Got carry out, bc I live down the block. The place is reasonably nice inside, so I was curious why it was almost completely empty on a Saturday night. Then we met the bartender while we waited for our food who said more expletives in 3 seconds than I certainly would have expected. Don't give a rip about swearing, but any restaurant mgmt that allows that has me starting to worry about the food I'm getting. So, the food. Got the shine maki, chicken potstickers, and miso soup for $26. The roll wasn't terrible, but the miso soup didn't taste like...well, miso soup. And the potstickers were absolutely terrible. The texture and taste leads me to believe they were either steamed multiple times and cooled in between or lost in the back of the freezer for a few years. I couldn't finish the potstickers and soup, and I'm not a picky eater. I don't plan to return. read more

I understand that most Japanese restaurants are owned by non-Japanese, and that's okay. But someone should've done a little more research before naming this place. I'm sure it's supposed to say "shine" like the sun is shining. But in Japanese, "shine" (she-ne) means "death" or more specifically, "DIE!!!" My apartment shares a dumpster with Shine. I know that statement leads to the inference that Shine is comparable to a dumpster. But it is not. Shine is nothing like a dumpster. I went to Shine for dinner on a Friday evening; it was still pretty early so there were very few customers. They seated us across the room from the other pair of diners, which I thought was nice. The restaurant is a lot bigger inside than it seems from outside. It's very clean and seems well kept. The service was great; everyone was friendly. They constantly refilled our water glasses, literally after each sip. My only complaint is that there were no less than three servers/waiters/workers standing eerily close to our table throughout the entire meal. I know they were just being attentive, but it was a bit much. We started with a large bottle of Sapporo and my friend ordered a glass of Glennfiddich. It was supposed to be a single shot, but the liquor filled at least half the rocks glass, which was...awesome. I ordered the lobster and spicy tuna rolls -- the lobster roll was very sweet, but it was a good balance to the spicy tuna. Friend got a plate of sesame scallops with broccoli -- I tried a few of the scallops and they tasted pretty good, cooked well. We also got two orders of uni at Friend's insistence (he loves uni). Everything was good. Great for me; good for Friend. All in all, it was a pleasant experience. The best part: the giant amount of scotch. The worst part: employees standing and watching us like hawks. This is one of our favorite places to eat. And hands down our favorite place for sushi in the city. Flaming roll and volcano roll are to die for. The best sushi I have ever had. I took a friend there yesterday and she was super impressed. Don't ever go to this place without getting the calamari - it's special. It's complete with claws, jalapenos and it is also the BEST calamari we have ever had. It makes me angry that they don't get more business at this new location. It makes me worried that I will lose one of the best restaurants I have dined at. I write a monthly restaurant review for Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and I just now decided I will be writing a review for them. They moved, now have outdoor seating, definite plus. Taro fries with aioli- YUM. another plus. (however i have yet to find something with aioli i didn't like). Maki- uhhh... minus. Okay, their fish and ingredients actually aren't bad. But they put SOOOO much rice in each roll. And it is chewy rice. So their rolls are huge, but huge full of chewy rice. I don't like it. It took away from the other flavors in the roll, and made it extremly hard to eat. Plus it made me full sooner on refined carbs, yipee. I had the perfect date night planned: a picnic in Oz Park on a 70-degree, clear, summer night while eating yummy takeout, drinking wine, and watching The Wizard of Oz. I'm happy to say that everything went swimmingly, except for the yummy takeout. I have never had such flavorless sushi in my life. I ordered the Bagel maki, Crazy maki, and Mexican maki. Each one of them was SO BLAND and the rolls fell apart when I picked them up. I thought that maybe Shine just wasn't a good sushi place and was more a noodles-and-rice kind of place. Wrong. My fiance ordered pad thai and it was also very boring. He ate about half of it before throwing it away. (I, on the other hand, never let food go to waste, even if I have to drown it in soy sauce to taste any flavor at all.) The sauce was a weird texture, and he said it tasted almost like it had a tomato base instead of a peanut base. They also gave us only one fortune cookie despite the fact that we clearly ordered for more than one person. The food isn't cheap enough to warrant this level of blah-ness. Step it up, Shine! Throw some salt in there or something! There are too many good Asian places in Lincoln Park for me to go back to Shine. Next time, I'll just follow the Yellow Brick Road, er, Lincoln, up to Noodles in the Pot or Kyoto. read more

