Winkbar is just a small little kiosk in Westfield Chermside, and they offer threading, eyelash/eyebrow tinting, eyelash extensions and perming, as well as massage. I hadn't made an appointment, but they were able to squeeze me in 20 minutes for an Eyebrow Threading ($28), so I did a bit of browsing at Kitten D'Amour (which is right near by) and then came back. They sit you down in a reclining chair and wipe rubbing alcohol and cleanser over the area. You're asked to close your eye and pull your eyelid tight and they work on your eyebrows. It's not very painful, a little more than tweezers, but not as bad as waxing. It only took a few minutes per eyebrow, and the woman did a great job shaping my eyebrows. When she was done, she gave me a short massage around my eyes and then we were done. All up it took less than 10 minutes. She said people usually come back between 2-4 weeks, and they have a rewards card - after 5 threading sessions, you get your 6th visit free! I'll definitely be back and maybe will get a massage next time too. Winkbar offers full body massage ($60), head/neck/shoulder ($50), indian head massage ($45), ayurvedic eye relief ($30) and hand massage ($20).

I have only had my eyebrows threaded, tinted, and lip threaded here. The threading cost cost $28 dollars though places in the Valley, City and Kelvin Grove do a identical job for around $12. The tinting cost $18 and made virtually no difference, perhaps half a shade darker. Actually it did kinda make a difference, it made me look like I had a mono-brow. The upper lip cost $16. The only differences are that it is located in a large shopping centre - so great for the air-con, no hills to walk (e.g. city), easy parking, a large variety of shops and they give a little longer massage. I suppose if it was a special occasion you might want to splurge, but if you have thick, quickly growing back brows like me then its too expensive to go often. 4 stars because of the price.

I've had my fair share of waxers so I think I've earned the right to out King's Beauty as the exemplary waxers they are. King's Beauty is renowned (to me anyway) for its precision and swift delivery of pain. I'd rather have my painful wax over and done with in 15 minutes than drawn out slowly over half an hour like some other waxes I've experienced. But with King's, you're in and out and happy as Larry. My last appointment, I was in and out in ten minutes - TEN MINUTES PEOPLE! Plus, when I elect to undergo services of a more embarrassing nature, I generally don't feel embarrassed at King's. It's a very pleasant place to walk in to with an array of magazines typical to a beauty place. Even when I've had to cancel and reschedule, the girls at King's have been very helpful and always managed to work something out. They return answering machine messages and can squeeze you in at a moment's notice (which someone like me really appreciates). Their prices are great for a struggling pauper of a student like myself and a real steal for the quality of work. And on Monday's it's a free-for-all with 10% off all beauty services. It's on the cusp of busy Bardon and Paddington but they have a sneaky car park around the back for customers. If it were possible to give King's Beauty three thumbs up, I would.

Over time she has selected and trained a team of hairdressers who are highly skilled and have great people skills. These girls and guys know their tools of trade, know their colours, and most importantly know their customers. I went in on Saturday (they squeezed me in a short notice) just to have a tidy up of neck and around my ears before Xmas and my holiday. The tidy-up was done quickly, expertly and happily. God, I love this place - and for this they charged me very very little. In saying this, an actual package of services eg cut and colour is your usual cost of over $100 so don't think that my small cost for a tidy up indicates this place is "cheap as chips". It's not, but you get what you pay for. A very professional cut and colour. A big thumbs up to Lizzie who has been a hard-working, dedicated salon owner who has done all of this with 2 small children. I really admire her work and what she has created. Kudos to my current hairdresser there, Simone, who is a cool chick and really knows how to cut hair.

I'd never tried it, and I can tell you waxing your eyebrows doesn't even come close. Apparently when you wax you still often leave the root of the hair in the skin so the regrowth is quicker. Threading is also heaps more precise than waxing, I've never had eyebrows like this. They also do the full range of beauty treatments at very reasonable prices (including super cheap waxing), and Rani is amazing at fitting you in for last minute appointments. I don't think I'll ever go to another salon when I've got Kelvin Grove Hair and Beauty.

Rani is friendly, and has become a really good friend over the years I've been coming to her for waxing. I can trust her, and that's not really something you always find at a beauty salon. She's always more than willing to reshuffle her schedule to fit in an emergency appointment, and even when she's really busy she manages to me through in perfect time.
