View from Indian Route 13... keep driving!! There's another opportunity in a few miles

I went to the Four Corners and Shiprock was about 45 minutes away. I read up on how to get the best picture without trespassing on Navajo Nation land. Set the GPS to Indian Service Route 13. Once you turn from 491 onto Indian Service Route 13, drive 5-7 miles and you'll see a small driveway on the right. There's an open gate that leads you into a dirt driveway. From what I've read, this is private Navajo Nation property. Sure there's no sign but there is a fence that clearly shows it is not public property. So please don't be THAT person and trespass because you selfishly want an instagram photo. Just take the photo from the gate. My photos were taken with an iPhone 15. No filter but I did zoom.

We viewed from the town of Shiprock. We did not have the time to take the road to the Shiprock Rock Formation, but the views we did see from the town were impressive. We have seen Shiprock from many distant viewpoints, so being near enough for a close up view was great!

I would have easily rated 5 star because this place is huge. More nearer you go more stunning this rock formation looks. It's humangous and provide spectacular views. Only reason I would take away stars is due to lack of information for this attraction. Only way to reach there is through off service roads which are in worst condition. You should only plan to go there if you have trucks or 4X4. Me and my wife went in our mustang and we only know how we survived. After reaching half , we realized that going further is impossible. We gave up and returned back when 4.5 miles was left as per google maps. We didn't see even a single vehicle in that route. So doesn't looks like a visitor friendly place. Local city authorities should have put board with enough information on what how when of this attraction.

    First sight.

Road goes into blue hazy horizon, lined up with hills & clouds... And on the end of it you see a zigzag spike in horizontal lines & layers of infinity. At first, I thought it is a mirage. We exchange puzzled looks and pull to the side of the road. It cannot be. We are way too far from it. Is it? ...Shiprock!... No matter there you are are in NM, you can always spy it - from south or the north, east or west. We got first sight of it driving of Albuquerque, and it never left the horizon as we continue in big arch towards Salt Lake City, and turning south from there... It's a bizarre feeling driving in NM - you can see flat grounds 360 degrees around you, and nothing to obscure your view. You always see Shiprock. As we get closer to it, it grows bigger, and bigger - from zigzag on a horizon to impressive and weirdest rock formation. It almost feels alien. As an alien ship crash-landed in a desert. It is a sacred land to Navajo, so we tip-toe our way to the fence & shoot from there (gawd bless 300mm!). Shiprock is an amazing sight - from afar or up close, in morning haze or in the last sunlight. Must see.

If you are in the area, definitely worth the visit. The rock formation is majestic and will take your breath away. The road to shiprock is not paved but we had no problem going with a sedan. Absolutely worth the detour!

I have no affiliation with it, but we used Firefall Photography's website for excellent resources on all of that, including pinpoints for the north/south parking areas. As experienced hikers (Grand Canyon, Utah parks, Himalayas, etc.), we know our limitations, including the fact that our GPS apps often make quirky jumps in extremely remote areas, so we tried to pick and choose our priorities, ultimately deciding that we could manage the Bisti portion by ourselves. (We did the De-Na-Zin side the following day, with a guide. We had limited time to explore and didn't want to waste it false-navigating to permitted parking sites or major landmarks on our own, especially in monsoon season, so we signed up for the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah tour offered by Navajo Wilderness Adventures for that area -- absolutely wonderful!) On our independent day at Bisti, we arrived around 3 p.m., and a few sprinkles started just after 7 p.m., cutting off our desire to stay into the golden/blue hours, but it's worth visiting no matter the time of day. Since we had only one sunrise moment to spend there, we decided to end at Wings, despite having read that the Eggs don't photograph well in brighter light, and we were pleased with that choice in the end, since we had "near sunset" at the gorgeous hill of wings. Overall, in just under five hours, we made it from the Eggs to the Wings and hit nearly every major formation in between, including the Rock Garden, petrified wood, Hoodoo City, Vanilla Hoodoos, Manta Ray, and more. We found that some of our GPS points didn't quite match the Firefall map (including at the Beige Hoodoos and Manta Ray), but going armed with general AllTrails locations, Firefall and AllTrails maps, Gaia, and a tiny print map with photos made it all come together, allowing us plenty of time to photograph the landscape from vantages up, down, and all around. The relatively flat terrain made our nine miles of hiking relatively simple (but do avoid it after rain where possible), and it was a fantastic journey -- such mesmerizing formations and astounding landscape!

The grounds are quite expansive and dotted with the lodge and cabins. The cabin was very comfortable and clean. They offer many activities including: horseback riding, mountain biking, fly fishing, UTV riding, hiking, skeet shooting, a swimming pool, and more (even a mechanical Bull!). The food was prepared on site and delicious! Beef centric menu but so tasty, and they accommodated a vegetarian in our party easily. I looked forward to the breakfast each night and dinner each morning! The best part of the stay, however, was the staff. They were amazing! They took care of everything, and always with a smile. They do everything at the ranch, and the team here takes the experience to the next level. I highly recommend a trip here to unwind and recharge!