Back to Shine, and everything was just as good as I remember it being - service, food, atmosphere. I came here with three others over the weekend for a delish sushi dinner, and we all enjoyed it. We shared a big pot of hot green tea for the table, which was just what we needed after walking around all night in the cold. We ended up getting a refill on that later in the meal too. We started with crab rangoon (awesome.), a "red dragon" roll (spicy tuna + salmon) and a scrumptious maki roll on their specials list - I can't remember the name, but it had tempura shrimp, avocado, cream cheese, other stuff, and was topped with a brown sauce and pecans - that was SO good. We split more sushi and also ordered the chicken rice noodles and the orange chicken + rice to share as entrees. The noodle and rice dishes were large and filled with fresh veggies - really good flavor / texture for both dishes. *The orange chicken had real, fresh orange peels in the sauce - this was such a refreshing change from the orange-flavored mystery gel that coats most 'orange chicken' dishes I've ordered. Decent place. I've been here 3 times and have generally enjoyed myself. The first time was with 3 of my friends when we were scoping out a good asian place to eat at. Service was good but we waited a long time for our food, despite the place not being full. My food was good, so I can't complain there. Though our waiter pulled some BS about not being able to charge certain amounts to certain cards, something about the system not being able to process it (yeah right). The second time was for my birthday, which was nice. Everyone got served in a timely fashion and the food was delicious. Great service and food, if I remember my spicy tuna sushi was especially delectable. The most recent time was with my mom around 5 in the evening. It was really nice and we decided to gorge ourselves. My octopus sushi was fantastic as were our gyoza. The yakisoba was delicious as always. However, my ramen was insanely salty. It was waaaay saltier than the packaged ramen, which sort of sucked. Server was hilarious and gave my mom rubberband chopsticks as a gag because she needed a fork. My only complaint is that the place is too darn dark. It was really difficult to eat when the lighting was that low. The small candles at the table provided little lighting. read more

I was not glowing when I left Shine Morida last night. The good includes our server and the outdoor seating (even though at one point three fire trucks drove by and dished up a healthy serving of Chicago street scum onto our table - not the fault of our hosts). The interior space was nice, as well, although completely empty but for two diners and a handful of bored servers. The trouble started, however, when ordering the drinks. The sparkling sake on the menu was no longer served at the restaurant (they weren't just out of it, they no longer serve it). Not a big deal. My girl Jessie's mixed drink was served about ten minutes after mine, and was a watered-down mess by the time it reached the table. Not a huge deal. Miso soup was good - cloudy with miso paste and just enough seaweed and tofu. Not the best miso, but definitely satisfactory. The food took an inordinate time to make its way to our table, given we only ordered three rolls, and particularly given that only seven other diners were present. When it arrived, the food was underwhelming. The two vegetarian rolls we ordered were almost tasteless. The oshinko did not have the bite I have come to expect, and the kampyo was woody. Now, I recognize that I have criticized others for going to a vegetarian restaurant and ordering the token meat dish. Perhaps ordering veggie sushi is comparable, but as I have had such outstanding veggie sushi at many other establishments, I know it is possible (and probable?) The fatty tuna Jess ordered was "fine". The nail in the proverbial sushi coffin, though, and the reason I will not return and advise others to look down the street to Sai Cafe if in need of sushi, is the soy sauce! When we first poured it into our dishes Jess immediately commented on the color - red and translucent. The taste was almost nonexistent. We received replacement bottles, but containing the same soy imposter. Shine obviously did not follow Kikkoman's admonition to only refill bottles with the same. Our server was kind in bringing us several packages of take-out soy sauce, but the damage had been done. My question to you, Shine, is - why would a moderately priced sushi restaurant (read: not a cheap hole-in-the-wall) skimp on the soy sauce? When I expressed my dislike, Jess mentioned that she thought she had read another complaint specifically deriding the soy sauce. And now there are two. read more

