked like like just fried eggs. The Canadian bacon is really thick, I think I prefer thin. I got hash browns with cheese, those were really good. My husband got chicken and waffles he said that was really good.
