I ran into a former colleague at Sherby, and he characterized this annual street party perfectly: "It's like you're back in college, but in a good way."
Sherby takes over a section of Sherwood Avenue in the Highlands on Derby Eve night. This year's was my first, and I don't think it will be my last.
I was immediately put at ease when I first arrived. We brought my pup along and were a bit worried she wouldn't be allowed in (like at other not-so-dog-friendly events).
But the lady collecting the $5 admission (which goes to charity) remarked how cute our dog was and ushered us in. Things were off to a good start.
We found a bourbon barrel that was serving as a high-top table to stick around and got food to eat from the food trucks and beer from stands. Bulleit was also on hand with swag.
So with food and beer, we settled in to listen to the great music. A band was set up on the porch of one of the homes.
And like I said at the top, this had a college street party vibe, like you would see in a movie about college. But unlike my time at UK, this party was couch-burning-free.
It was neat to see the neighbors on this street get into it. And all in all, Sherby provided a fun release for Derby time.
Yeah, fancy parties have their allure but there's something to be said about attending a casual, neighborhood celebration too. read more