Oh Asian fusion.... you always seem to create a whole bunch of average instead of something truly delicious. Miso soup is sub par. Flavor is a bit weak, and there was literally an overwhelming amount of seaweed in it the last time I had it. However, sizzling rice soup is the only really, really amazingly good thing I've had here. I would def go here just for the sizzling rice soup. To reiterate the above comment.... the sushi here is "ok" and the Chinese entrees are "ok". I'd argue that they have better sushi than many other fusion-type places (as opposed to a sushi only restaurant).... but that's basically the equivalent of saying "well this doesn't suck but it's not good either". They have all your "standard" American-Chinese entrees here (kung pao, general tso, orange, broccoli, etc)..... everything I've had has been decent. Maybe it's just a challenge to make amazing chicken and broccoli. I'd highly recommend this place to a group with 1 or more sushi-averse people. The menu here is huge and everyone can be happy. Sushi lovers can go crazy and the fish fraidy-cats can get themselves some good old general tso's chicken and everyone is all smiles. Quick carry-out service and nice dine in atmosphere. Gonna give this place the benefit of the doubt for right now. It's always funny when the cheapest roll is the best...The Spicy Maki Roll was delicious. I'm not sure that I've ever had tomato in a sushi roll, but Shine succeeded here. I also used the 10% off yelp deal which was sweet! Unfortunately, after the first 3 rolls disappeared, we wanted one more. My girlfriend was hungry after a disappointing "grilled" chicken sandwich for lunch in De Pere, WI (it was fried and late but we got a $6 coupon that will never ever be used), so I let her choose. She selected the Rainbow roll which tends to be a safe bet. However, this roll had cooked salmon or tuna inside the roll. The huge slices of fish on top made up for it I guess...either way, if you like your sushi raw, then avoid the Rainbow roll. Otherwise, we sat outside which is always a bonus in the summertime even though Chicago is hot as blazes right now. The house salad with ginger dressing was very solid as well. It's winter. I just recently moved here from Florida. Once a week I try to eat at a new place. So that I do not hibernate and subsist off of Trader Joe's frozen oatmeal, or become a total hermit. Tonight I parked o'er by Armitage & Sheffield and walked until my Florida blood wore thin. Obviously, I didn't walk too far before I hit Shine. Pros: Atmosphere is lovely. Music is not too loud. Cucumber water (!) Hot towels Wine list Right off the brown line Fantastic Peanut Sauce Wonderful & Attentive wait staff Clean Bathroom I am trying to find good things. I really wanted to like it. Cons: Cold edamame Mediocre Summer Rolls (too much lettuce for my tastes) Our dishes were from the Chinese portion of the menu and they were only okay. The Neptune's delight was bland & the shrimp were NOT deveined. (Is that bitchy?). The sesame scallops dish was very flavorful, but came in a tiny portion and left my dining companion hungry for more. Did he want to chance ordering another overpriced mediocre dish? We decided to switch to sushi. He got the Bagel Maki. I was hoping that the sushi would save this place. It was so pretty, you see. The sushi was just *ok* I don't know. It was in a word: fabulous. I went last night, on a Sunday, my least favorite day of the week to find myself....happy, full, occupied. Three things that normally do not fit into any personal category on that dreadful day. We ordered a few rolls- hmm... the hirame (very good), rock n roll (very good), flaming maki (mouth-watering), mango roll (pleasantly different). There were a few others but I cannot remember. Needless to say, I take back the 'eh' from my last review. This place is definitely worth checking out and if I lived in LP, I would be a regular. I am a crab rangoon (well cream cheese) and salmon enthusiast and this place rocks the best of my both worlds, plus our server was great! The place had a nice vibe and as my friend best put it "romantic", oh and they played Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" (nice!!!). I had the Morida's Spicy Maki (salmon, avocado, cilantro & tomato in spicy sauce) and two rolls from the one page menu (I guess it's their temporary special rolls), one of then was called the Mango-something and had mango on top and salmon on the inside - this was an amaziiiiing roll!!!! I also had a roll that came with a flame in the middle of the plate (the waiter told us NOT to dip the sushi in the flame since it was actually Bacardi 151 lit up, haha). It was a salmon roll with avocado and other stuff and lots-o-spicy mayo on top - yuuuummmmy. I will be coming here more often, fo' sho! :) Oh and the crab rangoon was awesome too!! read more

We came here on Saturday night with a reservation for 5 and were seated right away. The service was great and the food quality was also excellent. The rolls were very decent sized and filled us up! We ordered 6 rolls and some soup, and it was about $23 each with tax and a 20% tip. It seems every time I go out for sushi I end up spending at least $30, so the fact that it was a mere $23 made me incredibly happy! The only downfall was that it took forever to find parking, and due to the fact that that's not really the restaurants fault, I can't blame them for that! We'll be back, for sure! read more

Since sushi is on the Yelp Brain today, I figured I would add another favorite. Ate here for an afternoon snack to refuel after shopping this past Saturday. I have eaten here quite a bit and the sushi is really good, I couldn't believe I hadn't yelped it! The honey roll is one of my favorites...something I would have never thought to order. They have a ton of really good special maki and their regular maki is melt-in-your-mouth delicious. And definitely have the hamachi carpaccio appetizer...so good, with the ceviche sauce. It is tasty. The only problem I have with this place is that it can get cold in the west side of the building when it is cold outside. One time I was there and they had space heaters out! This is also a great place to go with people that do not care for sushi because they have an extensive menu with Chinese and Thai food options that are just as delicious as the sushi. I hate it when you go to a fusion place and one is better than the other...one person always has to compromise. Not at Shine. Everyone leaves full and satisfied. If I am going for simply sushi, I might hit up Sai Cafe over Shine, but if I want to have options for my non-sushi friends (and husband) this one works well. Definitely one of my favorites. Both excellent. My friend had the fried rice with shrimp and she enjoyed it. The new location has the same general feel of the old location, although it is a bit darker and doesn't appear to have outside seating. The outside seating at the old location was always great during the summer. My friend and I were shoved behind a wall in a kind of awkward location. It was in the way back room where the sushi is being made. They should change the set-up of the room and offer seating at the sushi bar. The service was good. Corkage fee was only $5. read more

This place used to be decent. Now it's remarkably subpar. The goods: outdoor seating. Fresh spring rolls. Seaweed salad. The bads: service. Cashew broccoli-- take frozen broccoli, unfreeze part way, overcook, throw cashews ontop. But the service really took the "awful" cake. Our server forgot our calamari. Instead of apologizing she waffled between being defensive and remarkably bored. We never got our calamari. When our cashew broccoli arrived as just broccoli, we remarked that typically the dish involves cashews as well. She stared at us blankly, took the plate away and dumped a few nuts on top. Great, thanks. The manager came over and comped the awful dish and another round of drinks. But overall it was remarkably unimpressive. read more

Pretty typical multi Asian Restuarant. From what I recall, they had elements of Japanese, Chinese, and Thai dishes. Their maki selection is rather large and have a unique number of rolls I recommend trying the Taro Fries as an appetizer. It comes with a subtle Green Curray Aioli which is sweet and spicy. So good that we got an extra side of the Aioli. I had the Tom Yum soup with Shrimp which had the right amount of spice. I'm definitely going back to try their other specialties. read more

I enjoyed my dinner here the other night. We started out with the chicken pot stickers for an app and they were HUGE and they gave us 6. I like getting an even number because it is so much easier to share and then I don't have to cut one in half. I ordered the Sesame Roast with scallops which came with broccoli. The broccoli was fresh and the scallops were plenty and bigger than I expected. I like the crunchy coating on the scallops, it was something I have never had before and really enjoyed. My fried ordered the honey roll and the spider roll. I love soft shell crab and it was really good. The spicy mayo wasn't too spicy and had just the right amount of heat. The honey roll was interesting, you can really taste the honey but the tempura around the outside of the roll made an interesting texture. Our service was really fast and we barely had to wait for our drinks, app or food. My fortune cookie read 'develop your critical edge' so I am going to take this too heart as I continue my yelping! One night, a fairly wise man was thinking "Do I want Thai tonight? Chinese? Or sushi?" His very wise wife came along and said, "Why can't you have everything?" They put their heads together and created SHINE. The Thai-Sushi-Chinese restaurant. If it's Asian inspired, they have it. I went there on Sunday. It's a decent looking joint with nice enough staff. We ordered a bit of everything. My favorite was the Honey Roll and the Flaming Roll. My least favorite was the green curry (too gooey, not enough veggie variety). Overall, not my favorite. But conducive for groups with dissenting opinions on what region of Asian food they want. read more

This is/was a sister restaurant to the very delicious Republic restaurant that was downtown prior to its demise. We were very sad to see Republic go as it was our every Friday evening spot. Before Republic went away their staff told us about Shine, but we had some how forgotten about it. We rediscovered Shine this past weekend while looking through Yelp for some good Chinese takeout. Wow...are we glad we did!!! They have the same sesame chicken that I used to eat at Republic except they call it Sesame roast (or something similar) and it is sooooooo good!!! We also tried a couple of appetizers and everything was yummy. We will definitely not be forgetting about Shine again and will definitely be ordering takeout from here again!!! read more

I dig it! Cool, swanky vibe and not so pretentious for the Lincoln Park/Armitage scene. We came here on a Saturday and the wait wasn't too bad, we posted up at the bar and grabbed a drink. They have some cool cocktails and good wine/beer selection. We shared a few salmon/tuna/crab rolls and all were fresh and yummy. Prices are pretty descent for the quality. I also started with a house salad and thought the ginger dressing was different than usual, probably not my favorite, but not a huge deal. My only other rant is that the 10% off your bill for Yelp Check In is only Sunday-Thursday. I wish it was good for the whole week but oh well. read more

The sushi is very good and not too pricey. The real selling point of this establishment is my favorite dish, sesame beef. I've never been a huge fan of sesame [insert meat of choice]. However, Shine has turned me around. Also, for those who like to take home leftovers, Shine's food has excellent reheat value. If you so choose to visit the restaurant I suggest going during lunch. I say this because this place can get extremely loud at night. If you come for dinner try to avoid sitting in the middle area. That's my first complaint. My boyfriend was in town and we wanted some quick sushi. Shine had some decent reviews and it was only a block from my apartment. We ordered for pick up and were able to use the online coupon since we could not edit a roll from the website. Good customer service off the bat. The place is really nice inside, didn't quite expect that. Again, the employees were really nice. The flaming maki roll was delicious! Highly recommend! The Maki here is excellent. I highly recommend the Shiitake Maki - very simple and understated but it's one of the few sweet Makis I like. Unfortunately, I was unimpressed with the Rainbow and Satsumi Maki we ordered - it wasn't bad by any means, just not that great. Nice wine list with many unique choices (although my friend was sad that they didn't carry plum wine). Might not want to wear anything white while there though - our waiter accidentally knocked over our bottle of wine. No big deal, it happens (and luckily my coat and bag are solid black!) but he then related to us how another waiter accidentally spilled a bottle of red wine all over another customer's baby! (So, don't bring babies here either....). Personally, I prefer the sister restaurant (Rise) but, as the Southport Brown Line station is currently closed, Shine is much easier to get to. read more

As a Wisconsin gal who grew up on meat and potatoes, I didn't start to enjoy the fantastic-ness that is sushi until I went to college. Now that I've been in Chicago for three years, I've gone to my fair share of sushi places and have to say that Shine is my hands-down favorite. The rolls, both specialty and regular, are always fresh and consistent. One of my favorite things about Shine is that whenever I order takeout, it is ready within 20 minutes (as opposed to local competitor Toro sushi on Clark, that often has a pickup wait time of more than an hour... lame). Favorite rolls: Fashion maki, spicy scallop and honey. Great bar, too, (complete with cute bartender) when you dine-in and have to wait for a table. Bonus. read more

I'm always a sushi lover and I'm an even greater lover of pan-asian restaurants. How great is it to get Japanese, Thai, and Chinese all in one place! Really great. I went a few weeks back with my boyfriend and had an exceptionally lovely time. The place is BYOB but according to our waiter, they are trying to transition away from that luxury, hence a $15 corking fee. Lucky for us (and thanks to our adoration for cheap wine) our corking fee was waived because, technically, it was a twist off. score. We ordered: the pan fried dumplings, which were HUGE, and so so good; the sesame chicken, which was crunchy and sweet with broccoli steamed to perfection (not too soggy!); the spicy octopus maki, which was too tough and generally tasteless but was a first time try for both of us, so I can't say for sure if that's because of the fish or because of the chef; and the flaming maki, which was way too good - the fish is salmon and it's rolled in avocado and spicy mayo then toasted warm (I love it when rolls are warm, it's such a nice change). The best part of the flaming maki was the presentation.... there was a little bowl of fire (bacardi 151) and each piece was circled around it like little people keeping warm around a campfire. Neat! As a side note, I was briefly tempted to test the bowl of 151 (as in, get the party started early!) but I assumed it would be tacky so I refrained. The ambiance was great too, all dark woods with red and orange accents. Perfect for a date night. My only thought was that it was a tad dark. I mean, I'm all about getting cozy in mood-lit restaurants but what if I was here with a girlfriend? Our service was just great (did I mention our "corking" fee was waived?!?!) - he was attentive but not overbearing and really understood the importance of spreading the dishes over time. I love when restaurants get this right and he seriously timed it to perfection. He was also very knowledgeable about the menu, we got the flaming maki on his recc. The price point was a teensy bit high but the food was delicious and fresh, the service excellent, and the evening lovely so I won't hold it against them too much. Came here on a weeknight for a first date. Great choice for a date, and the atmosphere and service were great. The date was well sub-par, but the food was delicious. Have since come back on several occasions, one of which was a good friend's birthday party. They gave us our own private room to accommodate our large group which was great! They have a really fun martini list and a decently priced wine list. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the ginza roll. In fact, I crave it. The combination of lobster tail, cucumber, spicy mayo, and tobiko is pretty much heavenly. There is tons of tobiko on top and I don't know what it is about the texture of tobiko, but I just love it. Other favorite rolls include the mexican roll and rainbow roll, and all of the sashimi is really fresh. I'm also a huge fan of the house salad, the ginger dressing on it is very refreshing. WIN. Sexy and trendy enough to take a date, but also fancy enough to take your parents or Grandma. Treat your honey to a honey roll; it was our favorite. Everything tasted very fresh and was flavorful. I haven't been to every sushi joint in the city, but not many of them have unique rolls or such a variety like this one. I can also appreciate the fact that they have full list of special rolls and plates that change constantly, so try at least one of those. The fact that this restaurant has sizzling rice soup seals the deal for me. Not many places have it on the menu and it's comfort food I grew up with. Bad service, rude manger/owner. Food not fresh very dirty. And it's Over priced. Will not go back.
